Oscar Romero 2nd 3/19/19 Rhetorical Analysis Essay Persuasive writing advances progress towards social justice equality through the use if credibility, emotions and reasoning. Throughout King’s letter he tries to address the concerns of the clergymen and convince them he should be in Birmingham protesting. In Julia Alvarez’s story “A Genetics of Justice” she wanted to explain the horrible acts done against her and her country during Trujillo’s ruling. Lastly in Malala’s speech, her purpose was to advocate women’s rights, and a chance to be able to receive education and give or fight to allow for free education all over the world for every child. In Dr. King’s letter, he uses rhetoric by stating what him and his people have to with. Julia Alvarez’s story, “A Genetics of Justice” uses rhetoric through the explanation of horrible acts her country dealt with. Lastly, Malala’s speech had also used rhetoric through her speech, in which she talked about the life for children and their struggles. King’s purpose of the letter was to address the concerns of the clergymen and convince them that he should be in Birmingham protesting. The first quote that King uses to start off his letter is “My dear fellow clergymen” (King 1). In this short quote, King tries to build a genuine and respectable relationship with the clergymen when he says “dear fellow clergymen”. This shows a sense of rhetoric through the equal amounts of credibility/power, because King establishes himself as being as important as the clergymen by saying “fellow” meaning he is in the same position as them. In the second quote, King talks about what he is doing in Birmingham, while using important example. “Just as the eighteenth century prophets left their villages and carried their “thus saith the lord” for beyond the boundaries of their hometown” (King 1). In this quote, King briefly addresses why he is there as he uses an example of religion. In using this quote, King uses rhetoric by using a example of faith that relates to the current problem and shows that the problem they’re dealing with is as important as that event and that is being done for good. In Julia Alvarez’s story “A Genetics of Justice” her purpose was to explain/address the difficulties dealt with during Trujillo’s ruling.
