For Immediate Release www.Chargers.com Monday, Sept. 21, 2009 (858) 874-4500 The San Diego Chargers will conclude a two-game homestand when they host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Qualcomm Stadium. Kickoff is 1:15 p.m. PDT. The Dolphins took the NFL by storm a year ago winning the AFC East with an 11-5 record just a year after going 115 and finishing last in their division. The Chargers will look to improve to 2-1 after a Week 2 31-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Miami must make the cross-country trek to San Diego after hosting Indianapolis on Monday Night Football at Landshark Stadium.
Series History The Chargers and Dolphins will meet for the second year in a row and the sixth time this decade as the Chargers look to put an end to a seven-game losing streak in the series. The Chargers’ last win over Miami took place 15 seasons ago in 1994, a memorable 22-21 win in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. The teams have met four times in postseason play, splitting the contests. The all-time series ledger shows Miami with a slight 14-12 advantage, however the Chargers are 8-6 in games played in San Diego. The series dates back to 1966.

Alex Spanos inducted into Cal Poly Hall of Fame Recently, Chargers owner Alex Spanos was inducted into the Cal Poly-San Luis Obsipo Athletics Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place during the weekend of Sept. 12 around the Mustangs’ football home opener against Sacramento State. Spanos studied aerospace engineering at Cal Poly from 1941-42 before leaving school to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps. While at student at Cal Poly, Spanos competed on the school’s swimming and diving teams, while also serving as a drum major in the Mustang Marching Band. Also inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame was Ultimate Fighting superstar Chuck Liddell, who is friends with several Chargers and an avid supporter of the team.
Two-game homestands good to the Chargers Sunday’s Chargers-Dolphins game will be the second game of a two-game Chargers homestand. Since 2004, the Chargers have swept seven of their eight two-game homestands. The Bolts split their other two-game stand in 2005.
Home Whites This Sunday against Miami, the Chargers will wear their road white jerseys and Navy blue pants. The Chargers routinely do so for September home games when temperatures in San Diego are typically at their highest. The Dolphins will be wearing their home dark-colored jerseys and relegated to the north, sunny sideline at Qualcomm Stadium.
Aztec Pride The Chargers opened the 2009 season with three San Diego State University alums on the active roster Antwan Applewhite, Brandyn Dombrowski and Kassim Osgood. It is the most former Aztecs the Chargers have had on their roster to open a season since 1974, when four were on the team. That ’74 squad featured SDSU alums Bobby Howard, Jeff Staggs, Jesse Freitas and Don Horn.
Tough Stretch The Chargers are in the middle of three straight games against teams that were in the playoffs a year ago, including both participants in the AFC Championship Game, the Ravens’ game last Sunday and the Steelers’ game next week in Pittsburgh (Oct. 4). The Chargers, who play the NFL’s 17th toughest schedule (based on 2008 W-L records), face only three ’08 playoff teams (New York Giants, Philadelphia and Tennessee) after this stretch. Cumulatively, the Chargers’ 16 opponents in 2008 were 123-131-2 (.484)
Rivers’ career day On Monday, Aug. 24, quarterback Philip Rivers signed a six-year contract extension that will run thru the 2015 season. The Bolts’ starting quarterback since 2006, Rivers has led the team to three straight playoff seasons. Last Sunday against Baltimore, Rivers threw for a career-high 436 yards, including a career-long 81-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles. Rivers’ career record as a starter now stands at 37-19 (.661), including playoffs. His record at Qualcomm Stadium is even more impressive, 22-6 for a .786 winning percentage. He also holds the team’s record for career passer rating (92.5).
Sproles does it again Two games, two 200-yard outgings for running back Darren Sproles. Six days after racking up 246 yards against Oakland in the season opener, Sproles tallied 278 on Sunday against the Ravens - 26 rushing, 124 receiving and 128 on kickoff returns. It was the ninth-best all-purpose game in team history and the ninth 200-yard game of Sproles’ career.
My time has come One of the most exciting stories to follow this season will be that of defensive end Ogemdi Nwagbuo (OH-gem-dee NEW-wahboe). His parents were both born in Nigeria and even though Ogemdi was born in San Diego, he was given a Nigerian name, which translated to English means “my time will come.” Nwagbuo is the family’s surname. Nwagbuo, who registered his first-career sack in the fourth quarter of the Chargers Monday Night Football opener in Oakland and then made his first-ever NFL start last Sunday vs. Baltimore, got a very late start playing football. He did not play as a prep at Mt. Miguel High School in the San Diego suburb of Spring Valley. After graduating, Nwagbuo enrolled at Southwestern College in San Diego and got his first exposure to the game. A successful two-year stint led to a scholarship to Michigan State where he earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies. Nwagbuo was then signed and spent time with the New York Giants in 2008. Between the time of his release from the Giants and his signing with the Chargers to their practice squad late in the ’08 season, Nwagbuo worked in customer service for Enterprise Rent-a-Car in San Diego. He finished the 2008 season with the Chargers and was re-signed for 2009.
Workout partners Linebackers Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips spent part of their offseason training together at Gold’s Gym in Los Angeles. According to The PressEnterprise, they pushed each other in weightlifting and cone drills during their workout sessions. Merriman, Phillips and fellow linebacker Stephen Cooper all share a townhouse in Hollywood during the offseason.
Linebacker zen Each position meeting room at Chargers Park has it’s own personal touch, including the linebackers’ room, where Shaun Phillips keeps a one-gallon mini-aquarium at his seat. The aquarium has been on his desk for the past couple of seasons and has been home to a number of different freshwater fish, primarily goldfish and tetras, but currently it features three blue guppies. The fish help Shaun keep his mind at ease during the linebackers’ meetings and provide some much-needed zen for the meeting room.
