Grade 6 Science 2008/2009. In semester 1 this year grade 6 students will learn about:     

Elements, the period table of the elements and their properties Forces that act on objects in everyday life Cells of living organisms and how to view them using a microscope Using keys to classify living organisms into groups The Earth, Moon and other planets in our solar system

In semester 2 this year grade 6 students will learn about:  Density of different solids and liquids  Energy transfer and the influence of heat energy transfer  Ecosystems, energy flow within ecosystems and adaptations of organisms allowing them to live there  The structure of the Earth and its resources

Grade 7 Science 2008/2009. In semester 1 this year grade 7 students will learn about:    

Elements, compounds, mixtures, alloys and reactions Electrical circuits and their everyday applications Cells, cell organelles and the processes of osmosis and diffusion in cells Earth’s atmosphere, eclipses and space bodies such as other planets, comets and asteroids

In semester 2 this year grade 7 students will learn about:  The effects of heating and cooling on solids, liquids and gases  The role of microflora on and in our body and the environment, and describe their beneficial or harmful effects  The human impact on natural ecosystems, and the possible long-term consequences of this impact  Ways to reduce human impact on natural ecosystems  Applications of Newton’s Fist Law of Motion  The events and processes in the rock cycle VALUES

Grade 8 Science 2008/2009. In semester 1 this year grade 8 students will learn about:    

Models of atoms, molecules and compounds Electricity in a circuit in terms of voltage, current and resistance The importance of mitosis and meiosis in living things The theory of plate tectonics to explain the dynamic nature of the lithosphere and the Earth’s internal structure

In semester 2 this year grade 8 students will learn about:    

Domestic and commercial uses of acids and bases The properties, uses and effects on humans of radiation in the Electromagnetic spectrum Causes of infectious and non-infectious diseases and how diseases can be prevented The different forms of fossils and the conditions under which they form

Grade 9 Science 2008/2009. In semester 1 this year grade 9 students will learn about:    

a range of compounds based on their chemical composition a model of the atom to describe radioactive particles using a model of the DNA molecule and a human karyotype to describe inheritance natural events and cycles that lead to extinctions and the evolution of new life forms

In semester 2 this year grade 9 students will learn about:  balanced chemical equations for a range of common reactions, using internationally recognised symbols  Newton’s Laws of Motion to solve problems involving force, mass acceleration and inertia  the theory of evolution by natural selection to explain the origin of new species  recent developments in our understanding of our Solar System and the Universe gained from our use of technologies
