Science Centr e unleashes "T he Futur e Is W ild" on Singapor e First 3D Animated Television Co-Production by ST Electronics Singapore, 28 November 2008 – The Science Centre Singapore offers a glimpse of tomorrow with the Asian debut of "The Future is Wild", a first-of-its-kind 3D animated children’s TV series co-produced in Singapore. Jointly-produced by Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited’s subsidiary, ST Electronics (Training & Simulation Systems) Pte Ltd, and Nelvana with the support of the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), "The Future is Wild" is the first Singaporean 3D animated television co-production to have been broadcasted on TV in the United States and Germany. It will also be the first 3D animated TV series to be broadcast locally when it airs on the new okto channel from 3 January 2009 at 1:30 pm. “At Science Centre we aim to make learning fun, and demonstrate the link between science, technology and the world around us. Screening a state-of-art 3D series like 'The Future is Wild' is an excellent way to showcase how science can not only educate, but also inspire and entertain, and we’re thrilled to offer it here at Science Centre,” said Dr. Chew Tuan Chiong, Chief Executive, Science Centre Singapore. “ST Electronics’ foray into the world of Interactive Digital Media and Animation since 2003 has seen us collaborating with and gaining recognition from internationally renowned players. We are appreciative of MDA’s support for the production of 'The Future is Wild'. The Science Centre is another valued partner which provides us with an excellent avenue to showcase our Simulation, Animation, Games and Edutainment (SAGE) technologies to the general public. We will jointly market and promote 'The Future is Wild' Kids Series to museums and science centres worldwide through permanent and travelling exhibitions, workshops and TV series preludes. We hope that this is the first of many collaborations to come,” said Mr Seah Moon Ming, President of ST Electronics. “MDA is delighted that the animated series 'The Future Is Wild' will be aired on Mediacorp's okto channel following the series' successful launch in the US and Germany since October 2007. Not only does it showcase a growing pool of creative animation talents that we have in Singapore, the TV series is also a testament of Singapore animation industry's capabilities in international co-productions. Today, our local animation companies are undertaking more and more high quality animation projects with leading international partners. We can therefore look forward to more of such content aired on our local TV channels. We congratulate ST Electronics for its fine efforts in developing The Future is Wild and its collaboration with the Science Centre which will surely ignite much curiosity amongst children,” said Mr Seto Lok Yin, Assistant Chief Executive Officer (Industry) of MDA. Science Centre Singapore and ST Electronics will also be partnering to develop creative exhibition concepts involving animatronics, a 4D theatre experience, simulator rides and interactive gaming consoles. Based on a similarly-named documentary that became the all-time top-rated prime time TV show on Animal Planet, this 26-part series follows the adventures of Ethan, Emily and Luis, three adventurous present-day children who are brought to the future by C.G., a girl from 12,000 A.D. Together they solve mysteries behind Earth’s evolution, in an exotic evolved world of extreme climates and strange animals.

Apart from the exciting storyline injected with witty humour, audiences will also be wowed by the creative use of both 3D and 2D elements that bring the futuristic images and ideas to life. In conjunction with Maya-based software, the animation team used ambient occlusion, a shading method which helps add realism to local reflection models. This brings a softer look to CG animation, and coupled with handheld camera effects, imparts a modern, polished look. Playing a driving role in bringing these futuristic images and ideas to life is director Mike Fallows and his CG (computer graphics) animation team at Toronto’s Nelvana. The Emmywinning director, whose work includes acclaimed programmes such as Donkey Kong Country, Rolie Polie Olie, Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Kids and Jane and the Dragon, was drawn to the project because of all its inherent creative challenges. Splitting the work with Nelvana on the project is ST Electronics’ animation studio, iVL Animation, which previously worked with Fallows on Jane and the Dragon. "The Future is Wild" will screen at Science Centre from 29 November 2008 to 2 January 2009 and is suitable for families of all ages.
