From the cellar of New England collectors, removed from climatecontrolled storage by Skinner staff. A Fourth Growth, Beychevelle is a particularly attractive estate admired for its supple style. -PhM 1. Chateau Beychevelle 1986 St. Julien, 4eme Cru Classe 11 bottles (owc) $600-900 2. Chateau Beychevelle 1989 St. Julien, 4eme Cru Classe 12 bottles (owc) $700-1,000 3. Chateau Canon La Gaffelierre, 1990 St. Emilion 12 bottles (owc) $700-1,000 4. Chateau Lynch Bages 1986 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe u. all bottom neck 12 bottles (owc) $900-1,400 5. Chateau Lynch Bages 1988 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “One of the big surprises is how delicious this wine has turned out. It is a beautiful, classic claret. Dark ruby-colored with purple hues, it reveals aromas of dried herbs, smoke, leather, grilled meats, and copious black cherry and currant fruit. Mediumbodied, powerful, rich, and surprisingly evolved, this vintage has hit its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for another 1012 years.” R. Parker, 92 pts. 06/00 12 bottles (owc) $900-1,400 6. Chateau Montrose 1986 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe u. five very top shoulder, three bottom neck, two top shoulder, some with label staining 10 bottles $650-950

7. Chateau Montrose 1990 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “In several tastings last year, the 1990 Montrose clearly revealed its incredible complexity and massive character. I was especially pleased when, at a large lecture I gave in London at the end of March, the 1990 Montrose, in very tough company (Cheval Blanc 1989 and 1990, Pichon-Lalande 1989 and 1990, Certan de May 1989 and 1990), proved the over-whelming choice of a crowd of nearly 400 British tasters. The wine is remarkably rich, with a distinctive nose of sweet, jammy fruit, liquefied minerals, new saddle leather, and grilled steak. In the mouth, the enormous concentration, extract, high glycerin, and sweet tannin slide across the palate with considerable ease. It is a huge, corpulent, awesomely-endowed wine that is still relatively approachable, as it has not yet begun to shut down and lose its baby fat. It thoroughly embarrassed the 1989, itself an exceptional wine. The 1990 needs 10 more years of cellaring; it should last for 25-30, possibly 40-50 years.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 02/97 5 bottles $1,400-2,000 8. Chateau Pichon Longueville, Lalande 1990 Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe 6 bottles $700-1,000 9. 49. Vega Sicilia Unico 1966 Valbuena 1974 Spain u. both very top shoulder, some capsule corrosion “The most Burgundian (that’s great Burgundy, by the way) wine of the tasting, the 1966 Unico Reserva exhibits a huge, fragrant, penetrating bouquet of sweet, jammy, black-cherry fruit, cedar, smoke, and earth. The saturated, dark ruby color reveals a hint of amber at the edge. Full-bodied, succulent, and velvety, this gorgeously-proportioned, decadently-styled Vega Sicilia is fully mature, yet its balance, freshness, and thrilling level of flavor extraction suggest it should easily glide through 15-20 more years. If readers have the financial means to drink one fully mature vintage of Vega Sicilia’s Unico Riserva, it should be the 1966 or 1953.” R. Parker, 95 pts. 02/95 2 bottles $400-600 An array of the finest Bordeaux purchased as futures (with a case of DRC for good measure) from a Massachusetts Collector, removed from professional climate controlled storage by Skinner staff. Cheval Blanc doesn’t scream out for attention, rather it is passionately pursued by a knowing few. Unquestionably worthy of “First Growth” stature. In keeping with the Right Bank scene, the beautiful park-like setting feels surprisingly casual. Formal to a point, but not overly so. Cheval Blanc is comprised of cabernet franc and merlot. The vinous equivalent of grace and good taste. -PhM 50. Chateau Cheval Blanc 2000 St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe (A) “This closed, backward blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc boasts a saturated purple color along with a reticent but striking bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, truffles, and mocha. In spite of its tightness, aeration reveals scents of licorice, menthol, and saddle leather. Opulent and full-bodied, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a 60-second finish, it is unquestionably as profound as the 1990 and 1982. I still believe the 2000 has the potential to be the most compelling Cheval Blanc since the mythical 1947 and 1949, but patience is required. It should merit a three digit score in 7-10 years, but it is closed at present. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/03 4 bottles $2,300-3,400 51. Chateau Haut Brion 1996 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe 12 bottles (owc) $2,500-3,500 52. Chateau Haut Brion 1998 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe 12 bottles (owc) $2,750-4,250

54. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1995 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 12 bottles (owc) $3,500-5,500

59. Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 2000 Talence, Cru Classe “A superstar of this great vintage, the 2000 La Mission HautBrion is as profound as the 1989, 1982, and 1975. It is more structured and tannic than the 1989, more civilized and refined, but not as thick as the 1982, and sweeter as well as purer than the 1975. The 2000 is neither flamboyant nor accessible, but what upside potential it possesses! In time, one might have to return to the prodigious duo of 1959 and 1961 to find a La Mission with this much potential. While still tight from bottling, its inky purple color is accompanied by extravagantly sweet aromas of blackberries, blueberries, toast, scorched earth, coffee, asphalt, graphite, and smoke. Super-intense and unctuouslytextured, with a sumptuous mid-palate and finish, this is an explosively rich, layered effort that possesses everything I could ever want from a terroir that has given me as much hedonistic and intellectual pleasure as any other wine in the world. It is an amazing achievement for administrator Jean-Bernard Delmas, his son, Jean-Phillipe, and the entire winemaking team. The phenomenal aftertaste goes on for over a minute. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2045.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/03 12 bottles (owc) $4,500-6,500

55. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate’s greatest wine. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grand enough to be put into the final blend, which is atypically high in Cabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It should unquestionably last for 40-50 years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050. The wine of the vintage?” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/99 6 magnums (owc) $5,500-8,000 56. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 6 magnums (owc) R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/99 $6,500-9,500 57. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2002 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 4 bottles $700-1,100

60. Chateau Latour 1995 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 12 bottles (owc) $3,000-5,000 61. Chateau Latour 1996 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “A spectacular Latour, the 1996 may be the modern day clone of the 1966, only riper. This vintage, which is so variable in Pomerol, St.-Emilion, and Graves, was fabulous for the late-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon of the northern Medoc because of splendid weather in late September and early October. An opaque purple color is followed by phenomenally sweet, pure aromas of cassis infused with subtle minerals. This massive offering possesses unreal levels of extract, full body, intensely ripe, but abundant tannin, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. Classic and dense, it displays the potential for 50-75 years of longevity. Although still an infant, it would be educational to taste a bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050.” R. Parker, 99 pts. 06/00 6 magnums (owc) $5,500-8,500

