Team Notes

Alabama Men For the first time in school history, the No. 6 Alabama men's cross country team claimed back-to-back SEC Championships. The meet was held on Saturday at the Ole Miss Cross Country Course in Oxford, Miss. Alabama became the first team other than Arkansas to win consecutive titles since Tennessee did so in 1989-90. No. 28 Arkansas made Alabama earn the title today finishing just five points behind in second by a score of 56-61. The Crimson Tide were paced to their third conference title in school history by Moses Kiptoo who finished sixth with a time of 24:57.75. Tyson David followed in seventh and a time of 24:58.45. Both earned First Team All-SEC honors. Earning Second Team All-SEC were Fred Samoei (25:10.73) and Julius Bor (25:16.52) who crossed the line in 12th and 14th place, respectively. Emmanuel Bor (25:26.27) and Andrew Kirwa (25:27.20) just missed earning another All-SEC accolade as they finished in 17th and 18th, respectively. Alabama will return to competition on Nov. 14 when they host the NCAA South Region Championships at the Harry Pritchett Running Park. Women After turning in the best finish since 2000 last season when they placed seventh, the Alabama women's cross country did it again Saturday with a fifth place finish tallying 141 points at the SEC Championships this year. The meet was held at the Ole Miss Cross Country Course in Oxford, Miss. Even though the squad didn't have any All-SEC performers, Alabama turned in their best team performance since 2000 when they finished fifth as well. The Crimson Tide were led by Kelsey Johnson who finished 17th with a time of 22:10.24. Johnson was just four places from earning All-SEC for the second time in her career. Haley Moody followed in 23rd place and a time of 22:22.44. Sara Vaughn (22:36.86) and Leigh Gilmore (22:37.10) crossed the finish line in 32nd and 33rd respectively. Sarah Gilmore rounded out the top five for the Tide finishing 36th and a time of 22:43.54. The Crimson Tide had a goal of placing five ladies in the top 35 overall. They finished with their fifth runner in 36th. By doing so, Alabama tallied its lowest point total since 1997. Alabama will return to competition on Nov. 14 when they host the NCAA South Region Championships at the Harry Pritchett Running Park. Arkansas Men No. 28 men's cross country earned a runner-up finish in the team race behind No. 6 Alabama at the 2009 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Ole Miss. The Razorbacks scored 61 points behind the Crimson Tide's 56 points. No. 24 Auburn rounded out the top three with 86 points. Led by Ulrey's runner-up finish in the individual race, the Razorbacks finished three runners in the top nine, five scorers in the top 23 and all nine finishers in the top 66. Ulrey, in his SEC cross country debut, earned a runner-up finish with his 8,000-meter time of 24:33.30. Running his first 8K in an Arkansas uniform, he earned first-team All-SEC honors and was the top newcomer in the race. Junior Lane Boyer earned his second All-SEC honor with his eighth-place finish. Boyer clocked an 8K time of 24:59.83 to earn second-team All-SEC honors. Freshman Solomon Haile, making his SEC cross country debut, was Arkansas' third runner. He picked up a ninth-place finish with a time of 25:01.12. Haile was the top freshman finisher, earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors and was named second-team All-SEC. The Razorbacks will compete next at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships, Sat., Nov. 14, at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Women No. 29 women's cross country earned a bronze finish in the team race at the 2009 SEC Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Ole Miss. Paced by junior Miranda Walker's 10th-place finish, Arkansas finished three in the top 16, five scorers in the top 26 and all seven finishers in the top 82. Walker was Arkansas' top finisher in 10th-place. Her time of 21:41.07 earned her a spot on the second-team All-SEC. She has led the Razorbacks in all five meets this season. Freshman Alyssa Allison, in her SEC cross country debut, was Arkansas' second finisher. She was 15th with her 6,000-meter time of 22:01.69. She was named to the SEC All-Freshman team as the second freshman finisher overall and was one spot away from earning second-team All-SEC honors. The Razorbacks will compete next at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships, Sat., Nov. 14, at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Auburn Men Senior Jean-Pierre Weerts surprised at the SEC meet placing fourth with a time of 24:41.00. At last season’s meet, Weerts placed 39th, a 35-place improvement from a year ago… Senior All-American Felix Kiboiywo is finally hitting his form after an injury plagued early portion of the season, as he finished as Auburn’s top-finisher for the first time this season after placing third in the race with a time of 24:37.08… Ben Cheruiyot placed fifth in his first SEC Championship with a time of 24:52.54. His fifth-place finish ranked him as Auburn’s third finisher, marking the first time this season Cheruiyot was not the Tigers top-finisher… Auburn has three runners in the top-five, which was also matched by Arkansas, who had the second, eighth and