SCL Manifesto

Structured MS Office docs, PDFs Unstructured

Crowdsoucing Help you understand key areas e.g. e.g. experience of Performancce Management

I'm not a database person, but have a feel about what to do with the data

SCL can help you take advantage of this wave, as well as existing 6. best practice tools and techniques

Now, many only collaboration tools have this data (although in database!) Customers

Lifeblood of organisations is 1. information

Information about

Partners Organisational performance etc. Tools for non-techies make manipulating data & info an emerging possibility for all

SCL believes that this distinction is breaking down

Coillaboration tools from major vendors

But it must be managed!

Blogs, wikis, etc. 'Mashup' tools, which allow combination of structured & unstructured information Sometimes in tool Most often needs to be managed by people People change also needs to be managed - culture & attitudes Knowledge Mgmt & re-use

Tools are now emerging that non-technical people can harness to better share & consume 5. information

Originally, mainframes were the dominant computing platform

2. Historically

This was bad because it allowed users to do more things

Databases have also come a long way

Brings us to the present - i.e. the second generation of the Web

10% Technology

But how do you share & manage exploding amounts of information

4. You need it flowing as well as possible

Management was happy with this

Bill Gates popularised this term, I still feel it's valid

Out of control Bottom-up was seen as undesirable

Might say undesirable things

Using tools effectively

This was good because it allowed users to do more things

WWW is all about collaboration & textual info

Breakdown

In the past, it was top-down control

In terms of sharing information

This was bad because IT Dept controlled everything

Success of PC was driven by use of spreadsheets & later word processing software

Narrative

70% People

Waste of time

This was good because IT Dept controlled everything

Governance

Then harness, reuse & exploit it

20% Process

This can also lead to lower costs & greater busienss agility - not held back by infrastructure

Want the understanding to go from bottom to top Also need governance & oversight

Need to collect the data in the first place Data, Info & Knowledge

Needs to be accurate Capture & storage are not enough, you need to be able to find things

But still, there was something missing

3. Digital Nervous system

The way applications talk with one another has also come a long way Internally Information supply chain

With Partners With wider stakeholders