62. Chateau Latour 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “There are only 14,000 cases (only 48% of the crop made it into the grand vin) of the 2000, which flirts with perfection. Truly great stuff, it reveals perfect equilibrium, great finesse, yet colossal size, with a thickness and density that rival the brilliant 1996. This saturated black ruby/purple colored wine seems almost discreet on first inspection, but with aeration, notes of vanilla, exceptionally pure, mineral-infused crème de cassis, and earth emerge. Full-bodied and tannic, it should come close to representing perfection. Latour’s 2000 is hard to compare with previous vintages. It obviously does not have the opulence of the 1990 and 1982, yet there is an extraordinary purity, delineation, seamlessness, and freshness to this wine that sets it apart from previous vintages. In any event, it is prodigious, with at least five decades of evolution ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 20052050.” R. Parker, 98 pts. 04/03 12 bottles (owc) $8,000-12,000 63. Chateau Margaux 2003 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe “Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine of extraordinary complexity and intensity, it reveals a deep purple color, a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux (possibly even more concentrated), a velvety texture, and notes of spring flowers interwoven with camphor, melted licorice, crème de cassis, and pain grille. Not a blockbuster, it offers extraordinary intensity as well as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness to this offering, which tips the scales at a lofty (for this estate) 13.5% alcohol, as well as an alluring sweetness and accessibility. It probably will tighten up over the next few years. Nevertheless, it is a profound Chateau Margaux that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2035.” R. 117. Chateau Le Pin 1988 Pomerol 2 bottles $1,600-2,400 118. Chateau le Pin 1989 Pomerol “It is a toss-up as to whether Le Tertre-Roteboeuf, Lafleur, or Le Pin is Bordeaux’s most exotic and kinky wine. Le Pin has taken on a mythical reputation, as evidenced by the absurdly stratospheric prices top vintages tend to fetch. There have been some great vintages of this wine, which possesses one of the most dramatic and ostentatious bouquets of any Bordeaux. Additionally, the micro-production of 500-600 cases guarantees a chic rarity that has also helped propel the price to astronomical levels. When it is great (1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, and 1995), Le Pin provides one of the most gloriously hedonistic mouthfuls of wine produced in Bordeaux. Critics of Le Pin feel it is too obvious, too tasty, and perhaps not as long-lived as its near-by neighbors of Petrus, Lafleur, and L’Evangile. Yet my experience suggests Le Pin improves significantly in the bottle. Tasted just before or just after bottling, the wine can often reveal a blatant, aggressive oakiness that dominates the wine’s fruit. After 5-6 years of bottle age, the toasty, pain grillee aromas become less aggressive and better-integrated in the wine’s personality. This has happened with every vintage to date. With that in mind, I am not surprised by just how splendidly the 1989 and 1990 have turned out. Both wines appeared in the blind tasting in the same series as Petrus, and they were not out-classed. The 1990 Le Pin is a point or two superior to the 1989, but at this level of quality, comparisons are indeed tedious. Both are exceptional vintages, and the scores could easily be reversed at other tastings. The 1989 is slightly tighter, with more noticeable tannin than the softer, lower-acid 1990. Both take flavor intensity and exoticism to the maximum. The huge, coconut, exotic spice, jammy black fruit, sweet, expansive flavors of these two vintages of Le Pin are to die for. The oak in both wines is more well-integrated than it was only a year ago, and thus the wines no longer seem disjointed. At present, the 1990 reveals a more expansive, chewier texture than the more firmly-structured 1989, but both wines are decadently rich, hedonistic, and opulently textured. I realize the pricing of Le Pin (can a top vintage of this wine really be selling at $4000 a bottle?) precludes most rational people from purchasing it, yet forgetting the hoopla and surreal pricing, these are great wines that are capable of two decades of cellaring. I would opt to drink them earlier rather than later. The 1989 should be drunk over the next 12-20 years.” R. Parker, 96 pts. 02/97 1 bottle $1,000-1,500

