SAMUEL BAK (Jewish Painter - Joodse Schilder)
1933 Born 12 August in Vilna, Poland. 1940-44 Under German occupation: ghetto, work-camp, refuge in a monastery. 1942 First exhibition of drawings in the ghetto Vilna. 1945-48 Displaced Persons camps in Germany; studied painting in Munich. 1948 Emigrated to Israel. 1952 Studied at the Bezalel Art School, Jerusalem. 1953-56 Army service. 1956-59 Lived in Paris. Studied at the "Ecole des Beaux-Arts." 1959-66 Lived in Rome; 1966-74 in Israel; 1974-77 in New York City; 1977-80 in Israel; 1980-84 in Paris; 1984-93 in Switzerland. 1993 Moved to Weston, Massachusetts.

Verplaats naar kamp in Duitsland, studeerde schilderen in Munchen Emmigreerde naar Israel. Studeerde aan de Bezalel Art School, Jerusalem. Legerdienst. Leefde in Parijs. Studeerde aan de "Ecole des Beaux-Arts." leefde in Rome; 1966-74 in Israel; 1974-77 in New York City; 1977-80 in Israel; 1980-84 in Parijs; 1984-93 in Zwitzerland. In New York all my friends are Jews

They are Americans with Hebrew roots
Voor Amerika, zijn beloofde land waar hij was geboren
They tell stories about Sarah and Ismael
En dat ik moest vestaan dat ik er nooit bij zou horen
Although none of them ever was in Israel
Wel als vriend, maar nooit of nooit één van hen
One of them left this world some years ago

He was the only one who ever dared to show That for him America was like the promised land I am sure that he expected that I would understand That I was a friend, but never could become one of them I was accepted, only as a member of the club of Jerusalem
