SCHOOL ALL YEAR REUNION

Recently I was looking through the archives and memorabilia of the Parish. I came across a 1937 bulletin. In the late 1930's and 1940's the Parish put out a monthly bulletin instead of a weekly one. I was very surprised to see that the custom in those days was for the pastor (Rev. George N. Murphy) to publish in the bulletin the names of the parishioners and the amount of money they were putting into the weekly and monthly collections. I’d never heard of this before. The real eye opener was that most people were giving one or two dollars in the weekly collection (each 1937 dollar is the equivalent of $14.10 today). Can you imagine that during the Great Depression there were people donating $14.10 and $28.20 to the Church in the weekly and monthly collections! Not only that, but at the same time, they were donating an additional one or two dollars to the building fund for the Church in which we now sit. As the bulletin presents it, at least 50% of the people were giving the equivalent of $84.60 to the Church (or, $21.15 per week). And this was during the Great Depression! And here we are, 70 years later, and sadly I must report that there are still a number of people who only put one or two dollars in the collection – which of course is not the equivalent of $14.10! Sort of makes you think, doesn’t it? God bless you,

Father Richard

New bookcases are being built for our Seton Library to hold the wonderful new volumes added to our 6,000 books already there. We also will be delighted to see the return of our pin flowering tree in the front of our school building on the Chestnut Street corner. The beautiful flowering cherry tree was taken down during last year's construction but is being replaced through the generosity of the Picillo family. A marker will be placed with the tree dedicating it to all the deceased priests who served at St. Stephen Parish over the years.

Vocation Reflection ^ “God wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth.” These words of St. Paul to Timothy speak loudly to the heart disposed to do God’s will. We are all called to be agents of truth in a world seeking a path to salvation. Some of us are chosen to witness in a particular way to the salvation waiting for those who teach and live the truth by offering themselves as priests or religious. The religious life is a very powerful way one can serve God and the Church in the pursuit of truth and salvation.
