LOHRI 2007 CELEBRATIONS moods, resplendent decorations and flamboyant celebrations. The doors opened at 7:00pm and the curtains on the stage closed in preparation for the upcoming performances. The evening started with a variety of snacks and welcome opportunities to socialize, as this was the first major event of the year. No Punjabi celebration is complete without Bhangra and Gidha – two popular forms of folk dances. The stage performances included Bhangra by three separate groups and Gidha performed by an award-winning local group. Last year, the Gidha group won second-prize in the international Gidha competition, held in Chicago. Other highlights of the evening included a fusion group dance, songs by local artists and live Dhol performance by Dholi Jarnail Singh from New York. Stage curtains were once again closed, as dinner buffet was opened. Lights were dimmed and within moments, the glimmering dance floor was full as the DJ unleashed a thread of Bhangra music. The young and the

young-atheat were all enjoying this kinship with dance and music. Chintala, Neeharika Palivela, Vaishnavi Meda and Sai Krupali Ambaty. Then the audience was treated by two Annamayya kirtanas – “Govidaasrita” by Meena Moorthy and Geetha Keshav and “Govinda Govindayani koluvare” by Sai Pinnamaneni. The dance for a Pelli pata, “Yee desanninchi vaccharayya”, rendered by eight adorable kids clad in traditional wedding dresses, Alekhya Ankaraju, Uma Kocherlakota, Sreya Vemuri, Neeharika Katragadda, Utkarsh Sayini, Raeya Ponugoti, Harsha Vemuri and Abhiram Ankaraju, was an entertaining hit with the crowd. A song on Lord Rama by Harsha Vemuri and Vaibhav Vavilala provided a religious and festive touch to the program. GITA president, Mr. Balaraju Chinthala, then gave a speech on this occasion where he emphasized the role of festivals, traditions and customs in our culture and further stressed on the beautiful Sankranthi

Dr. Harinath Policherla is the new International coordinator and Dr. Saidulu Reddy and Mr. Narotham Reddy are overseas coordinators. LOHRI 2007 CELEBRATIONS moods, resplendent decorations and flamboyant celebrations. The doors opened at 7:00pm and the curtains on the stage closed in preparation for the upcoming performances. The evening started with a variety of snacks and welcome opportunities to socialize, as this was the first major event of the year. No Punjabi celebration is complete without Bhangra and Gidha – two popular forms of folk dances. The stage performances included Bhangra by three separate groups and Gidha performed by an award-winning local group. Last year, the Gidha group won second-prize in the international Gidha competition, held in Chicago. Other highlights of the evening included a fusion group dance, songs by local artists and live Dhol performance by Dholi Jarnail Singh from New York. Stage curtains were once again closed, as dinner buffet was opened. Lights were dimmed and within moments, the glimmering dance floor was full as the DJ unleashed a thread of Bhangra music. young-atheat were all enjoying this kinship with dance and music. Chintala, Neeharika Palivela, Vaishnavi Meda and Sai Krupali Ambaty. Then the audience was treated by two Annamayya kirtanas – “Govidaasrita” by Meena Moorthy and Geetha Keshav and “Govinda Govindayani koluvare” by Sai Pinnamaneni. The dance for a Pelli pata, “Yee desanninchi vaccharayya”, rendered by eight adorable kids clad in traditional wedding dresses, Alekhya Ankaraju, Uma Kocherlakota, Sreya Vemuri, Neeharika Katragadda, Utkarsh Sayini, Raeya Ponugoti, Harsha Vemuri and Abhiram Ankaraju, was an entertaining hit with the crowd. A song on Lord Rama by Harsha Vemuri and Vaibhav Vavilala provided a religious and festive touch to the program. This mythological tug-of-war episode where ‘devatalu’ and ‘rakshasulu’ churn the ocean of milk, was impeccably portrayed by fourteen kids, Saketh Boyapalli, Srinith Challa, Nishanth Chinnanandi, Abhinay Davarakonda, Anoop Jasti, Harshita Kondeti, Laasya Maamidipalli, Srujan Mupparapu, Sarita Pantula, Divyesh Sunderraj, Ashwin Sunderraj, Shivani Suravarjjala, Shravan Suravarjjala and Akhil Vadlamudi. The audience were then treated with dances from three movies by Adarsh Tamma, Vasuma Yarlagadda, Nikitha Lattupally, Heera Vemaganti and Sushuma Yarlagadda. This was followed by “Naarayaneeyam slokas” that were devotionally and lucidly rendered by Srikar Vedala thoroughly impressed the audience. The last two items provided a befitting closure to the event and stole audience’s hearts and minds. The song, “Vacchindoy sankranthi”, by Mrs. Lalitha Ankaraju,
AMERICAN TELUGU ASSOCIATION (ATA) CONTINUED FROM P:6 BOARD MEETING Sudhakar Perikari, Mr. Syama Reddy, Mr. Rajeshwar Reddy, Mr. Balaraju Chinthala, Mr. Damoder Veera Reddy, Mr. Ravindhar Reddy, Dr. Chitten Raju Vanguri, Mr. Sanjeeva Reddy, Mrs. Rohini Bokka and Mrs. Jhansi Reddy Hanumandala. Dr. Harinath Policherla is the new International coordinator and Dr. Saidulu Reddy and Mr. Narotham Reddy are overseas coordinators. Dr. Chandra Reddy recognized Dr. Mohan Mallam, former president, for his services to ATA and presented him a plaque. All other Standing committees and regional coordinators were also appointed during this meeting. Dr. Siva Prasad Kumpatla was appointed as the Chief Editor for America Bharati, the magazine of ATA. Mr. Suresh Jilla was appointed as the Chairperson for

The 10th ATA convention will be held in New York during July 3-5, 2008 and the organizers for this event are: Mr. Balaram Pammi (Convener), Mr. Stanley Reddy (Co-Convener), Dr. Vijay Reddy (National Coordinator) and Mr. Arjun Dyapa (Coordinator).
