ARCH 575 PRO PRACTICE FALL ‘07

HISTORY HISTORY PHILOSOPHY SERVICES MARKETING PROJECTS LEADERSHIP LOCATIONS

UHL+Walker was founded in Toronto in 1965, quickly evolving to the interdisciplinary model of today under the leadership of Jesse Walker, Sam Uebelacker, Darin Harding, and Ben Larson. The partners committed themselves to a global practice in the 1980s with the opening of expansion offices in New York, London, and Hong Kong. The Partnership grew as new partners joined the firm, broadening the fields of expertise and areas of practice. Today, UHL+Walker offers a wide range of services which, with the close integration thereof, allows us to reach new and higher levels of design. In lieu of subscribing to fashion and polemic, UHL+Walker aims to deliver thoughtful, original and contemporary architecture that conveys a sense of humanism and purpose while fulfilling programmatic requirements. This is achieved through an intensive collaboration with clients and consultants and careful investigation into the best ways to accommodate the program. UHL+Walker exercises economy of gesture and meticulous attention which results in the highest standards of execution, delight in pure beauty, and respect for the client's need to be inspired and engaged.

Buildings should serve a higher purpose. We believe great architecture shapes the human experience, improves the quality of the built environment and helps conserve the earth's resources. Our goal always is to cut through the complexity to make life easier and better for people.

collaboration is inspiration: At UHL+Walker, we believe that our clients have the power to change the world through their progressive desires and needs. We find that forming a partnership with our clients helps to create the foundation for a highly collaborative design strategy. We strive to sustain this mission by creating environments that advance the exchange of knowledge so that everyone involved are inspired to reach their full potential. Our approach is multidisciplinary, bringing together specialists in areas such as architectural design, engineering, education, technology and sustainability to create a process that truly inspires innovation.

education and learning is priority: Architecture for education is our passion. Our vision is to combine our 40 plus years of experience and our solid reputation for trust and service with highly innovative, research-driven design solutions focused on the future. We think those solutions have the potential to transform learning. Designing a learning space is a journey that we take together to find the right answers to the right questions until inspiration yields a result the client never expected—the fruits of collaboration and the creative process. We promise to be champions of education. From technology to curriculum and sustainability, we understand how design affects learning. Our participation on national councils, our advocacy efforts and our local educator advisory groups give us all comprehensive understanding of the evolution of education and how we can support our clients' efforts both in and out of the classroom.

PHILOSOPHY design to build process:

HISTORY PHILOSOPHY SERVICES MARKETING PROJECTS LEADERSHIP LOCATIONS

From early project conceptualization through the final phases of construction, our variety of experienced design teams approaches each project with the integrated goals of creating superior design solutions, discovering environmental value and balance, and building excellent client relations. Our office support team includes designers and coordinators who assist with the production work and client communications. We have also pooled a tight network of talented designers and innovators that have been integrated to allow a design team to be formed to meet the specific requirements of all projects. Through early coordination with the client and design team, common ecological goals can be mapped to achieve site sustainability across multiple levels of the design and construction processes. When a project enters the office of UHL + Walker it typically follows a common path. Initial meetings and early site visits establish the functional, ecological, and aesthetic goals that will drive the design. Through physical and digital models, sketches, elevations, and plan view renderings the principal design features are agreed upon, and construction cost projections are then determined. When a drawing set is complete, coordination is shifted to the contractor and we continue responsibility for the construction process. During construction, management meetings ensure a continuing team relationship between architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, contractors, and clients. Our post-project studies and analysis solidify our interests in long-term success and our commitment to the creation of a satisfying and consciences environment.

MARKETING marketing strategies:

HISTORY PHILOSOPHY SERVICES MARKETING PROJECTS LEADERSHIP LOCATIONS

UHL+Walker has an integrated marketing division that allows the company to search for clients. The marketing team within the main office consists of 5 people working to attract clients and publicize UHL+Walker’s achievements and designs. The marketing teams have been trained to have a good understanding of the nature of UHL+Walker’s design philosophies. Marketing actively looks and screens clients for the greatest compatibility between the client and the entire design team, looking for clients who will be able to use our entire repertoire of services. The marketing team also works hard to get UHL+Walker into many architectural, engineering, and many other publications as a way to get the name out to clients more effectively. In working closely with design teams the marketing department is able to gauge the strengths of the office and look for clients searching for similar values.

market served: Due to UHL+Walker having offices around the globe, its international scope services many different types of design and development. Our offices in Dubai have participated in the recent boom of tourism in that area with the development of multiple resorts. Our head Toronto office recently completed a design for a major Canadian airport. The wide variety of our services and locations have allowed UHL+Walker to participate in nearly every possible market available to us.

CTA Station Date: 2007 Location: Chicago, Illinois Studio Head: Sam Uebelacker The redesign of the Adams & Wabash CTA Elevated Station also included a nearby plot of land with which to develop. The nearby location of a large event area but lack of a smaller event area in the area led to the development of such a venue. The open plaza would now be able to be used for a variety of uses, from a farmers market to a small scale concert. The sound from the trains are mitigated by a glass wall that extends along the western edge of the plaza. The redesign for the station allowed for views to both the Art Museum and the Sears Tower.

Museum of Steel Date: 2007 Location: Pittsburg, Pennsylvania Studio head: Sam Uebelacker The museum of steel is located along the Monongahela River near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. UHL+Walker came up with an engineering solution allowing for the sinuous design of the museum skin. The lattice of steel forms the structure of the skin and is seamlessly integrated with the glass and composite panels composing the barrier from the elements. The museum spans over a reflection pond and consists of a restaurant overlooking the river and two main galleries with soaring catwalks over each for a different journey depending on which path you decide to take.

Urban Design Date: 1995 Location: Baltimore, MD Studio Head: Ben Larsen The realization seems to be fully apparent that cities need good housing to become the vibrant centers of cultural and social life that they once were, and thus public and political support for urban infill housing is on the rise. Urban infill housing sparks neighborhood revitalization. Not only do new residents pay property taxes, but they also spend money. New residents spur retailing, religious activities, restaurant openings, cultural activities and events, office development, and the development of parks and recreational areas.
