West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Hires Executive Director The West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce has hired Tinalyn Firestone as our Executive Director. She will be responsible for boosting membership, sponsor services, e v e nt s and expanding the Chamber’s outreach. Tinalyn brings more than 20 years of Chamber of Commerce experience with her to our Chamber after successfully operating and growing the influence and membership for several Chambers. Firestone was Executive Director of the 700-member Woodland Hills -Tarzana Chamber of Commerce, where she boosted that Chamber’s

membership by 45 percent, organized and oversaw a merger and created a fiveyear action plan for the organization. Quote from their Past Chairman, “Tinalyn has extensive experience with Chambers of Commerce. She managed a staff of two other employees

and numerous volunteers. We exceeded all of our goals in membership growth, event revenues, budgets and financial strengths. Tinalyn always responded quickly to board and member requests and was well liked throughout our community”. Tinalyn brings over twenty years of Chamber experience to our membership. We are making progress in elevating our profile through events and more efficient communication. Very shortly you will be offered an opportunity to leverage your membership cost by utilizing our newly designed website to advertise your business. As well, you may know we now have a new travel component managed by Judith Wilson offering a nine day visit to China at an unusually competitive price with top tier accommodations. In the planning stage are opportunities to meet and hear from our elected officials on issues that concern us, wine tasting events, dinner dances, a dynamic new Chamber Directory and marketing program called “Shop West L.A.”, as well as a celebration of the Chamber’s 65th Anniversary. These are only a few of the ways in which your management is working for you. As a mostly volunteer organization we cannot however do it all. We need your participation. 2009 BACKLOT FILM FESTIVAL to honor MICKEY ROONEY with Thomas Ince Award The 2009 Backlot Film Festival is pleased to announce that legendary actor Mickey Rooney has accepted the honor of receiving the Festival's prestigious " T h o m a s Ince Award." The award is named for the pioneer producer of early filmmaking who introduced production procedures and quality of standards that set the model and helped mold the distinct image of Hollywood films to this day, and who built two movie studios that still stand in Culver City today – the current Sony Pictures Entertainment and The Culver Studios. Mr. Rooney joins a stellar group of previous winners: Daniel Selznick, Budd Schulberg and Carl Reiner. His acceptance serves to continue the mission and goals of the Backlot Film Festival: to cultivate an appreciation of the rich heritage of the motion picture industry and to bring greater understanding of the debt current filmmakers owe to the earlier pioneers. The Tribute and Gala Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday evening, October 10, 2009, at the historic Veterans Memorial Building Auditorium in Culver City. A program of Rooney’s classic films will highlight the festival, and special guests are sure to attend this tribute.

In addition, the Backlot Film Festival, with the cooperation and support of Steve Saltzman, grandson of the legendary film producer Arthur Freed and President of Arthur Freed Productions, has established the “Arthur Freed Award” to the best student film submitted to our festival. Moreover, its sponsorships with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Brothers Distribution have to date attracted such industry supporters as actors Ben Stiller, Rob Reiner and John Kerr, film historian and critic Leonard Maltin, Los Angeles Times Arts Editor Emeritus Charles Champlin, and film historian/archivists Marvin Paige of the Marvin Paige Motion Picture and Marc Wanamaker of Bison Archives, among others. The festival is open to fiction features and documentaries, fiction shorts and documentaries, music videos and student films. Deadline for entries is August 15, 2009.
