RUNNING EFFECTIVE PROJECT REVIEWS

HELPING SPONSORS, PROJECT MANAGERS AND SENIOR EXECUTIVES MEET THEIR OBJECTIVES

Presenter: Dr Graham Oakes, Founder and Principal of Graham Oakes Ltd.

8 July, 9 September, 11 November 2008 www.unicom.co.uk/projectreviews

Course Objectives

Organised by

At the end of the course the participants will understand: • How reviews can aid project stakeholders to achieve their objectives • When Independent Project Assurance is necessary • The challenges associated with running effective project assurance • How project reviews can be framed to aid learning and improvement, both within individual projects and across the broader organisation

Course Overview Significant investment has been made in project management skills over recent years, but projects remain something of a high risk / high reward gamble. They can offer large payoffs if they do succeed, but often fall far short of the promised benefits. Project reviews are a proven method for improving project delivery, yet few organisations are able to consistently perform effective reviews. This workshop will help people set up an effective project review process, and use this process to enhance the

benefits they realise from projects. It will also help people decide whether an Independent Project Assurance team is necessary both to strengthen the review process and to aid stakeholders outside the project team in their decision making.

Course Outline • Introductions and objectives • Why projects are hard to manage • Project Governance: why Project Management is not enough • Do you need Independent Project Assurance, or just better project reviews? • Setting objectives for project reviews • The challenges of running effective reviews • The project review process

“The aim of this course is to help sponsors, project managers and senior executives meet their objectives.”

Who Should Attend • Executives who manage portfolios of projects • Executives who wish to contain project costs and risks more effectively • Project directors and sponsors who want to run their projects more effectively • Project managers looking to move to the next level by managing the context for their project, as well as the internal team • Project reviewers and QA staff • Enterprise architects and members of other oversight bodies
