ood and Wildflowers: There are oak and beech woods of great beauty on the lower slopes, with pastures above them, and above the latter the alpine zone at over 1,700 m (5,576 ft). For people accustomed to “no entry” signs, Romania’s mountains are a refreshingly new experience that you will want to return to.

N

ature reserves and wildlife: Natural Reservations are numerous, protecting 75,000 hectares. Some have been designated as national Parks where wildlife includes the rare bearded vulture, red deer, chamois, marmot, wild boar, lynx and bears. Wherever you go in the mountains you will find memorable scenery and a cheerful welcome.

atural Reservations: Eighteen protected reservations and “buffer” areas are scattered throughout the Delta. One can access them via narrow waterways past reed isles and forests, where pelicans and cormorants gather to fish. If you want to see the wildlife in solitude and without disturbing it, take a rowing boat into the smaller channels. A permit issued by the reservation of the Biosphere is necessary for this purpose.

country in Eastern Europe, Romania still claims regions that seem bastions of a medieval past long since lost elsewhere.” (Fodor’s Eastern and Central Europe)

omania offers a rich tapestry of tourist attractions and vacation experiences unique in Central-Eastern Europe: medieval towns in Transylvania, the world-famous Painted Monasteries in Bucovina, traditional villages in Maramures, the magnificent architecture of Bucharest, the romantic Danube Delta, fairy-tale castles, the Black Sea resorts, the majestic Carpathian Mountains, spas and much more.

eginning in July on, Romanians set off for the hills or the beaches. Because there is so much unspoilt open space, you won’t feel that the places are crowded if you go with them.

S

ummer Sports: Alphabetically, CAVING comes first, and that is appropriate, since Romanians are absolutely crazy about speleology. More than 11,000 caves can be explored without official permission, many being in the Apuseni Mountains.

F

ood: A journey to Romania offers you the possibility of tasting the specific traditional food, which is of course, the Romanian plate: ham, spiced cottage cheese, onion, sausages, bacon, mosaic salami. As wine goes well with food, you can try the white and red Romanian wines of the famous vineyards of Murfatlar, Cotnari, Jidvei, Dealu Mare and Valea Calugareasca -- they are excellent. And don’t forget to ask the waiters to serve you the famous Romanian “Tzuica.”

YCLING in the hills can be fun, following forestry roads and shepherd’s tracks.

IKING is a marvelous way to see the country, with very few tough climbs. Routes are signposted and crosscountry walking is so highly esteemed that there are even marked paths between the painted monasteries of Bucovina.

atersports: At the Black Sea resorts you can windsurf, water-ski and scuba dive. Canoeing or kayaking is possible on rivers and lakes, while a kayak is the ideal way to explore the Danube Delta.

W

intersports: Romania’s ski resorts were mostly purpose-built in the 1960s and 1970s and well-trained skiers characterize them as one of Europe’s most enjoyable, friendly and least spoilt winter sports destinations. Furthermore, they are extremely affordable.

E

xploring the Delta: For 5,000 years a small community had lived in harmony with the Delta’s extraordinary ecology, making a living on fishing, breeding livestock, and reed harvesting. The villages, crossed by the waterways, seem untouched by time. As a visitor you can explore this astonishing retreat of natural silence and calm by boat, an experience like entering the living pages of a National Geographic Magazine report. The starting point for a Delta adventure is usually the city of Tulcea, almost as old as Rome, and situated close to where the Danube divides into the three main arms that create the wetlands.
