Successful wetland mitigation efforts rely upon accurate hydrologic characterization of a mitigation site; however, it can be difficult to calculate the necessary balance of water inflows and outflows that make up a wetland’s hydrologic cycle. The NJDEP’s Regionalized Water Budget Manual for Compensatory Wetland Mitigation Sites in New Jersey provides data on the principal components of compensatory wetland mitigation projects - from the evaluation of hydrological characteristics to on-site data collection and the preparation of a water budget. Expert instructor, Dr. Gary Pierce, will guide you through the techniques and offer assistance in the practical application of these procedures. Extensive Q&A sessions will be used to guide the workshop in a direction that best serves YOU - so bring your questions, concerns and individual scenarios for discussion! The Regionalized Water Budget Manual for Compensatory Wetland Mitigation Sites is a mandatory NJDEP resource for completing the required checklists for mitigations sites and/or banks.
By understanding hydrology, you will understand the distribution and circulation of water in a wetland. To delineate, manage, or construct a wetland, you need to assess the movement of water. Dr. Claude Epstein will review the connection between soil, water, and vegetation, while offering practical experience in hydrologic evidence regarding water table depth, evaluation, and Hydrogeomorphic Models (HGM’s).

When you delineate wetlands without the proper training or experience, you run the risk of regulatory and career repercussions. Wetlands training can be difficult to grasp if you start your education in an advanced course. Do not make the mistake of jumping into the Methodology for Delineating Wetlands course without first being exposed to the basic principles of wetland identification.
This two-day combination classroom and field course is designed as an excellent refresher for environmental professionals who have completed a basic wetland methodology course and want up-to-date information on current wetland delineation practices, the use of additional indicators, and help with problem situations - including floodplains and coastal soils.

Instructors Ralph Tiner and Dr. Peter Veneman begin with a review of wetland delineation including the latest hydric soils indicators, additional indicators for determining hydrophytic vegetation and wetland hydrology. Using collected data from supplements to the 1987 Army Corp of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual, as well as national standards for installing and monitoring shallow-water wells, you will learn advanced delineation in areas where wetlands have been drained to an unknown degree. Field exercises will be conducted in both northern and southern New Jersey to better demonstrate current practices and provide more practical experience in the area of wetland delineation.