Petrus - In the renowned village of Pomerol, pack-leader Chateau Petrus is unassumingly modest. Close by the road, lacking some formal alley, it is easy to overlook when contrasted with some architecturally grander neighbors. The robin’s-eggblue shutters against the limestone creates a hushed and dignified exterior to the chai. Of course the hedonistic treasures crafted within are anything but reserved... On average, only about 4,000 cases are made each vintage. -PhM 119. Chateau Petrus 1964 Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnel u. four very top shoulder, one top shoulder “Deep, dark ruby/garnet-colored, with a hint of orange and rust at the edge, the 1964 Petrus offers a huge, smoky, roasted bouquet of jammy fruit, coffee, and mocha. This huge, massively-endowed wine is packed with alcohol, glycerin, and high tannin. There is stupendous extraction of fruit and amazing length. The only criticism is that it is perhaps too big and robust for its own good. Lucky owners of well-stored bottles are advised to cellar it for a few more years. As they say, it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it! Last tasted 11/95.” R. Parker, 97 pts. 01/98 5 bottles $5,000-7,500 120. This is the only wine to display a discreet touch of ago that complements the complex but reluctant aromas of spice, blackberry and cassis. The robust, muscular flavors have tightened up considerable in the last few years and while this stops short of being a bruiser, this is a big wine that clearly has more underlying material than the Echézeaux. Very classy and stylish because even though it’s a very powerful wine, it is still elegant and harmonious.” Burghound, 92 pts. 05/04 6 bottles (owc) $2,000-3,000 135. Beautifully made, with wonderfully sweet notes of smoke, lead pencil shavings, black cherries, and cassis, an opulent texture, impressive concentration, low acidity, and silky tannin, it possesses more upfront charm and accessibility than its bigger siblings. The 1992 is a majestic young port that should ultimately rival, perhaps even surpass this house’s most recent great efforts (1985, 1977, 1970, 1963). This colossal vintage port reveals a nearly opaque black/purple color, and an explosive nose of jammy black fruits, licorice, chocolate, and spices. Extremely full-bodied and unctuously-textured, this multi-layered, enormously-endowed port reveals a finish that lasts for over a minute. Chateau Clinet 1994 Pomerol 12 bottles (owc) $600-900 Cos d’Estournel’s next-door-to-Pauillac-proximity belies its repute—the property is situated literally just above Lafite... Successive generations of the Pratts family appear as if to live and draw breath entirely to drive Cos (pronounce the “s”) to whatever heights the Pauillac trio (Latour, Mouton and Lafite) pull out. 1990 was and is a thoroughly majestic vintage. The wine can be drunk now, or cellared further. -PhM 186. Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1982 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “A spectacular performance for this wine, Cos d’Estournel’s 1982 exhibits a dark ruby/purple color with light pink at the rim. Sweet aromas of jammy black fruits intermixed with roasted espresso and vanillin jump from the glass of this young, concentrated, fullbodied, succulent effort. An opulent texture, low acidity, and splendidly pure, concentrated, blackberry and cassis fruit suggest this 1982 can be drunk now, or cellared for another 15-20 years. An awesome wine!” R. Parker, 96 pts. 06/00 12 bottles (owc) $1,800-2,400 187. Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1995 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “A wine of extraordinary intensity and accessibility, the 1995 Cos d’Estournel is a sexier, more hedonistic offering than the muscular, backward 1996. Opulent, with forward aromatics (gobs of black fruits intermixed with toasty pain grille scents and a boatload of spice), this terrific Cos possesses remarkable intensity, full body, and layers of jammy fruit nicely framed by the wine’s new oak. Because of low acidity and sweet tannin, the 1995 will be difficult to resist young, although it will age for 2-3 decades. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2025.” R. While still exceptionally youthful, this wine is powerful, dense, large-scaled, and intense. It is evolving at a snail’s pace, but should continue to improve for another 10-15 years, and last for another three decades. A candidate for perfection!” R. The Montrose 1990 has always been a delight to drink. This St Estephe is a big statuesque wine (approximately two-thirds cabernet). Tour de force! -PhM 198. Chateau Pichon Longueville, Lalande 1995 Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe “What sumptuous pleasures await those who purchase either the 1996 or 1995 Pichon-Lalande. It is hard to choose a favorite, although the 1995 is a smoother, more immediately sexy and accessible wine. It is an exquisite example of Pichon-Lalande with the Merlot component giving the wine a coffee/chocolaty/cherry component to go along with the Cabernet Sauvignon’s and Cabernet Franc’s complex blackberry/cassis fruit. The wine possesses an opaque black/ruby/purple color, and sexy, flamboyant aromatics of pain grille, black fruits, and cedar. Exquisite on the palate, this full-bodied, layered, multidimensional wine should prove to be one of the vintage’s most extraordinary success stories. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020.” R. This is drinking perfectly now and it’s hard to see it improving further though it should continue to hold without difficulty. A great ‘85 and one of the best of the DRC line-up in this vintage. Multiple and mostly consistent notes though some bottles are fresher than others and thus rate slightly higher.” Burghound 94 pts. 01/09 1 bottle $900-1,400 Two out of three is not shabby –PhM 212. Guigal La Mouline 1985 La Turque 1985 Rhone “One of the all-time great La Moulines, this still youthful and unevolved wine does not have the tannic ferocity of the 1988, or the sheer force and intensity of the 1978, 1976, and 1969, but it represents the epitome of this single-vineyard wine. Everything fits perfectly in this full-bodied, black/purple-colored wine that reveals no garnet or amber at the edge of its color. The nose offers up a formidable array of overripe black raspberries and cherries intertwined with scents of cedar, chocolate, olives, and toast. Extremely full-bodied, with an unctuosity and opulence that must be tasted to be believed, this velvety-textured wine’s finish lasts for over a minute. It is one of the most concentrated but profoundly endowed and well-balanced wines I have ever tasted. Like so many of the wines Guigal has produced from this vineyard, no matter how hard one tries to articulate its glories, words are simply inadequate. The 1985 is just beginning to achieve full maturity, where it should remain for another 15+ years. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. Last tasted 8/96.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 01/97 “The debut vintage for this wine was especially impressive in view of the fact that the vineyard was so young. The 1985 La Turque’s color remains a dark purple, with no signs of amber or lightening. The nose explodes from the glass, revealing scents of jammy black fruits, licorice, lead pencil, and smoke. Sweet, thick, highly concentrated flavors contain enough acidity and soft wood tannin to give the wine a well-focused feel. This prodigiously endowed, rich wine should continue to evolve and offer accessible drinking for another 15+ years. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. Last tasted 8/96.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 01/97 2 bottles $1,400-2,200

