SUPPORTS P 9,000.00 SALARY HIKE OF PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS (Senate Bill No. 2408)

Whereas, it has been six long years ( 2000-2006), that the salary of a Teacher I was pegged at Php 9,939.00. It was only in 2007 that the teachers were given a 10% increase in their basic pay raising the wage of a teacher I to Php10,933. But, with the poverty level officially set at Php10,000 in the National Capital Region, the said increase merely keeps the teacher within the poverty threshold. Whereas, Senate Bill No. 2408, “ AN ACT PROVIDING FOR SUPPORT AND COMPENSATION FOR EDUCATORS IN BASIC EDUCATION”, seeks to grant Php9,000 across-the-board salary increase to all public school teachers, locally-funded teachers, Philippine Science High School System Teaching and non-teaching personnel, and non-teaching personnel of the DepEd, excluding those occupying positions from salary grade 30, under the DepEd schedule of salaries, and /or Assistant Secretary upwards. The additional compensation provides a salary adjustment of Php3,000 every year for three (3) years or three (3) equal tranches over the years and shall be considered as part of the basic salary for the purpose of computing retirement pays and bonuses that the beneficiaries under this Act are entitled to. Likewise, additional supports like the augmentation of existing local allowances sourced from the Special Education Fund (SEF), annual medical check-up allowance of One Thousand Pesos (Php1,000), and annual Magna Carta bonus are authorized by the said Act. Whereas, the Senators who passed the bill on the seond reading were: Alan Peter Cayetano, Juan Ponce Enrile, Richard Gordon, Gringo Honasan, Pia Cayetano, Francis Escudero, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Loren Legarda, Mar Roxas, Rodolfo Biazon, Jinggoy Estrada, Francis Pangilinan, and Aquilino Pimentel. PESPA PRAYER Dear Lord, you have given us The great responsibility Of being in authority over people Help us always to act fairly and justly: But to justice help us always To add mercy and sympathy Help us to know when to enforce discipline And when to relax it. Help us to remember That people are important than thngs, And that men are always more important Than machines. Keep us from being abusing our authority Or exercising it with harshness or tyranny As a show of power. But keep us also from being afraid To exercise it at all. Help us to be good example to those under us Of the virtues of honesty, integrity, justice Loyalty, and self-discipline. Grant us your wisdom and guidance In all our actions and decisions So that they will be for the common good And help us never to forget, Lord, That even if we are in authority over people, All authority comes from you. Amen