ninth finishers. Women Junior Holly Knight was Auburn’s top-finisher for the fifth time this season after placing sixth with a time of 21:26.58. Stephanie Barnes was Auburn’s second finisher for the fourth time this season after placing eighth 21:34.30 Florida Men The Florida men placed fourth in the SEC Championships for the second year in a row. The Gators were picked to finish fourth by the league coaches at the beginning of the season. UF was led by senior Justin Taylor (St. Augustine, Fla.), who earned his first All-SEC honors with a 10th-place finish. He was followed by juniors Anthony Morales (Palm Coast, Fla.), who came in 15th and James Uthmeier (Destin, Fla.), who placed 24th. Seniors Aaron Kindt (Orlando, Fla.) and Matt Hensley (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) finished out the scoring for the Gators, coming in 35th and 36th, respectively. The Gators battled to score 120 points racing only seven runners in the meet. They have the week off before heading to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the NCAA South Regional. The men are currently ranked fourth in the region. Women The No. 5 Florida women won the program's fourth Southeastern Conference title, the first since 1997, on Saturday as the Gators recorded their best score in UF history (24). All five scoring runners finished in the top 10 as redshirt sophomore Rebecca Lowe (Vaucluse, Australia) earned her first career victory in grand fashion - an SEC individual title. It marked the fifth title by the fourth Florida runner in women's history and the last since Becki Wells won back-toback titles in 1995 and 1996. Junior Charlotte Browning (Pulborough, England) gave the Gators a 1-2 punch as she placed second and senior Stacey Johnson

came in fifth. Sophomore Genevieve LaCaze (Daisy Hill, Australia), last year's SEC Freshman of the Year, and senior Julie Northrup (Vero Beach, Fla.) rounded out the Gators' scoring with seventh- and ninth-place finishes, respectively. Lowe's winning time of 20:57.35 ranked 10th in Florida record books for 6K conference times. The Gators have the week off before they had to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the NCAA South Regional, in which they are currently ranked No. 1. Georgia Men The Bulldogs finished fifth at the SEC Championships in Oxford, Miss., on Oct. 31, giving Georgia its best finish since a fifth-place finish in 2006. Senior captain Bejan Abtahi led his team for the fifth straight meet this year after grabbing the top finish of his career at an SEC meet (21st – 25:39.87). Senior Dustin Tetley, who is also a captain for the Bulldogs, was next across the finish line after taking 25th with a time of 25:54.98. Georgia’s third finisher, freshman Bill Matthews, earned All-SEC Freshman honors after clocking a 25:58.66 for 27th place to score for the Bulldogs. Georgia’s other two scorers were sophomore Matt Cleaver (28th – 25:59.24) and Brett Richardson, who also earned All-SEC Freshman honors after taking 32nd overall (26:03.43) during his first SEC meet. Richardson is a transfer from Georgia State after competing for the Panthers’ track team in 2009. The Bulldogs return to action at the NCAA Regional Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 14. Women Sophomore Kristie Krueger finished fourth overall with a career-best time of 21:17.80 to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a fourth-place finish at the SEC Championships. Krueger had the best finish for the Georgia women since Sarah Madebach won the 2007 SEC meet. Senior Bridget Lyons, who is a co-captain with Krueger, had a career-best finish of 11th at the SEC meet after clocking a 21:45.03 to be Georgia’s second finisher. Junior Kylie Foley, who was the Lady Bulldogs’ top finisher at the 2008 meet, was third for Georgia on Saturday and 25th overall with a season-best time of 22:26.30. Georgia’s fourth finisher was senior Taylor Adams, a middle-distance specialist who registered a personal-best time of 22:54.49 for 40th place. This marked Adams’ top finish at a conference meet in her career. Freshman Allyson McGinty was the Lady Bulldogs final scorer after taking 42nd (22:58.63) during her first SEC meet experience. The Lady Bulldogs travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to compete at the NCAA Regional Championships on Nov. 14. Kentucky Men Two Kentucky men earned All-SEC honors at the Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships after placing seventh at the University of Mississippi Golf Course in Oxford, Miss., Saturday. For the second time this season, freshman Luis Orta led the UK men to the finish, completing the 8K course in 25:12 to place 13th overall and earn All-SEC Second Team accolades. Orta’s finish at the league meet was the best by a Wildcat since 2005. Junior Adam Henken clocked in at 25:29 to finish second on the team and 20th overall. First-year runner Matt Sonnenfeldt placed 31st overall in a time of 26:02. Orta and Sonnenfeldt both earned conference All-Freshman team honors as a result of their finishes. Sophomore Matt Wagner continued his streak of scoring in each meet this season by finishing 42nd in a time of 26:31. Freshman Tyler Dickinson rounded out the scoring for the Cats in 48th place, stopping the clock at 26:53. UK