LOHRI 2007 CELEBRATIONS moods, resplendent decorations and flamboyant celebrations. The doors opened at 7:00pm and the curtains on the stage closed in preparation for the upcoming performances. The evening started with a variety of snacks and welcome opportunities to socialize, as this was the first major event of the year. No Punjabi celebration is complete without Bhangra and Gidha – two popular forms of folk dances. The stage performances included Bhangra by three separate groups and Gidha performed by an award-winning local group. Last year, the Gidha group won second-prize in the international Gidha competition, held in Chicago. Other highlights of the evening included a fusion group dance, songs by local artists and live Dhol performance by Dholi Jarnail Singh from New York. Stage curtains were once again closed, as dinner buffet was opened. Lights were dimmed and within moments, the glimmering dance floor was full as the DJ unleashed a thread of Bhangra music. The young and the

Then the audience was treated by two Annamayya kirtanas – “Govidaasrita” by Meena Moorthy and Geetha Keshav and “Govinda Govindayani koluvare” by Sai Pinnamaneni. The dance for a Pelli pata, “Yee desanninchi vaccharayya”, rendered by eight adorable kids clad in traditional wedding dresses, Alekhya Ankaraju, Uma Kocherlakota, Sreya Vemuri, Neeharika Katragadda, Utkarsh Sayini, Raeya Ponugoti, Harsha Vemuri and Abhiram Ankaraju, was an entertaining hit with the crowd. A song on Lord Rama by Harsha Vemuri and Vaibhav Vavilala provided a religious and festive touch to the program. GITA president, Mr. Balaraju Chinthala, then gave a speech on this occasion where he emphasized the role of festivals, traditions and customs in our culture and further stressed on the beautiful Sankranthi

moments and memories we all had in our childhood. Then came one of the highlights of the evening, the play “Ksheera saagara madhanam”, beautifully presented by Mr. Mahesh Suravarjjala. This mythological tug-of-war episode where ‘devatalu’ and ‘rakshasulu’ churn the ocean of milk, was impeccably portrayed by fourteen kids, Saketh Boyapalli, Srinith Challa, Nishanth Chinnanandi, Abhinay Davarakonda, Anoop Jasti, Harshita Kondeti, Laasya Maamidipalli, Srujan Mupparapu, Sarita Pantula, Divyesh Sunderraj, Ashwin Sunderraj, Shivani Suravarjjala, Shravan Suravarjjala and Akhil Vadlamudi. The audience were then treated with dances from three movies by Adarsh Tamma, Vasuma Yarlagadda, Nikitha Lattupally, Heera Vemaganti and Sushuma Yarlagadda. This was followed by “Naarayaneeyam slokas” that were devotionally and lucidly rendered by Srikar Vedala thoroughly impressed the audience. The last two items provided a befitting closure to

the event and stole audience’s hearts and minds. The song, “Vacchindoy sankranthi”, by Mrs. Lalitha Ankaraju, Dr. Mantipragada Krishna and Sri Mohan Devaraju, brought forward “Sankranthi jnaapakaalu”. Then, the song and dance by Raja Reddy and Sathvik Madduri for “Maharajarajasri” song from the movie Sutradharulu with the accompanying ‘Gangireddu aata’ by Sandeep Pamireddy and Ravikanth stood as another highlight for the program. The Gangireddu later visited the audience and greeted them. Kids of all ages thoroughly enjoyed this Sankranthi visitor among them. On this occasion, Dr. Chandra Reddy Gavva, the new President of American Telugu Association (ATA), spoke of GITA’s contribution to Telugu people in Indiana and then introduced the new office bearers of ATA who hail from Indiana. The program concluded by presenting trophies to sponsors/ donors, cultural program participants and by appreciation of GITA committee members.

THE ROGER E. HERNANDEZ COLUMN By Roger E. Hernandez Drop in Interethnic Marriage: Cheer or Jeer? Once upon a time, there was trouble if you married outside of your ethnic group. It wasn’t until 1967 that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled anti-miscegenation laws unconstitutional, and not everybody loved Lucy and Ricky. Now, we are told, we might be headed for trouble because people are marrying inside their ethnic group. The issue was raised by academics Zhenchao Qian and Daniel Lichter in the February issue of American Sociological Review. Their paper claims that the number of U.S.-born Hispanic men who

www.SAsiaOne.com

married non-Hispanic white women declined from 35.3 percent in 1990 to 31.9 percent in 2000. And that the number of native-born AsianAmerican men in intermarriages with white women declined too in the 1990s, from 50.2 percent to 45.8 percent. In contrast, Census figures say that between 1970 and 1990, intermarriage figures increased. Sociologists believe ethnic intermarriage is one of the most important hallmarks of assimilation into the larger society. Does this decline mean that Hispanics and Asians are becoming more isolated? Other studies on intermarriage show there’s no need to fret. One paper published in June 2005 in the

journal Population Bulletin said only 5 percent of Hispanics with less than a high-school education married outside the group, compared with 28 percent of Hispanic men and 35 percent of Hispanic women with a college degree. Still another study, sponsored by the Russell Sage Foundation in 2003, said 57 percent of third-generation Hispanics married non-Hispanics. So there you have it. The more educated you are and the longer your family has lived here, the more likely you are to mix it up with someone from a different background. Perhaps surprisingly, says the Qian and Lichter study, the number of blacks who married whites went from 8.3 percent to 14.9 percent in the 1990s. The rate is substantially lower than for Hispanics and Asians, but it is growing, not declining like it is for the other “minorities.” This draws attention to the central difference among the groups lumped together as “minorities.” The old taboos against race mixing were aimed at African-Americans much more than at Asians or Hispanics

When it comes to Asian-white marriages, today almost nobody thinks twice about the mixed ethnicity of actor Keanu Reeves or “Today” show anchor Ann Curry. When it comes to Hispanics, it’s not even accurate to speak of “interracial” marriages, since Hispanics may be of any race. But when it comes to AfricanAmericans, the line was drawn so sharply -- blacks here, whites there, and don’t you dare cross -- that it is still visible. This accounts for the much lower intermarriage rate for blacks. Yet the line is becoming blurred, which accounts for the increase in black-white marriages. Ricky was allowed to love Lucy as early as 1951. But it took until 1968 for the first interracial kiss -- never mind marriage -- on a U.S. television series, when Lt. Uhura and Capt. Kirk touched lips on “Star Trek.” Their smooch was involuntary, forced by the telekinetic powers of the nasty leaders of the planet Platonius. LIGHTER MOMENT Foreign Language A mother mouse and a baby mouse are walking along, when all of a sudden, a cat attacks them. The mother mouse goes, “BARK!” and the cat runs away. “See?” says the mother mouse to her baby. “Now do you see why it’s important to learn a foreign language?”

On The Run From A Bear Two campers are walking through the woods when a huge brown bear suddenly appears in the clearing about 50 feet in front of them. The bear sees the campers and begins to head toward them. The first guys drops his backpack, digs out a pair of sneakers, and frantically begins to put them on. The second guys says, “What are you doing? Sneakers won’t help you outrun that bear.” “I don’t need to outrun the bear,” the first guy says. “I just need to out run you.”