Nations United There is a section of the Chargers’ locker room, primarily occupied by defensive linemen that has become its own United Nations of sorts. Of the nine players whose locker stalls fill the section, five are either foreign born or the children of parents born in countries outside teh United States. They include DE Jacques Cesaire (Haitian), DE Luis Castillo (Dominican and Greek), DE Vaughn Martin (Jamaican and Canadian), DE Travis Johnson (Panamanian) and DE Ogemdi Nwagbou (Nigerian).
Bolts celebrate Blue Bombers The Little League World Series Champion Park View Chula Vista Blue Bombers were the Chargers’ special guests at last Sunday’s home opener against Baltimore. Each player received a powder blue Chargers jersey and the entire team was introduced to the crowd before the game. Several weeks ago, after their return from Williamsport, Pa., the Blue Bombers, so named because of the LLWS record 59 home runs the team hit during the tournament, took a tour of Chargers Park and watched the team practice. Afterward, Head Coach Norv Turner had the players form a tunnel and each Park View player was given a chance to run through the tunnel, receiving handshakes and highfives from the Chargers’ players. Several Bolts, including Luis Castillo, who was one of the team’s biggest fans, stuck around after practice and signed autographs for the new world champs.
Championships begin in the division The Chargers have been the rulers of late in the AFC West, winning four of the five last division crowns. Since 2004, including last Monday night’s win over the Raiders, the Chargers are 24-7 (.774) in the division, including 11-0 against Oakland, 6-4 against Denver and 7-3 against the Chiefs. The Chargers went 5-1 in AFC West play in 2008, including a 52-21 win over the Broncos in last year’s season finale to seal the crown. The Chargers’ 24 inner-division wins since ’04 are tied with Indianapolis for the second-most in the NFL during that span behind New England’s 25. Pittsburgh has the third-most at 23. Since the NFL realigned the divisions in 2002, the Chargers are the only AFC West team to win consecutive titles.
OL teams up with Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation The Chargers offensive line has teamed up with the Marine CorpsLaw Enforcement Foundation to raise money for the children of Marines and law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. For every rushing touchdown the Bolts score this year, each offensive lineman will contribute $100 toward the fund. Chargers fans are welcome to join the OL and contribute as well. Information is available online at http://www.mc-lef.org/.

Highlights from Week 1 at Oakland • The Chargers rallied from a 20-17 fourth-quarter deficit with 2:30 remaining to win the game, 24-20, on a five-yard touchdown run by Darren Sproles with 18 seconds left in the game. • Sproles finished the night with 246 all-purpose yards, including kickoff returns of 66 and 59 yards. • Philip Rivers engineered the game-winning drive, leading the Chargers 89 yards in nine plays after taking over with 2:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. He completed 6-of-7 for 79 yards on the game winning drive. It was Rivers 10th-career fourth-quarter come-from-behind victory. • Rivers actually led two fourth-quarter drives against the Raiders, both resulting in touchdowns. He capped the first with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson, during which he went 4-for5 for 65 yards, including a 10-yarder to Antonio Gates on 3rd-and3 and a 15-yarder to Sproles on 3rd-and-12. Rivers’ fourth-quarter passer rating against the Raiders was an outstanding 144.4. • Quentin Jammer had an interception on the game’s opening series and later capped a secondquarter three-and-out with an open field passed defensed on third down. • Stephen Cooper set up the Chargers’ first touchdown — a secondquarter one-yard run by LT — with a tackle, forced fumble and fumnble recovery against Darren McFadden just one play after tackling him in the backfield for a two-yard loss. • Gates also had a hand in the LT touchdown drive as his 24-yard catch to the one on a 3rd-and-12 set up the score. • Antoine Cason sealed the win with an interception.
Highlights from Week 2 vs. Baltimore • Philip Rivers passed for a career-high 436 yards in a 31-26 loss to the Ravens, tying Dan Fouts, for the fourth-most prolific passing game in team history. Fouts was in the broadcast booth at Qualcomm Stadium, working as an analyst for CBS. • Included in Rivers’ day was a career-long 81-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles in the first quarter that tied for the ninth-longest pass play in team history. • Sproles finished the day with 278 all-purpose yards – 26 rushing, 124 receiving and 128 on kickoff returns. It was the ninth-best all-purpose yardage day in team history and it was his ninth-career 200-yard game. • Sproles’ 124 yards receiving were a career-high and the effort marked his first-ever 100-yard receiving game. • Vincent Jackson had the second-best receiving day of his career with 141 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown catch late in the third quarter on a 3rd-and-18. Early in the game, Jackson’s nine-yard catch from the Bolts’ own three on a 3rd-and-8, kept the drive alive which ended with the 81-yard Rivers-to-Sproles TD. • Besides Sproles and Jackson, Malcom Floyd (45 yards) and Antonio Gates (37) both had catches longer than 35 yards on Charger field goal drives. Jackson had a second long catch too, hauling in a 38-yarder on the Bolts’ final drive of the game. • Fullback Mike Tolbert delivered a crushing blow while covering a late third-quarter kickoff following Jackson’s touchdown. That same drive would end a number of plays later when Shawne Merriman pressured the Ravens’ Joe Flacco, whose pass was intercepted by Antoine Cason for his second pick in as many weeks. • Luis Castillo’s nine-yard sack late in the fourth quarter helped force a field goal that kept the Ravens within five and set up San Diego’s offense with a chance to put together a game-winning touchdown drive.
