Six Music Notation Programs second edition

Engraving in Encore, Finale, LilyPond, Overture, Score and Sibelius, of Vyssotsky’s Elegy as arranged for classical guitar by Matanya Ophee

Introduction Music notation is art, science and history. See the Grove Concise Encyclopedia of Music at http://www.wqxr.com/cgi-bin/iowa/cla/learning/grove.html for an overview of the European tradition. Since the advent of the personal computer and notation programs for it, part of the criteria for program choice has been the engraving quality each offers: design of music symbols the program uses, and allotment of spacing between characters. Symbols and spacing serve, first, in the interest of legibility. Beyond that, notation benefits from good graphic design just as does prose or poetry: the page which is more inviting to read can get a better reading. For discussion and examples of engraving conventions supporting quality of design, see the Music Publishers’ Association guide at http://www.mpa.org/music_notation/, and others at http://www2.coloradocollege.edu/dept/mu/mu2/musicpress/, http://www.music-notation.info/, and http://treblis.com/Notation/Music.htm. A large collection of related links is at http://ace.acadiau.ca/score/others.htm. Comparison of engraved output is only one among many criteria by which to judge a music program. Feature set, flexibility and ease of use, and integration with MIDI and VST are other considerations. For this second edition, the LilyPond sample was added and the samples in Overture and Sibelius were updated. John Rethorst [email protected] September 1, 2006
