Capturing the spirit of Texas, San Antonio is a Mecca for history buffs. From its Native American occupation, discovery by Spanish explorers, old missions, the battle of the Alamo, and the Old West, the history and attractions of this beautiful city can entertain its visitors for days. When the area was first explored by Spanish expeditions in 1691 and 1709, the region was already occupied by a small Indian community established in the San Pedro Springs area, call Yanaguana. The first Spanish explorers gave the San Antonio River its name because it was the feast day of St. Anthony. The actual founding of the city came in 1718 by Father Antonio Olivares, when he established Mission San Antonio de Valero.

Sites and Attractions Information The Alamo - On the east side of Alamo Plaza is the most famous historical site in Texas where 189 defenders fell on March 6, 1836, after repeated attacks by Mexican General Santa Anna army. Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) was established in 1718 as the city's first mission. We give history talks to visitors on the hour and the half hour except during lunch time (12pm – 1:00pm). Due to the number of visitors that visit the Alamo each year we are unable to give walking tours. In the late 1800's the King William District was the most elegant residential area in the city, originally settled by prominent German merchants. The sizable mansions and quaint homes built by these early elite are definitely worth seeing. It was zoned as the state's first historic district, and has once again become a fashionable neighborhood. The Guenther House and Steves Homestead are opened for tour, but most are private residences. Pubs and Clubs Howl at the Moon – singing, clapping, stomping, dance-on-the-piano, rock N roll dueling piano show. It’s part concert, part piano bar and all centered around audience interaction and two baby grand pianos. Howl offers an experience beyond the average bar with live entertainment, comedy and sing-a-longs throughout the night. Address: 111 W Crockett ****We will be going to Howl at the Moon to celebrate Dani Wosick’s birthday Saturday April 4th. Everyone is invited. Coyote Ugly - Daily specials, great atmosphere, and of course the sizzling Coyotes Address: 409 E Commerce St. Waxy O’Connor’s Irish Pub – Irish and English beers on tap. Great pub food. All the latest worldwide football, rugby matches and more Address: 234 E Commerce St. Club Rive!– San Antonio’s hottest dance party on the riverwalk. Club Rive DJs play a variety of dance music. Located in the Presidio Plaza. Address: 245 E Commerce St. Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub – Right on the San Antonio River Walk, Durty Nelly's Irish Pub is one of those classic old-fashioned pubs with peanut shells covering the floor and piano music for the drunkards to sing along. Known for having one of the best beer selections in San Antonio, the bar fills up fast regardless of the season as locals take the place of tourists in the off months. Durty Nelly's also offers outside seating, the perfect way to people-watch on the Riverwalk. Many folks come all the way to San Antonio just to drink and do sing-alongs at Nelly's Irish Pub. Address: 200 S. Alamo Esquire Tavern - The longest wooden bar in Texas at 79 feet long is right in the most popular spot in San Antonio, the River Walk. The Esquire Tavern can fill with tourist in season and mariachis roam around trying to get money for songs. When it gets later in the night, the San Antonio crowd has known to be more rough around the edges and packed in tight at the Esquire Tavern which can always cause some friction. Esquire Tavern may be reminiscent of a time in the Old West when cowboys tipped their hats low and glared at any new meat but the bar is an amazing sight and the drinks are cheap at this San Antonio Riverwalk bar, just keep an eye out. Transportation Downtown streetcars If you need to get around downtown, the VIA historic streetcars are the way to go. Four different streetcar routes travel throughout downtown carrying visitors, shoppers, sightseers, and downtown residents. Streetcars come by each stop about every 10 minutes so there’s never a long wait. It’s $1.10 for a ride and you can pick up a route map at your hotel. You can get to Pico de Gallo (Dean’s dinner) by either the yellow or purple line. To and from the airport Your hotel may offer a shuttle service to and from the hotel – check with them. A taxi to the downtown area will be around $20.00
