Simple pleasures ... beautiful places The Santa Fe introduces a new age of elegance in sport-utility vehicles. Of course it’s rugged enough to go off-road. But it’s also perfect for long journeys to the loveliest of destinations.

Santa Fe has it all The big wheels and high ground clearance are classic design elements of a sport-utility vehicle. Appearances can be misleading, though, because Santa Fe is more than that. It represents three Hyundais in one. Such is the model’s versatility that it combines a reassuring off-road capability with the comfort and driveability of a large passenger car and the practicality of a people-carrier for up to seven people. Truly, this is a car for all reasons. And the appeal of Santa Fe goes beyond simple good sense. The model’s most notable advantage is evident from every angle: up to the minute styling that gives it an elegant look at rest and on the open road.

Detail makes the difference The Santa Fe looks elegant from every angle. This eye-catching appearance is more than the sum of its parts, each of which was designed to emphasise the vehicle’s membership of the Hyundai family. The graceful curves and character lines of the side profile are complemented by horizontal light clusters at the front and rear, purposeful twin exhaust pipes and smart, body-coloured bumpers. The overall effect was to create a car that will be admired everywhere.

World class in every way Urban environments and busy schedules can be demanding on cars – and on their owners. That was the challenge for Santa Fe’s engineers and designers. What does a car – and owner – require to be as comfortable in the big city as much as in the country? Their solutions speak for themselves. Santa Fe looks fresh and modern inside and out. Top quality goes without saying. Whether you need the five- or seven-seater version, there are masses of space inside. It has all the convenience and safety features one would expect of a Hyundai. And the high seating positions provide above-it-all visibility for added safety and reassurance. In short, Santa Fe provides all the right answers.

Santa Fe steps out in style

Welcome to the world of the Santa Fe The appearance is elegant and luxurious. The sensation is one of comfort and pampering. The result is a model that can slip effortlessly into environments in which only the best is good enough. Call it the ‘film star factor’. Santa Fe’s modern interior has duo-tone trim complemented by stylish embellishments in wood and satin metal. There is a comprehensive array of safety and comfort features, including an integrated audio system. And the seats, trimmed in standard cloth or in optional leather, provide accommodation for up to seven people.

Audio on demand A range of audio systems is available, each one neatly integrated into the centre of the dashboard, in order to suit a wide variety of preferences. What they have in common are impressive technical performances. The one illustrated above combines a radio and cassette player with a compact disc player and in-dash changer, an MP3 player, an external amplifier and seven speakers. You’ll love the results!

Cool blue Hyundai’s corporate colour was adopted to illuminate the Santa Fe’s elegant interior at night. The designers reviewed the whole colour spectrum before selecting blue for the instrument backlighting. It’s easy on the eye and clear to read in the dark.

The best of both worlds The optional automatic transmission can operate in a fully automatic mode, or, at the flick of the shift lever, more like a manual. The combination is ideal for stop-start urban conditions as well as for more spirited driving when the traffic will allow it.

Your journey of discovery begins here You know you are in for a treat the moment you slide into one of the Santa Fe’s seats. For a start, the high seating positions provide superb visibility all round. There is a proliferation of safety, comfort and convenience features. And the mechanical refinement and responsive handling tell you this is a Santa Fe like no other.

Keeping cool ... There’s nothing like a current of fresh air in temperate weather conditions. For those occasions, the Santa Fe has an electrically powered sun roof that can slide and tilt at the touch of a switch. It’s an ideal accessory for warm spring days and balmy summer evenings. Cosseted by the comfort and safety of your Santa Fe, you can smell the perfumes and listen to the sounds of nature.

... Whatever the weather In more extreme weather conditions – hot, cold or humid – occupants will appreciate the fact that the Santa Fe is equipped with dual-zone air conditioning. The system automatically maintains whatever temperature and ventilation you select. You’ll wonder how you managed in the past without it.

Fully adjustable steering wheel ... For maximum driving pleasure, the steering wheel features adjustments to alter its angle and distance in relation to the driver. The steering wheel itself is available with leather trim. Naturally, power assistance for the steering is standard.

... and 10-way Power Seat Hyundai recognises that owners come in all shapes and sizes – and have different preferences for seating comfort. The electrically operated motors incorporated into the Santa Fe’s front seats cater for them all. In addition to slide and recline, the seats have separate adjusters for height and another to control the tension of the lumbar support.

An eye for detail The overall elegance of the Santa Fe stands out because the designers got all the small things right as well. That doesn’t happen by chance. Take something as mundane as an interior door handle. It looks and works well only because the designers took care to get its location, shape, material and function right.

