Santan Jr. High Athletic Handbook

2010-2011 Sports Season

Dear Athletes and Parents, Welcome to the Santan Junior High School athletic program. The Athletic Director and coaching staff have created a handbook for athletes so that they would understand exactly what is expected of them as they embark on what promises to be an exciting year of athletics at Santan and in the East Valley Conference. Contained in the handbook are sections detailing the following: • Behavioral expectations • Academic eligibility • Practice and Games • Injuries • Uniforms • Sportsmanship • Due process for athletes • Parent communication • Athletic Trips • Tobacco, Alcohol, and Controlled Substance Policies All athletes are required to make a commitment to the East Valley Conference and Santan in which they will agree to prioritize all Santan contests before any club or independent sport. All of us in the athletic department feel a sincere responsibility in maintaining a clear and open line of communication with parents and athletes. The materials contained in the handbook will hopefully provide you with a better understanding of the policies and procedures under which we operate. If you have any specific questions, please speak to individual sport coaches or contact the athletic department at (480) 883-4610. Your signature is required below to indicate that you have read the material and have a clear understanding of what is expected as a Santan athlete. Please return this signed letter to your coach upon completion. Sincerely, David Loutzenheiser Assistant Principal / Athletic Director [email protected]

Rules and Regulations for Student Participation 1. Expectations and Responsibilities Interscholastic athletic activities are a voluntary program. Students are not obligated to participate and participation is not required. Participation in athletic activities is a privilege that entails responsibility. Students participating in Santan athletics are expected to conform to the standards of behaviors established by the school and district. The behaviors include, but are not limited to, the following: behavior, academics, appearance, and sportsmanship. In keeping with these expectations, any student who is suspended on campus is ineligible to practice for the duration of their suspension. Students that receive In-School Suspension are ineligible to participate in the next game immediately following their suspension. Repeated In-School Suspension will results in removal from the team. Students who receive Off-Campus Suspension, for any reason, will be removed from their sports team. 2. Academic Eligibility All student athletes must pass all classes. Students receiving a failing grade in any class will not be allowed to participate in athletics. Santan eligibility is determined on a weekly basis. Every Friday, coaches will receive a printout from STI for any athlete that has a F in any class. The student is not eligible to participate in games until the grade has been brought up to at least a D. Students who fail a class at semester will not be eligible for the following quarter. 3. Practice and Games Practice is an integral part of skill development and player improvement. Team practices are scheduled based on team requirements and school facilities needs. Teams are scheduled to practice on a Monday through Friday basis and will compete in the EVC tournaments. Coaches are expected to provide players with a practice schedule to include start and end times for each practice. EVC tournaments for some sports (cross country, wrestling, or track) may be held on a Saturday following the end of the regular season. Players are expected to be punctual in reporting to practice. Practices may be held before or after school, at the coaches’ discretion. In case of a necessary absence from practice, players should notify the coach immediately. Additionally, players are expected to secure transportation to practice before school or from practice after school. As practice ends at 5:30pm, it is expected

that players be picked up no later than 5:45pm. Excessive violation of this rule may result in a player being dismissed from a team. To participate in extra-curricular activities (i.e. practice or competition), the student is required to attend ALL of his or her classes. The only exception allowed will be circumstances beyond the control of the student. Please have your parent notify the coach of any circumstances that may require special consideration. 4. Injuries Report all injuries to the coach immediately – no matter how slight they may appear to be. Each coach is provided a medical kit for their team’s use during practice and games. The coach will refer you to the school nurse or athletic trainer as necessary. An athletic trainer will be on site periodically, throughout the sports season. Accidents or injuries must be reported to the coach within 48 hours of occurrence. If the injury is not reported to the coach at the time of the accident, it may impact payment of medical bills. In some cases, the insurance company will refuse to pay for injuries that were not reported within a specified time frame. Parents will be notified immediately of serious injury. If a parent cannot be reached, an administrator or designee will accompany the student to the hospital identified by the parents on the emergency information sheet. 5. Uniforms School uniforms are to be worn ONLY on game days. Athletes will be held responsible for all athletic equipment issued to them. The Athletic Director recognizes normal wear and tear; however, students will be held accountable for unusual abuse or loss of equipment. All athletic equipment must be turned in immediately at the end of the season or, if the athlete leaves prior to the end of the season, when the athlete ceases to be a member of the team. Failure to turn in uniforms and equipment will make the athlete ineligible to compete on any further teams at the school. 6. Sportsmanship One of the overarching goals for team sports participation is the development of good sportsmanship ideals and principles. In order to assist coaches and athletes in this process, the Chandler Unified School District participates in the

Pursuing Victory with Honors program. This program works to impart key components of ethical and moral behavior through example, dialogue and reinforcement of appropriate behavior. For further information regarding the Pursuing Victory with Honor Program, you are encouraged to visit www.charactercounts.org. 7. Due Process Students found to be in violation of athletic rules as outlined in Chandler Unified School District Rules, are subject to disciplinary action as prescribed. If you feel that the decision through the Athletic Director is inappropriate, the Athletic Director will schedule a meeting with appropriate parties. Any appeal beyond this level will be considered in accordance with the Chandler Unified School District Appeal Process. 8. Parent Communication The administration, faculty and coaches of Santan understand the importance of parental interest, involvement and communication. One of our major goals is to strive for open communication and positive interaction between parents and coaches. Students are items: • • • •

Parents are encouraged to contact the Athletic Director if there are any questions with regards to policies and procedures. If a parent has a question, concern or complaint, they are encouraged to discuss this with the coach at an appropriate time. During a game or match is not an appropriate time to contact the coach. If the problem is not resolved, the parent should then contact the school Athletic Director’s office. 9. Athletic Trips All transportation to and from activities and athletic events is restricted to transportation sanctioned by the school district. No exceptions of this policy will be made without previous arrangement through the school’s Athletic Director’s office or the Principal. Parents may only pick up their individual child from an athletic event, unless arrangements have been made ahead of time with the

coach and the athletic director. Parents must sign their athletes out with the coach prior to transporting their athlete home. Behavior on the bus during the trip and the host school should be such that it reflects positively on Santan Jr. High and the Chandler Unified School District. Theft of items (e.g. towels, athletic equipment) from a host school is inexcusable and is grounds for immediate dismissal from the team. Athletes, spirit squads and spectators should maintain a quiet and modest attitude at host schools. 10. Tobacco Policy Students are not permitted to use or be in possession of tobacco in any form on or off school grounds. Students will be removed from a sports team in accordance with Santan Jr. High Campus Athletic Policies. 11. Alcohol and Controlled Substance Policy Students participating in athletic activities who are found to be consuming or in possession of alcoholic beverages and/or in possession of drugs or drug paraphernalia (i.e. cigarette wrapping paper, roach clips, pipes) shall be removed from a sports team in accordance with Santan Jr. High Campus Athletic Policies. 12.
