What is Single-User, Single-Tasking OS? As the name implies, Single-useroperating system is designed to manage the computer so that one user can effectively do one thing at a time. The Palm OS for Palm handheld computers is a good example of a modern single-user, singletask operating system.

What is the difference between a single-user and a multi-user operating system? Single-user OS is that OS which support only one user at a time. for example: DOS, WINDOWS 3X, WINDOWS 95/97/98 etc. Multi-user OS is that which support more than one users at the same time. in these types of OS there is a server and all the users are provided different terminals. these terminals are connected to the server. for example: UNIX, LYNIX, WINDOWS VISTA etc.

DOS (Disk Operating System) was the first widely-installed operating system for personal computers. (Earlier, the same name had been used for an IBM operating system for a line of business computers.) Dos is a single user, single task OS. Once a process is begun, it must be allowed to run until finished before the same process can be used again. there are several version of DOS.that are DRDOS,free DOS,MS-DOS,Novell DOS,Open DOS,PCDOS,PTS-DOS,ROM-DOS and several others.

Later Windows 3.1 was released in 1992 by Microsoft and was one of the first major PC GUI operating systems widely used. Windows 3.1 allowed users to utilize several features previously not available in MS-DOS.

Windows 95 is a consumer-oriented graphical user interfacebased operating system. It was released on August 24, 1995 by Microsoft,[2] and was a significant progression from the company's previous Windows products. During development it was referred to as Windows 4.0 or by the internal codename Windows Chicago. It features significant improvements over its predecessor, Windows 3.1, most visibly in the graphical user interface (GUI). There were also major changes made at lower levels of the operating system.

Windows Millennium, also known as Windows ME, was introduced September 14, 2000 to the general public as the upgrade for Windows 95 and Windows 98 users and is designed for end-users. Microsoft Windows CE 1.0 was originally released in 1996 to compete in the Palm Device Assistant Category. Windows CE, as shown below, has many of the same features as Windows 95. In addition to the look of Windows 95, Windows CE also includes similar applications such as Pocket Excel, Pocket Word, and Pocket Power.
