THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING WATER SAFETY
1
Abstract Learning about water safety has a large impact on one’s safety throughout life. Research shows that drowning is a large issue not only in America, but throughout the world. It is especially an issue for men and African Americans. These drownings could be partially prevented with swimming lessons. Along with learning to swim, it is also important to learn general water safety. This includes knowing where one should and should not swim, about recreational water illnesses and how to keep children safe around water, including the bathtub. Another major topic that should be learned is how to be safe while participating in water recreation, as one considerable cause of drowning is neglecting to wear a lifejacket on boats. Throughout one’s life, people need to become educated on different parts of water safety in order to keep themselves and children safe. Through research, it is evident that learning the concepts of swimming and water safety are important. These skills can prevent dangerous situations throughout life and make water recreation a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Keywords: water safety, drowning, boat safety, swimming