Space station This is what happens when the second of seats are folded down. It establishes an enormous, flat area that is free from protrusions and has a low loading sill. This sort of space can accommodate the occasional outsize domestic load – think of all the delivery charges that could be saved!

Santa Fe provides sanctuary in the big city The view from the driver’s seat is reassuring in unknown environments. Don’t park! One way! No entry! Dead end! On those occasions, the Santa Fe’s well crafted interior is a refuge of sanity. Observe the use of top-quality materials and the way the different parts of the interior fit beautifully together. Note the extensive range of standard equipment. Survey the scene around you from the elevated seating position. Santa Fe helps you to cope with the stress of modern life. Flexible seating for all occasions The accommodation flexibility of the seven-seat version is truly astonishing because the individual seat positions can be adjusted to suit the needs of the moment. Some examples include a conventional five-seater (3rd row folded), a staggered four-seater (2nd row partly folded), a two seater with lots of luggage space (2nd and 3rd row fully flat) and a couple of temporary beds (front fully flat). Just imagine how much baggage and holiday gear can fit into the space that’s still left!

Outer purpose and inner strength

The future has arrived Yes, it’s clearly a Santa Fe like the one you have grown to love over the years. Today’s look and the personality, though, have moved the model into a new era. The characteristic curving waistline and side cladding, the dual exhausts, the horizontal rear light clusters and the body-coloured bumpers suggest refinement and luxury. That’s entirely appropriate, because Santa Fe’s emphasis is on more car-like comfort and driveability.

2.7 litre petrol The all-aluminium alloy V6 petrol engine features a variable intake system and variable valve timing for economy with power. With a displacement of 2.7 litres, it produces power of 138 kW(188 ps) at 6,000 rpm and torque of 248 N.m(25.3 kg.m) at 4,000 rpm. The transmission choice is a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.

2.2 litre turbodiesel For the economy and pulling power of diesel, there’s a 2.2 litre four-cylinder with the latest injection technology and a variable geometry turbocharger. It is good for 110 kW(150 ps) at 4,000 rpm and amazing torque of 335 N.m(34.2 kg.m) between 1,800 rpm and 2,500 rpm. Manual or automatic transmissions, each with five speeds, are available.

Getting a grip Full time four-wheel-drive automatically distributes engine torque between the front and rear wheels. When conditions are more slippery, drive to the front and rear can be locked 50/50 at the press of a button.

Slippery Situations

Smooth and easy The suspension was re-thought to produce a more controlled and comfortable ride, the effect of which is immediately apparent on the road. A multi-link layout at the rear replaces the double wishbone system of the previous model. The result is a decrease in noise, vibration and harshness and improved stability. At the front, the layout of the well-proven MacPherson strut-type suspension was re-engineered for greater comfort and stability.

Slippery Situations or 4WD Lock

Where safety comes as standard The weather is fine and time is available. The well maintained roads are largely free of traffic. The way ahead dips and curves before you. It is an opportunity to sample the performance and driving dynamics of the Santa Fe. It is also a moment to appreciate the range of built-in active and passive safety features looking after you. They extend from structural integrity to multiple air bags, from excellent road holding and handling to powerful brakes. Enjoy the moment.

Sophisticated safety systems People who travel in the Santa Fe will be remarkably well protected in an accident. An array of air bags (above) is instantly deployed in the event of a severe crash in order to cushion heads and thoraxes. The curtain air bags that protect heads in a side impact extend to the third row of seats. An active head rest (right) that moves to prevent whiplash is available as an option on each front seat.

When strength makes sense Steering stability for safety The electronic stability programme, or ESP, automatically compensates for any steering mistakes by the driver. It does so by instantly applying individual brakes as required after monitoring front and rear wheel speeds, deceleration, yaw moment, the angle of the steering wheel and accelerator position.

Brake-fast The utterly dependable stopping performance, whatever the weather conditions, is attributable to disc brakes on all four wheels. Those at the front are ventilated (right) for better cooling under harsh treatment. The brakes have an electronic anti-locking system to ensure the vehicle stops in a straight line.

The toughness of a car’s construction is critical. When it is too late for active safety features like brakes and steering to have any effect, occupant protection is down to the vehicle’s structural integrity – and the multiple air bags. Hyundai engineers design each model on advanced computers that can predict how it will perform in an accident before one is built. Even so, they then crash test scores of prototypes in laboratories before authorising production. It is your seal of safety.

Santa Fe enters a new era The graceful lines identify the Santa Fe as much more than another sport-utility vehicle. And so it is. The refinement, comfort and handling are like those of a modern car.

