Sociology 3/Theology 4 Social Teachings of the Church Finals Term Project I. The Encyclicals 30% 1. By this time I have assumed that you have read the encyclicals assigned to you since the last week of January. 2. Make a 15 minute summary/application video of the encyclicals comprising the following: a. The social context of the encyclical. When and why was the encyclical written, what was happening at that time? b. 5 Major Points of the Encyclical. What major points did the encyclical give? Give some clear explanations about it. c. Research on a certain Philippine Social Problem/Situation/Issue/Circumstance and propose solutions to the social problem/situation/issue/circumstance using the points of the encyclical assigned to you. Make sure that no group will have the same problem/situation/issue/circumstance to discuss. 3. I leave the making of the video to your creativity. 4. Grading Criteria: 50 points - breadth of knowledge about the encyclical 30 points - breadth of knowledge about the social issue and application of the encyclical to it. 20 points - creativity ______________________ Total: 100 points II. Social Experiment and Reflection 30% (choose only one) 1. This second part will be the social immersion and reflection of your encyclical group in a certain social condition of the people living in our present society. This activity is the application of everything that we have studied from the beginning up to the end. This is also aimed at experiencing the life of ordinary poor Filipinos who have nothing with them except their willingness and motivation to live, so that, after this short immersion, you will at least have a peek into how their lives are and what they are experiencing. In the end, we expect that you can have a heart to understand them and be able to extend help to them. Another is to participate in incarnating the values of Jesus of being with others, understanding their situations and formulating ways of helping them. 2. Accomplish the following: Volunteer to help the maintenance of our school in segregating the trashes of the university. 3. The following must be accomplished as a group. Volunteer to help in the collection and segregation of trash: Set an appointment with the local janitor/janitress in your building or any janitor/janitress of other buildings and ask them to help you out in your immersion. Do this on your free time, meaning your classes have ended or

during a break time. Make sure that you don’t have the same ate or kuya to help and instruct you. Make sure also that you do this while he/she is on duty because you will do what they are supposed to do. Be the one to adjust to her/his time. Their help must only be on what to do. Dress up simply (white shirt and jeans) and collect the wastes from the different bins around the university. Bring them to the segregation and storage area behind the Medicine Building and spend three hours collecting and segregating the wastes from each other. If there are other procedures in doing this, follow what Ate/Kuya will instruct. Experience the life of a garbage collector for three hours and just do the collection of wastes and segregation without complain, enduring the heat, the embarrassment, the frustration, anger toward me or to anyone, the government or the society, annoyance with those you see, the kadiri feeling and maybe the boredom as well. After that, treat Ate/Kuya for a merienda and interview her/him on what her/his life is like as a janitor/janitress, how she/he makes end meet and how she/he sees her/his work. Document your activity by making a time lapse video of your experience and another 10 minute video with the highlights of the interview with Ate/Kuya. 4. Make a group reflection paper of your experience citing what insights you’ve gained regarding yourself, the society, the people who are doing the things you’ve done and what can you contribute in alleviating the lives of those people. Group reflection paper must be 5 pages. Consume the entire page of each page and follow the format carefully: 1” on all sides, 1.5 spacing, No title. Gather all your time-lapse and interview videos and submit them to your beadle for collation. Beadles please gather all the videos of each group and put them in one folder and label each folder as: Encyclical Name: Surnames of the members. The videos must be labelled as V1, V2, V3. Submit them to me via USB. 5. Grading Points: Volunteer Work in Waste segregation 80 points Reflection Paper: 20 points ______________________ Total: 100 points III. Submission of everything will on May 21, 2018, Monday until 5pm only. No late projects! IV.