Opaque dark ruby, with only some amber, and a powerful, yet restrained bouquet of roasted ripe fruit, cedar, herbs, and gravelly, mineral scents, the wine remains amazingly young and tannic, with layer upon layer of ripe fruit. This is a heavyweight, old-style Cheval Blanc that should be pure nectar for at least another 10-15 years. It continues to evolve at a snail’s pace. Anticipated maturity: now-2010.” R. La Mission lies just across the road from Haut Brion. The descendents of American banker Clarence Dillon now run both properties (previously owning just Haut Brion). Given this fact, there exists an inevitable fixation to contrast the properties. Still, the arrangement between them is not really one of sibling rivalry at all. What is striking is how these wine estates and adjacent vineyards exist so close to the city center of Bordeaux (4 miles). Mercifully the unusually deep gravel soils so ideal for viticulture were never paved over! -PhM 218. A super-rich, blockbuster effort, it exhibits an opaque purple color in addition to a fabulous bouquet of black fruits, espresso, cocoa, mocha, and flowers. Whereas the Ode to E is all from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard, this cuvee is a combination of 43% from the estate vineyard, 28% from the White Hawk Vineyard, 21% from the Alban Vineyard, and 8% from the Bien Nacido Vineyard. The good news is there are nearly 1,500 cases of this recently released offering. An extraordinarily flowery nose interwoven with scents of blueberries, blackberries, incense, and graphite soars from the glass. Although not the biggest or most concentrated Syrah Krankl has made, it is one of the most nuanced, elegant, and complex. It remains full-bodied, but builds incrementally on the palate, and comes across as elegant and delicate, especially when compared to many California Syrahs. Nevertheless, the intensity is mind-boggling, and the finish lasts for nearly a minute. Drink this amazing effort over the next 10-15+ years.” R. Sloan, Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 Napa “The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, now in bottle, is an amazing wine with a dense purple color and a gorgeous nose of new saddle leather, espresso roast, licorice, chocolate, and enormous quantities of black currant, cherry, and fruit intermixed with smoked meats. Full-bodied, powerful, with a broad savory mouthfeel, a multi-layered texture, and no hardness in the finish, this wine has evolved beautifully, and can be drunk now or cellared for 25+ years.” R. Port 258. Fonseca 1963 labels mostly missing and chips to wax capsule, vintage barely legible “Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. The 1963, one of the great modern-day classics of vintage port, is an incredibly aromatic, sublime, majestic port that simply defines Fonseca’s style perfectly.” R. Parker, 96 pts. 01/89 2 bottles $350-550 259. Taylor 1955 labels missing 2 bottles $450-650 260. Taylor Fladgate 1963 labels partially missing and wax capsule chips to all, one capsule missing “This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1963 is quite fabulous yet still seemingly capable of developing for another decade or more.” R. Heitz Cellars has been one of the Valley’s standard bearers for many years. In addition, a lengthy and impressive list of alums has gone on to important careers. In a cruel twist of fate, their world-famous Martha’s Vineyard was torn out and replanted just as the late ’90s wine boom developed. –PhM 268. Every time I have this wine it is undeniable that Mouton made a richer, more persuasive wine in 1959 than in 1961. Astonishingly young and unevolved, with a black/purple color, the wine exhibits a youthful nose of cassis, minerals, and new oak. It is exceptionally powerful and super-extracted, with the fruit supported by high levels of tannin and some lusty quantities of alcohol. This mammoth, fullbodied Mouton-Rothschild should continue to evolve for another 20-30 years. It may well be a 100-year wine! Last tasted 3/97.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 01/98 1 bottle $800-1,200

