NJ’S REGIONALIZED WATER BUDGET MANUAL TRAINING
HYDROLOGY OF WETLANDS
April 2 and 3, 2009 Course Code: EH0402CC09 $515 before 3/19/09; $525 after; $495 multiple
May 5, 2009 Course Code: EH0302CA09 $285 before 4/21/09; $295 after; $275 multiple
Successful wetland mitigation efforts rely upon accurate hydrologic characterization of a mitigation site; however, it can be difficult to calculate the necessary balance of water inflows and outflows that make up a wetland’s hydrologic cycle. The NJDEP’s Regionalized Water Budget Manual for Compensatory Wetland Mitigation Sites in New Jersey provides data on the principal components of compensatory wetland mitigation projects - from the evaluation of hydrological characteristics to on-site data collection and the preparation of a water budget. Expert instructor, Dr. Gary Pierce, will guide you through the techniques and offer assistance in the practical application of these procedures. Extensive Q&A sessions will be used to guide the workshop in a direction that best serves YOU - so bring your questions, concerns and individual scenarios for discussion! The Regionalized Water Budget Manual for Compensatory Wetland Mitigation Sites is a mandatory NJDEP resource for completing the required checklists for mitigations sites and/or banks.
By understanding hydrology, you will understand the distribution and circulation of water in a wetland. To delineate, manage, or construct a wetland, you need to assess the movement of water. Dr. Claude Epstein will review the connection between soil, water, and vegetation, while offering practical experience in hydrologic evidence regarding water table depth, evaluation, and Hydrogeomorphic Models (HGM’s).

A wetland construction project requires extensive knowledge and years of experience. Gain that knowledge and consult an expert who has the experience with both successful and unsuccessful construction projects. With instructor Dr. Gary Pierce, you will have not only earned an education but also invaluable consulting time. Learn the techniques of successful wetland mitigation planning and construction recommended by the National Research Council and the US Army Corps of Engineers. A visit to a constructed wetland complex in central New Jersey will highlight the “real world” application of concepts presented in the classroom.

Plants are the most obvious clues to wetland boundaries. These two-day combination classroom and field courses will teach you how to draw a wetland line by identifying a variety of upland and wetland plant species. Two offerings - please select North or South session
VEGETATION IDENTIFICATION - NORTH May 28 and 29, 2009 Course Code: EH0201CD09 $515 before 5/14/09; $525 after; $495 multiple Learn to quickly and confidently identify plant species which determine if an area meets the hydrophytic vegetation criteria for wetland delineation. With a focus on plant characteristics of northern New Jersey, botany experts, Timothy Dunne and Christopher Miller will teach you basic plant ID groups, plant morphology and botanical terminology.
Required Textbooks - Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide [ISBN 0316604429], $25 - Grasses: An Identification Guide [ISBN 0395628814] L. Brown - $20

INTRODUCTION TO WETLAND IDENTIFICATION
ADVANCED WETLAND DELINEATION
METHODOLOGY FOR DELINEATING WETLANDS
May 19, 2009 Course Code: EH0102CB09 $285 before 5/5/09; $295 after; $275 multiple
May 8 and 9, 2009 Course Code: EH0403CA09 $845 before 4/24/09; $895 after; $795 multiple
When you delineate wetlands without the proper training or experience, you run the risk of regulatory and career repercussions. Wetlands training can be difficult to grasp if you start your education in an advanced course. Do not make the mistake of jumping into the Methodology for Delineating Wetlands course without first being exposed to the basic principles of wetland identification.
This two-day combination classroom and field course is designed as an excellent refresher for environmental professionals who have completed a basic wetland methodology course and want up-to-date information on current wetland delineation practices, the use of additional indicators, and help with problem situations - including floodplains and coastal soils.
May 18, 19, 20, and 21, 2009 Course Code: EH0401CB09 $1,030 before 5/4/09; $1,050 after; $990 multiple June 17, 18, 19, and 20, 2009 Course Code: EH0401CC09 $1,030 before 6/3/09; $1,050 after; $990 multiple Learn the methods of the experts! This four-day course will introduce you to delineating wetlands using the Federal Interagency Wetland Delineation Manual, which is required for use in New Jersey. Techniques taught will also be applicable to individuals interested in using the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual as well. Recognize the key indicators of wetlands (hydrophytic vegetation, hydric soils and other signs of wetland hydrology) while instructors Ralph Tiner and Dr. Peter Veneman show you how to use them in following proper delineation methods. Immediately apply criteria learned in the classroom by performing wetland determinations during team field exercises. Vegetation: Analyze plant communities and identify dominant plant and indicators of hydrophytic vegetation
Taught by wetland expert, Ralph Tiner, this one-day combination classroom and field course will teach you the basics of wetland identification and introduce you to the practice of wetland delineation. You will review the skills you need to identify freshwater wetlands and their boundaries. This course will also provide the essential background material needed for further study in the field of wetland delineation.
