Classic Ethernet Modules

4-port Gigabit Ethernet and 12-port 10/100 TX SmartEdge® Classic Ethernet modules provide service providers with a cost-effective and flexible range of carrier-class Ethernetbased connectivity choices that enable the construction of efficient and highly-scalable next generation Smart Broadband Networks. Leveraging the flexible modular design approach of the SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Router, Classic Ethernet Modules are supported in any SmartEdge chassis and are compatible with any generation module and route processor for complete transgenerational interoperability. Service providers can mix modules in the same chassis to achieve a highly-flexible and cost-effective configuration enabling tailored service delivery.

HIGHLIGHTS • Port-based Traffic Management and Services with subscriber-based QoS, scheduling, policing and granular ratelimiting • Wire-speed, high-performance MPLS Provider and Provider Edge functionality • High-capacity, efficient multicast replication for high-performance, large scale IP Video deployments • Distributed processing with no singlepoint-of-failure and local, wire-speed IP services and forwarding including RIP, OSPF, BGP4 and IS-IS • On-demand reconfiguration and inservice ASIC microcode updates • Trans-generational interoperability for maximum investment preservation • Hot swappable for in-service removal and insertion • Gigabit Ethernet Modules leverage industry-standard GBIC-based optics for maximum deployment flexibility with optical distances of up to 70 km and support for copper 1000Base-T interfaces

PRODUCT OVERVIEW SmartEdge Classic Ethernet modules are IEEE 802.3 standards-based and deliver the full range of SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Router functionality required for converged and triple-play network deployments. Targeted for applications that do not require per-subscriber traffic management capabilities, these high-performance modules offer advanced Layer 3 forwarding and port-based IP services such as Advanced Quality of Service (QoS), Multiprotocol Label Switching/Virtual Private Networks (MPLS/VPN) and Virtual LAN (VLAN) capabilities. Consequently, these interface modules are ideal for broadband aggregation uplinks, inter/intra-POP and Ethernet uplink/aggregation deployments that require sophisticated port-level broadband services. Based upon a common foundation of carrier-class services and capabilities, SmartEdge Classic Ethernet modules are available with several different physical interface and density choices. The 12-port 10/100 TX module is an auto-sensing, copper-based module that supports both 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps connections at wire-speed and offers standard RJ-45-based cable connections. The 4-port Classic Gigabit Ethernet module is available in a standard version or an enhanced version. The Enhanced version of the Classic Gigabit Interface Module offers increased memory to support a higher number of simultaneous services when higher per-port queuing capacities are required. Both versions of the Gigabit Ethernet Module use standards-based Gigabit Interface Converters (GBICs) for deployment flexibility and including support for copper-based GBICs.

ADVANCED SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS All forwarding and sophisticated IP packet processing is performed locally, in hardware on each module. Full-featured, carrier-class forwarding with advanced port-based IP services, such as Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities for per-hop and aggregate QoS applications with QoS propagation and rewrite are supported. Additionally, flexible queue management with up to 1024 queues is provided along with granular rate limiting and policing capabilities. Other advanced services include authentication of inner and outer VLANs with accounting and statistics, and support for subscriber-level PPPoE and L2TP management. In addition, these modules provide robust support for MPLS Martini-draft Private Wire services. Meeting critical requirements for non-stop operation, SmartEdge interface modules are hot-swappable and highly resilient with full state and session maintenance capabilities. Each interface module also supports ASIC-level microcode updates and in-service, per-subscriber level reconfigurations without requiring system restarts or impacting active sessions.