totaled 152 points overall to finish seventh overall. The Wildcats compete in the Bluegrass state Nov. 14 at the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Louisville in the Derby City's E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. Women Two Kentucky women earned All-SEC honors at the Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships after placing seventh at the University of Mississippi Golf Course in Oxford, Miss., Saturday. On the 6K women's course, first-year runner Chelsea Oswald was the first Wildcat across the finish line for the second time this season, placing 14th overall to claim All-SEC Second Team recognition. Oswald completed the course in 21:56. Classmate Cally Macumber clocked in at 22:16 to place 19th overall. As a result of their top finishes, Oswald and Macumber both notched All-Freshman team awards from the league. Fellow freshman Samantha Norman ran at a clip of 22:47 to finish 38th in the conference. Another first-year runner placed fourth for the Cats as Amanda Whowell crossed the finish in 23:18; good for 53rd overall. Junior Katherine Peterson was the final scorer for UK in the 59th spot running a mark of 23:28. The Wildcats tallied 175 points to finish eighth in the SEC. The Wildcats compete in the Bluegrass state Nov. 14 at the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Louisville in the Derby City's E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. LSU Men The LSU men's cross country team had a disappointing showing at the SEC Championships Saturday in Oxford, finishing 11th out of 11 teams with 321 points. Sophomore Cullen Doody paced the Tigers with a 27:55.92. Doody has been LSU’s top male finisher in every meet this season. Junior Kyle Hecker was the next Tiger to cross with a 28:19.59. “Effort-wise, we gave our best effort,” LSU cross country coach Mark Elliott said. “The talent level in SEC cross country is just extraordinary, and with us losing our top three runners from last season, it’s tough to come back and compete right away.” Six other Tigers, Sean Swanner, Kenneth Schiffman, Ken Ehrhardt, Paras Shah,Luke Dessauer and Frank Bohn, all came in together within 20 seconds of one another. Women The LSU women's cross country team finished with 335 points Saturday at the SEC Championships in Oxford, and finished 11th out of 12 teams, edging Ole Miss by only three points. Charlene Lipsey was the Lady Tigers’ top finisher for the second meet in a row, as she clocked a 23:38.38. Junior Katie Hamel and sophomore Laura Carleton finished close behind Lipsey, within 10 seconds of one another. “The women have been consistent all season,” Elliott said. “They competed well. Charlene has done a really nice job, especially since she is a track runner, and she really isn’t used to cross country.” Both the men’s and women’s teams will enjoy a weekend off before returning to action Nov. 14 at the NCAA South Central Regionals in Waco, Texas. Ole Miss Men Ole Miss junior Barnabas Kirui won his second SEC cross country championship of his career on Saturday by taking the conference crown with a time of 24:24.75 Saturday morning at the Ole Miss Golf Course. Kirui is the only athlete in school history to be a two-time SEC Cross Country champion. In addi-

tion, he is one of only two athletes ever at Ole Miss to win the title. Pablo Sierra, who was in attendance Saturday, won the first individual title in school history in 1992. Kirui helped the Rebel men's team finish in ninth place with a total of 249 points on his way to being named to the All-SEC first team. Senior Gabriel Ngwiri turned in a 29th place finish for the Rebels and crossed the finish line following his time of 26:00.04. Senior Jordan Michael took 90th place and posted a time of 29:57.63, while junior Alejandro Quintana was next with his time of 30:38.25. Sophomore Erik Solberg raced to a 92nd place finish and recorded a time of 30:58.38, and Jack Hammond rounded out the Rebel runners with his mark of 31:37.38 on his way to a 93rd place finish. Women On the women's side, s ophomore Logan Waites led the way for the Ole Miss women's team and earned a 45th place finish with her time of 23:00.92. Freshman Anne Threlkeld, a native of Oxford, finished second for the Rebels and 77th overall with her time of 24:19.46. Julie Little was next for Ole Miss and posted a time of 24:32.70 on her way to a 79th place finish. Junior Allison Kneip took 88th overall with a time of 24:57.86, while Anna Adams recorded a time of 26:04.99. Ella Gentry finished with a time of 27:33.15, and sophomore Jamie McCulloch rounded out the women's team runners after racing to a time of 29:01.06. Ole Miss returns to action Nov. 14 when the Rebels travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take part in the NCAA South Regional. Mississippi State Men Mississippi State men’s cross country finished the 2009 SEC Cross Country Championships with an 8th place finish Saturday. Bulldogs Adam Lenz and Daniel Simpkins led a young men’s team through the rough conditions to finish as MSU’s top 2 runners. Lenz ran 26:20.44 to finish as MSU’s top finisher, followed by Simpkins who ran 26:21.11 respectively. With the SEC Championships completed, MSU cross country returns to prepare for the NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 14. Women Mississippi State’s women’s cross country ended competition at the 2009 SEC Championships on Ole Miss’ muddy rain-soaked golf course in Oxford Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs ended the day with a 10th-place finish in the women’s 6K race. Junior Simone Domingue finished in 22:57.90 as the Lady Bulldogs No. 1 runner, while freshman Chloe Phillips was right behind completing her first SEC Championship race in 23:27.76. With the SEC Championships completed, MSU cross country returns to prepare for the NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 14. South Carolina South Carolina's cross country team had its best finish at the SEC Championships in eight years after the team placed ninth Saturday with 246 points. The finish was the best placing for the Gamecocks since the team took seventh overall at the 2001 championships. Sophomore Beatrice Biwott paced South Carolina with a 31st place finish at 22:35.62, followed by senior Dani Barnes (48th), junior Ashley Evens (49th) and freshman Tatum Tyler (52nd). The Gamecocks return to action Saturday, Nov. 14 when the team travels to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional meet. Tennessee Men The Tennessee men put one runner on the All-SEC squad and another on the SEC All-Freshman Team at the SEC Championship meet…Junior Michael Spooner made the all-league roll for the second straight season, this time finishing 11th in 25:07.60…He had placed 13th a year ago…Leoule Degfae earned rookie acclaim, running third for the Big Orange and placing 33rd overall in 26:06.12…The Vols wound up finishing sixth as a team with 142 points…Junior college transfer Peter Sigilai ran second for the squad for the second time and was a top-two team finisher for the fourth time, crossing the line 22nd in 25:44.72 on the 8,000-meter course. Women The Tennessee women turned in a runner-up finish at the SEC Championships, marking the program’s ninth consecutive top-three showing and the fifth toptwo effort of the J.J. Clark era…For the first time since 1990, someone other than J.J. Clark (Florida, Tennessee) and Lance Harter (Arkansas) directed their team to an SEC title…Clark, though, now owns five SEC titles and has posted four runner-up finishes with his teams through the years…Lady Vol Jackie Areson collected the first All-SEC honor of her career, covering the soggy Ole Miss Golf Course layout in 21:12.13 to place third and match Sarah Bowman’s effort of a year ago…Areson has paced Tennessee in all five races this season and has scored for the team in 21 consecutive races during her collegiate career…By placing 12th, junior Brittany Sheffey earned second-team all-league acclaim for the second straight year, while senior Katie Van Horn garnered her second All-SEC award by bouncing back from a redshirt year in 2008 to match her second-team status of 2007. Vanderbilt Men The Vanderbilt men’s cross country team totaled 282 points to finish in tenth place at the 2009 SEC Championships last weekend in Oxford, Miss. The Commodores finished 39 points out of the host Ole Miss’ ninth place finish.The men had 282 total points on the day, putting them just out of the reach of host Ole Miss, who placed ninth. Sophomore Jenner Kizer paced the Commodores with an 8K time of 26:42.42, good for 45th place overall. Following close behind, with a time of 27:21.17 was freshman Chris Baker, who placed 59th. Rounding out the effort for the Commodores in Oxford was freshman Billy Malmed (67th), junior Bram Chisholm (73rd), sophomore Kyle Rewick (74th), senior Thomas Davis (77th), senior James Kasten (84th), sophomore Casey Howards (87th), freshman Tomas Salazar (88th), and freshman Joe Newman (89th). “Overall, I thought the men gave a good team effort at SECs, especially Jenner Kizer and Chris Baker,” Head Coach Steve Keith said. “We wanted to get both Ole Miss and LSU, but came up a bit short. We ran a much better race than last year and did exceedingly well for a very young team.” Vanderbilt will return to the course in two weeks when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the NCAA South Regionals on Nov. 14. Women The Vanderbilt women’s cross country team recorded its fifth best finish in the school’s 27-year history with a sixth place finish at the 2009 SEC Championships last weekend in Oxford, Miss. school history last weekend The Commodores finished the meet with 142 points, good for a sixth place finish and only point out of fifth place. VU was led by freshman Jordan White, who placed 22nd overall, earning All-SEC freshman honors. Joining her on the All-SEC freshman team was Allie Scalf, who finished 13 seconds behind White in 30th place with a 22:34.26. The Commodore women’s team rounded out top 30 finishes with sophomore Louise Hannallah placing 27th with a time of 22:27.51 and junior Rita Jorgensen placing close behind at 28th with a time of 22:30.24. The Commodores also received solid efforts from junior Kristabel Doebel-Hickok (35th), freshman Kristen Findley (44th), sophomore Alexa Rogers (56th), senior Ellen Black (71st), and sophomore Erin McManus (96th). Vanderbilt will return to the course in two weeks when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the NCAA South Regionals on Nov. 14.
