Learning Insights The community duty that we had this week taught me a lot about the health issues (Measles and Japanese Encephalitis) that the society is experiencing today. This is the first time that we partake in giving immunizations/vaccines in the community. I learned to be responsible in every assigned task that was given to me. I learned that the protective
powers of vaccines are increasingly important in today’s time, so as part of the health care team we should encourage immunization adherence and confront misconceptions head-on and explain its benefits. Instead of dismissing parents’ fears and moving forward health care, we should make their cases in detail and contextualize vaccine efficacy. I realized that community service is important for so many reasons. It is an opportunity to use our knowledge and skills that we learn in school to utilize in a real-life situation in the community, to raise a sense of charity and virtue and most importantly to establish connections, embracing the challenge and stepping outside of your comfort zone. My community service experience at Barangay Mines View Park has been a productive, splendid and substantial learning experience.

Issues and Concerns The health issue about dengvaxia holds controversial value because of parents refuse to vaccinate their children putting them at risk for the diseases that the vaccine is supposed to prevent, so prior to giving immunizations / vaccines the health personnel’s of the barangay should first conduct an orientation or a seminar with regards to this diseases as well as the benefits of the vaccine that would be given in order for the parents or the guardian to be fully aware and understands the sole purpose and statistical evidence supporting the effectiveness of vaccines, one can conclude our society is a much better place because of vaccines. Therefore, because vaccines are safe and effective, it is crucial for all children to be immunized. The staff of the barangay health center should also provide an orientation or a preconference for us student nurses so that we are aware of the setting of the health center as well as the names of the staff working in there.
