Smart board: The SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard that allows you project your presentation, write over the projection, save the changes, and create new presentations. You can show videos, DVDs and link to the internet. It is an easy tool to use requiring no special expertise. Another definition from encyclopedia: The SMART Board interactive whiteboard is a product of SMART Technologies and SMART Board software allows users to write over any computer application, add and edit notes, and save everything in a single file. Software applications such as SMART Recorder enables users to save audio and data for playback as a synchronized file; SMART Video Player enables users to write over moving or still video. SMART Ideas concept-mapping software helps students brainstorm, think visually, and turn complex ideas into concept maps; a free copy is available for use with SMART whiteboards. Objectives of using smart board in distance education: 1. Enhance instruction and learning in distance education. 2. Make the communication more interactive between tutor and learners
(Two way communications.). 3. Create a stimulating and engaging learning distance environment. 4. Helps organize presentations and motivate learners. 5. Make the learning easy to the face-to-face communication student, distance education and EL students. Feature:
There are many features in smart board technology such as: • It is large. • The projector throws the computer’s desktop image onto the interactive whiteboard, which acts as both a monitor and an input device.
• • • • • • • • •
Control the presentation from the screen by touching the screen. Capture an image of any annotations you make to a PowerPoint (or other applications) presentation. Annotate over moving or still video sources such as those from VCRs or DVDs. Save or print a complete copy of everything written, drawn, or typed in the Notebook software. Use the handwriting recognition feature to convert handwritten text into typewritten text. USB Cable to connect the smart board to the computer. Users can write on the interactive whiteboard in digital ink or use a finger to control computer applications by pointing, clicking and dragging, just as with a desktop mouse. Buttons launch a popup keyboard and a right-mouse-click menu for more input options. The interactive whiteboard is usually mounted on a wall or a floor stand and is used in face-to-face or virtual settings in education, business and government.
Advantage: There are a lot of benefits of using smart board: 1. You can use different program through smart board like PowerPoint and Photoshop. 2. Easy to use. 3. We can connect it with online video conferences. 4. Two way communications. 5. Very interactive: learner can participate through remote or through discussion board. 6. Easy to connect with computers. 7. Need small space of the class. 8. Make a lot of job like: white board, computer screen, touch screen, 9. Wide variety of media types: PowerPoint, web pages, video, etc.... 10. Provide notes to students when class is finished. 11. Students' responses to the Board 12. Preference of whiteboard to alternative presentation methods. 13. The interactive electronic whiteboard is great for demonstrations.... 14. The interactive electronic whiteboard is a colorful tool. Research indicates that students respond to displays where color is employed... 15. The board can accommodate different learning styles... 16. All ages of students respond favorably to board use... 17. Distance learning is an excellent setting for interactive whiteboard use... 18. The interactive whiteboard is an excellent tool for the constructivist educator...
19. Students with limited motor skills can enjoy board use... 20. It is a kid magnet! ... 21. It makes the subject come alive 22. It captures the attention of learners 23. It encourages the involvement of learners in the subject 24. It enables tutors to use multimedia resources and the internet with a whole class. Limitations of the whiteboard: There are some disadvantages on using smart board: We find that it is not useful to use the whiteboard pens for writing because It took longer to display some information on the whiteboard than it would have on an ordinary board. 1. It is difficult to setting up a whiteboard and projector in a small classroom. 2. The fact that the SMART board isn’t multi-touch is a real disadvantage.
3. My only other gripe was the fact that it’s not ‘easy’ to touch. It works best if you use your nail- the back of your hand, to draw with. But a lot of kids, and adults, don’t like to press to hard because they’re afraid that they might wreck it. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Expensive Irrelevant information can distract students from learning. Limited visual area. Alignment issues if it gets moved or drifts over time.
Uses of smart board: Smart board is a good technique because we can use it in different applications such as: Searching the Internet Integrate with on-line video conferencing Presentation Screen “Notebook” Software Discipline Examples: Language Arts Reading Writing Spelling Grammar Math Music/Art Science
Social Studies

Integrating smart board with on line video conferencing: You can integrate a SMART Board interactive whiteboard and a videoconferencing system, your SMART Board interactive whiteboard and projector can act as your display device. With the SMART Board interactive whiteboard, you don't need an additional monitor to display your videoconference. You can use the SMART Board interactive whiteboard in a combined video and data conference by splitting the screen into video and application images. Just like picture-in-picture television, your video image sits in a window alongside your data. You can brainstorm and diagram as if you were at a whiteboard and control all your computer applications directly from the board's touch-sensitive surface, while dedicating a portion of the board to displaying the video of your remote team members. Ways to use Interactive Whiteboards in the online distance education: There a lot of ways that can be use by smart board to deliver and support learning: • • •
It can be used with online video conferencing. Save lessons on webs to present to students who were absent. Create video files to teach a software application, a lesson, or as a review to be posted to the server or web. Example- How to create a graph in Excel or hoe to burn a projects to cds

They provide electronically the entire familiar features of a traditional classroom blackboard or roller whiteboard. Whereas the number of pupils that can practicably be accommodated around a standard computer set-up is limited, whole classes may comfortably participate in whiteboard presentations. Lessons can be enhanced by easily integrating video, animation, graphics, text and audio with the teacher's spoken presentation. It is possible to highlight and annotate key points, using the marker pens. Anything on the screen can be saved as a 'snapshot', making it easy to review and summaries key teaching points. Material can be displayed from a number of sources, including CD-ROMs, websites, DVDs, VHS tapes or television.
Concerns on using smart board: some companies that produces traditional white board, monitors, screens and LCDs for educational purposes (traditional and distance education) are worried about the popularity and fast spread of interactive white board, which might reduce some big institutions need of using their products therefore not buy them and only use interactive white boards. Because of its high cost, not everybody can buy it. Example of using smart board: Example 1: • SMART goes gold with eLearning Africa sponsorship "SMART is committed to supporting the creation of an ICT infrastructure that provides learners equitable access to high-quality education and training across Africa," "SMART products have been available in Africa for over 10 years and are being used to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century.” Example 2: SMART’s Bridgit software facilitates Distance education By Heather Ellwood As Armstrong (Armstrong, an instructional Technology coach with Auburn City School District in Auburn, Alabama. ) well knows, SMART’s Bridgit™ conferencing software, coupled with SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards, can link classrooms across the hall, across the state, on the other side of the country, or indeed, the globe. Such is the case at the Auburn Early Education Center, where in Auburn have the tools necessary to collaborate on a long-distance literacy mentoring project with seniors in Sage Hill School in Newport Coast, California. The school want there students to be able to make connections to the world outside of Alabama, and using Bridgit for distance education projects gives our children that much more of an advantage
