“Handy Information – Policies and Procedures for safe hand-washing.” Target audience – Nutritional services employees of Long Island Medical Center. Objective – Long Island Medical Center employees will demonstrate knowledge of hand washing policies through verbal quiz with 100% accuracy Time allotted – 15 minutes Pre-assessment – Employees will be asked to answer a multiple choice question by show of hands on the proper amount of time required to wash hands. Employees will be asked to close their eyes so that their answers are solely based upon their own knowledge and not based upon who else has their hands raised. Content and Sequence 1.) Pre-assessment quiz 2.) Explanation of the policy and procedure – Policy – When hands should be washed a.) In-between glove changes b.) After using the restroom c.) After sneezing, coughing, or touching any part of the face, hair, or body d.) Before and after handling raw meat e.) After eating and smoking f.) After touching anything that might contaminate hands, such as dirty dishes, money, and chemicals and before touching ready-to-eat food.

Procedure - Proper hand washing method: Wash for at least 15 seconds a.) Wet hands with water b.) Apply 3-5 ml of liquid soap from the soap dispenser to the palm of hands c.) Form a full lather by rubbing hands, palm to palm with interlacing the fingers d.) Rotational rubbing, backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa e.) Clean under fingernails f.) Clean wrists g.) Rinse hands with water with hands pointing downward h.) Dry hands thoroughly with a single use paper towel

3.) Initiation of learning activity 4.) Evaluation 5.) Distribution of materials Learning activity – Glo-germ demonstration. Volunteer will coat their hands with glo-germ product and wash their hands. A UV light will be shown on their hands after the test to show how bacteria can stay on the hands if they are washed improperly. Materials – A hand out with information on the hand washing policy / procedure will be provided to those who would like it. Evaluation – Employees will be asked once again to answer a multiple choice question regarding the required time to wash hands to ensure that all employees have retained the information from the inservice.
