A Semi – Detailed Lesson Plan In Mathematics I.
Objectives: At the end of 60 – minute period, the students should be able to: A. Define median; B. Find the median of ungrouped data; C. Describe and illustrate the median of ungrouped data.
II.
Subject Matter: A. Topic: Median of Ungrouped Data B. References: K-12 Curriculum Guide. Abuzo, Emmanuel, et.al. (2013). Mathematics – Grade 8 Learner’s Module. Department of Education. 497 – 498. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, Visual Aid, Scotch Tape, Chalk and Board D. Processes/Skills: Defining, Finding, Describing and Illustrating
III.
Procedure: A. Daily Routine: a. Prayer b. Greetings c. Checking of Attendance B. Review of the Past Lesson: What was our lesson last meeting? What is mean? What is the mean of the following data: 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60? C. Motivation: Let’s have an activity. This activity is called PICTOWORD. You will guess the pictures plus the words that are presented in front. D. Presentation of the Lesson: Our topic for today is all about Median of Ungrouped Data. Here, we are going to define, find, describe and illustrate median of ungrouped data.
E. Lesson Proper: Sonya’s kitchen received an invitation to a food exposition for one person. The service crew of 7 members is very eager to go. To be fair to all, Sonya decided to choose a person whose age is also the median age of her seven members. Sonya’s Kitchen Crew
Service Crew Age Waiter Cook B Waiter B Cashier Cook A Waitress Manager
18 20 18 19 21 18 47
In helping Sonya, we need to follow the steps below. a. b. c. d. e.
Arrange the ages in numerical order. What is the middle value? Is there a crew with this representative age? How many are younger than this age? Older than this age? Who is the representative of Sonya’s Kitchen in the Food Fair?
At the end of the month, Sonya’s kitchen hired another crew member whose age is 22. The data now consist of eight ages: 18, 20, 18, 19, 21, 18, 47, and 22, an even number. How many middle entries are there? Sonya’s Kitchen Crew
Let’s find out by following these simple steps. a. b. c. d. e.
Arrange the crew’s ages in numerical order. Find the two middle values (ages). Get the average of the two middle values. What is now the median age? How many are below this age? Above this age?
What is median? If the set of data is odd and the data is already arranged in either descending or ascending order, how can you find the median? How about if the given set of data is even? F. Application: The participants are divided into three groups and each group will find the median of the problem given to them. After 5 minutes, the presenter of each group will present their work in front. Group 1: Andrea’s scores in 10 quizzes during the first quarter are 8, 7, 6, 10, 9, 5, 9, 6, 10, and 7. Group 2: The library logbook of CENHS shows that 58, 60, 54, 35 and 97 books, respectively, were borrowed from Monday to Friday last week. Group 3: The front row in a movie theatre has 23 seats. If you were asked to sit in the seat that occupied the median position, in which seat would you have to sit? G. Valuing: Relate our topic for today in your life class. Remember to always put God first in your life class. He should be the center of it all from beginning to the end. H. Generalization: What is median?
If the set of data is odd and the data is already arranged in either descending or ascending order, how can you find the median? How about if the given set of data is even?
IV.
Evaluation:
Find the median of the following data. 1. 83, 84, 85, 86, 82 2. 80, 82, 84, 86 3. 79, 81, 80, 80, 81 4. 85, 75, 82, 78 5. 75, 83, 82, 80, 76
V.
Assignment:
Compute for the median score of 20 students in a math quiz. 25, 33, 35, 45, 34, 26, 29, 35, 38, 40, 45, 38, 28, 29, 25, 39, 32, 37, 47, 45.