A gorgeously sweet entry displays flavors of caramel, roasted coffee, jammy red and black fruits, coconut, and smoke. It is fat and full-bodied, with considerable tannin, structure, and muscle in the finish. Flamboyantly rich and precocious early in life, it is going through an awkward stage where the tannin is present, but it is also sexy, juicy, and formidably-structured. When the 1982 Cheval Blanc’s component parts become totally in sync, it will be capable of meriting a three-digit rating. Anticipated maturity: now (?)-2015.” R. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1959 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u. top shoulder, light bin soil, slight capsule nick “The 1959 is unquestionably the greatest Lafite-Rothschild that has approached full maturity. It remains to be seen whether vintages such as 1982, 1986, and 1990 will reach a similar height. The super-aromatic bouquet of flowers, black truffles, cedar, lead pencil, and red fruits is followed by one of the most powerful and concentrated Lafites I have tasted. Medium to fullbodied, velvety-textured, rich, and pure, it is a testament to what this great estate can achieve when it hits the mark. This youthful wine will last for another 30 or more years.” R. 380. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2001 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “The 2001 Lafite Rothschild’s deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur-like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. This blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot is a classic example of Lafite. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recent Lafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. The classy 2001 should be at its finest between 2007-2020.” R. Parker, 94 pts. 06/04 6 bottles $1,400-2,000

Chateau Latour 1995 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u. bottom neck “A beauty, the opaque dense purple-colored 1995 exhibits jammy cassis, vanillin, and minerals in its fragrant but still youthful aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, with exceptional purity, superb concentration, and a long, intense, ripe, 40-second finish, this is a magnificent example of Latour. As the wine sat in the glass, scents of roasted espresso and toasty new oak emerged. This classic will require considerable cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050.” R. Ullage (Level of Wine) Illustration and Interpretations For Bordeaux, Port, and other shouldered bottles n. bn. vts. ts. hs. ms. lms. s.

ullage is into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder; usual level for Bordeaux older than 15 yrs high shoulder; usual cork reduction, often found in Bordeaux over 20 yrs, low risk mid shoulder; variation likely as indicates cork deterioration low mid shoulder; some risks, reflected in estimates shoulder; risky, reflected in estimates into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder high shoulder mid shoulder low mid shoulder shoulder

Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 15 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are catalogued referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloguing reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) magnum (2xbt) marie jeanne (3xbt) double magnum (4xbt)

jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy

half bottle (hbt) split (1/4 bottle) Champagne

Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when catalogued; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful) until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.

Collection of Wines Your Wines Lower Falls Wine Co. will endeavor to release or transport your wine to you as quickly as possible. We request your partnership in making sure no harm arises during storage, collection or transportation. We may offer suggestions as to the best course of action to safeguard your purchase. Fees charged are only to recover associated costs and are not intended to create a profit center from the act of getting your wines to you.
