What is a romantic comedy? • A romantic comedy is a hybrid genre in which a story about romance is presented in a comedic style • Works in this genre are usually considered light- hearted • Sometimes romantic comedies are associated with the derogatory term, “Chick Flick”

Things you may find in a Romantic Comedy Two protagonists, usually a man and a woman, meet and they eventually feel like they’re perfect for each other • Generally there are several humorous acts in a romantic comedy • Also several romantic comedies have a theme of, “Love at first sight” • There usually is a happy ending •

How a romantic comedy relates to A Midsummer Night’s Dream • The protagonists, Hermia and Lysander, are in love, and Hermia decides to defy her father’s order in marrying another man, so Hermia and Lysander decide to run away • Love is the main conflict/ theme in, A Midsummer Night’s Dream • There is a happy ending in A Midsummer Night’s Dream
