Allan Octavian Hume was a Scottish civil servant, political reformer, the founder of the Indian National Congress and the Father of Indian Ornithology. During his career in India he accumulated the largest collection of Asiatic birds in the world and housed these in a museum and library at his home in Rothney Castle on Jakhu Hill, Shimla. His remaining collection of 75,577 specimens is housed in the British Museum. In 1973, the Indian postal department released a commemorative stamp to honour the great human being.
