Flood Hazard: This case study should address the following aspect of the syllabus. 3.1.2 Natural and human-induced hazards Be aware of the processes of flooding (flash and lag responses) and the effect of humans on fluvial processes, including the effect of urbanization on stream flow and percolation; urbanization and forestry on both flooding and stream siltation and the impacts of agriculture, mining and industry. Flooding is a natural phenomenon that can be exacerbated by the effects of human activity. Understand that changes in land use can affect flood recurrence intervals. Study hazards in terms of risk vulnerability and response. In this case study you should attempt to address each aspect of this syllabus prescription by studying a number of floods and using particular aspects of the floods you have studies to address the syllabus demand. Hints: 1. Describe the difference between and provide examples of flash flooding and lag response flooding. 2. Use two or more examples of flood events to demonstrate how human activity has affected stream flow, percolation, and siltation. 3. Describe the impact of agriculture and industry on a specific flood event. 4. Give an example of a location that has recurring flood events due to allegation of the land by human beings. 5. Discuss in regard to specific examples the difference between the manner in which flooding is addressed in both LEDCs and MEDCs.