More Santa Fe Twin exhausts

Outside mirror

The Santa Fe’s dual exhaust pipes are there not just to enhance the look of the rear end – which they do. Their real purpose is to cope with the extra output of each of the engine options and to reduce the noise levels emanating from the exhausts.

Each of the two outside door mirrors is electrically powered. They also have complete folding facilities for when space is tight.

Power windows There’s electrically powered window lifters for all four side windows are available on most models.

Front styling The frontal treatment epitomises the character of the car, which combines an assertive look with a graceful air. The twin character lines on the bonnet sweep down to the large grille, which features Hyundai’s familiar twin horizontal bars and its reassuring logo. The body-coloured bumpers are complemented by wide headlight clusters, separate low-mounted fog lights and a skid plate that reaches up to the grille.

Foldable aerial The micro radio aerial built into the rear of the roof section has a mechanism that allows it to be folded flat.

Hidden washer jets Hyundai engineers have thought of everything. The flowing frontal treatment is maintained by locating the highpressure triple nozzle washer sprays below the bonnet line.

Door handle Chrome-plating on each of the side door handles serves to emphasise the upscale nature of the Santa Fe.

Rear lamp Each of the light clusters at the rear has a one-piece appearance that extends into the hatchback door at the back.

Roof rack The smart, integrated roof rack bars, complete with a moveable cross member, are attractive as well as practical.

Hatchback handle The handle that opens the rear hatchback door has a chrome insert that echoes the finishes of the side doors.

Rear wiper Improved rear visibility – and therefore greater safety – is provided by the rear wiper/washer system, which is standard fitment on all models.

16 inch alloy wheel The standard 235/70 R16 aluminium alloy wheels have a unique five-spoke design that manages to look modern and stylish.

Rear spoiler The roof spoiler at the rear features a built-in highmounted stop light warning for additional safety.

17 inch alloy wheel The optional 235/65 R17 aluminium alloy wheels have a broad and square-shouldered five-spoke design to give a simple and firm appearance.

Door scuff The bright metal scuff plate at the bottom of each door frame is another reminder of Santa Fe’s high style.

Sunvisor The sun visor is equipped with an illuminated vanity mirror and a sliding extension that helps to eliminate glare.

Audio controls Supplementary finger tip controls for the audio system are on the steering wheel centre section. They are an attractive safety option.

Cup holders Positioned exactly where the driver and front passenger most need them, these convenience features reflect Hyundai attention to every quality detail.

Door pocket The pocket built into each front door trim is big enough to accommodate plenty of maps, books and other documents.

M465 audio This is the Santa Fe’s premium sound option, with radio, cassette, in-dash CD changer, MP3 player, 7-speakers and external amplifier.

Centre console The console between the front seats has dual functions as a storage tray and an arm rest.

Dashboard tray In the centre of the upper part of the dashboard, there’s a lidded tray that can hold a variety of oddments.

M455 audio Radio, cassette, CD player and MP3 player of M455 produce good quality listening. Parts of 6-speaker system with internal amplifier.

Cool box A cool box is located in the lower part of the central front console. It’s great boon for picnic snacks and drinks.

Keyless entry The fob for the ignition key is an electronic sender that can open and lock the doors from a distance.

M445 audio The entry level audio system features a radio and CD player. Parts of 6-speaker system with internal amplifier.

Air conditioning The dual zone air conditioning system is fully automated and maintains constant temperatures and directional flows, including to those seated in the rear.

Overhead console The roof-mounted overhead console comprises interior lights and a drop-down cubby hole that can be used to store a pair of sun glasses.

Second console The second row of seats has a central arm rest that doubles as a pair of cup holders.

Rear ventilation Passengers in the rear are not forgotten when it comes to heating and ventilation. They have their own air outlets.

Conversation mirror The drop-down ‘conversation mirror’ is useful in a vehicle as big as the Santa Fe. The convex image captures all occupants.

Luggage screen A flexible screen between the rearmost seats and the hatchback door hides everything in the boot from prying eyes.

Rear

Power outlets Power outlets for recharging electronic gadgets are fitted at the front and the rear.

Interior lighting With three rows of seats, it’s important the passengers in the back have access to overhead illumination when they need it.

Cargo net A retaining net for the floor is practically an essential in a vehicle with a cargo area as large as Santa Fe’s.

Mirror with compass The electro chromatic interior mirror automatically dims to reduce driver effort and eye strain. It also features a digital compass for improved directional recognition.

Boot bins Deep binnacles with lids are built into the sides of the boot area. They’re handy to stop loose items rolling about the luggage area.

Extra storage The cargo area below the hinged rear floor has a preformed tray that provides secure space for other motoring necessities. The section is even bigger in the fiveseater version.
