In Evul Mediu sărbătoarea de Sf.

VALENTINE'S DAY

Tanar fiind, Valentin ii ajuta pe creştini in vremurile persecuţiei. In ziua execuţiei sale-14 feb. VALENTINE'S DAY

Pe hârtie s c r i a : "Mulţumesc.

Valentines Day Every February, acros s the country, candy , flowers , an d gifts are exchange d between loved ones, al l in the name o f St. Valentine. Bu t who is this mysterious sain t and why do we celebrate this holiday ?

The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. Bu t we do know that February has lon g been a month of romance. St . Valentine' s Day, a s we know it today, contain s vestiges o f both Christia n an d ancien t Roman tradition. So, wh o was Sain t Valentine and how di d he become associated with this ancien t rite? Today , th e Catholic Churc h recognizes a t least three differen t saint s name d Valentine o r Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who serve d during the third century in Rome. Whe n Emperor Claudius I I decide d that single men made better soldiers than those with wives an d families, h e outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential

soldiers. Valentine , realizing the injustice o f the decree , defie d Claudius an d continue d to perform marriages fo r young lover s in secret. Whe n Valentine's action s were discovered, Claudiu s ordered that he be put to death . Othe r stories sugges t that Valentine ma y have been killed for attempting t o help Christians escap e harsh Roman prisons wher e they were ofte n beaten an d tortured. According to on e legend, Valentine actually sent the firs t Valentine' greetin g himself. Whil e i n prison, i t is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor's daughte r - wh o visite d him durin g hi s confinement . Before his death , i t is allege d that he wrote her a letter, whic h he signe d 'From your Valentine,' a n expression that is stil l in use today. Althoug h the truth behind the Valentine legends i s murky, the storie s certainl y emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and , mos t importantly, romantic figure. It's no surpris e that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was on e of the most popular saints i n England and France. Whil e som e believe that Valentine's Day is celebrate d in the middle of February to commemorat e th e anniversar y o f Valentine's deat h or burial — which probably occurred around 270 A.D — others claim that the Christia n churc h may have decide d to celebrat e Valentine's feas t day in the middl e o f February in a n effort to 'christianize' celebration s o f the pagan Lupercalia festival . I n ancient Rome, Februar y was th e officia l beginnin g o f spring and was considere d a time fo r purification. House s wer e ritually cleanse d by sweeping them ou t and then sprinklin g sal t and a type o f wheat called spel t throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides o f February, Februar y 15 , was a fertility festival dedicate d to Faunus, th e Roman god of agriculture, a s well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. T o begin the festival, member s o f the Luperci, a n order of Roman priests, woul d gather at the sacre d cave wher e the infants Romulus an d Remus, th e founder s o f Rome, wer e believed to hav e been care d fo r by a she-wol f or lupa. Th e priests would then sacrific e a goat, fo r fertility, an d a dog, fo r purification. Th e boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips , dipped them in the sacrificia l blood and took to the streets ,

gently slappin g bot h women and field s o f crops with the goathide strips . Fa r from being fearful, Roma n women welcomed being touched with the hides because i t was believed the strip s woul d make them more fertil e i n the coming year. Late r in the day, accordin g to legend, al l the young women in the cit y would place their names i n a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name ou t of the urn an d become paired fo r the year with his chose n woman. These matches ofte n ende d in marriage. Pope Gelasius declare d February 1 4 St . Valentine' s Day around 498 A.D . Th e Roman 'lottery' syste m for romantic pairing was deeme d un-Christian and outlawed. Later , durin g the Middle Ages, i t was commonl y believed in France an d England that February 1 4 wa s the beginning o f birds' matin g season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine's Day — shoul d be a day for romance. The oldes t known valentine stil l in existenc e today was a poem written by Charles, Duk e of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Towe r of London following his captur e a t the Battle of Agincourt. Th e greeting, which was written in 1415, i s part of the manuscript collectio n of the Britis h Library in London, England. Severa l years later, i t is believed that King Henr y V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compos e a valentine note to Catherin e o f Valois. In Great Britain, Valentine' s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeent h century. B y the middle o f the eighteent h century , i t was commo n for friends an d lovers in al l socia l classe s t o exchang e smal l token s o f affection or handwritten notes. B y the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters du e to improvements i n printing technology. Ready-mad e card s were an eas y way for people to expres s their emotions in a time when direct expression o f one's feeling s wa s discouraged . Cheape r postage rates als o contribute d to a n increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. American s probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s . I n the 1840s, Esther A. Howlan d began to sel l the first mass-

produced valentines i n America.

Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the West, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to massproduced greeting cards. The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th-century America was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. The association estimates that, in the US, men spend in average twice as much money as women. Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine, Until 1969, the Catholic Church formally recognized eleven Valentine's Days. The Valentines honored on February 14 are Valentine of Rome (Valentinus presb. m. Romae) and Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae). Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome who suffered martyrdom about AD 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. His relics are at the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome, and at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland. Valentine of Terni became bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) about AD 197 and is said to have been killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian. He is also buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location than Valentine of Rome. His relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni {Basilica di San Valentino). The Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks of a third saint named Valentine who was mentioned in early martyrologies under date of February 14. He was martyred in Africa with a number of companions, but nothing more is known about him.

No romantic elements are present in the original early medieval biographies of either of these martyrs. By the time a Saint Valentine became linked to romance in the fourteenth century, distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were utterly lost. in the 1969 revision of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints the feastday of Saint Valentine on February 14 was removed from the General Roman Calendar and relegated to particular (local or even national) calendars for the following reason: "Though the memorial of Saint Valentine is ancient, it is left to particular calendars, since, apart from his name, nothing is known of Saint Valentine except that he was buried on the Via Flaminia on February 14. The feast day is still celebrated in Balzan (Malta) where relics of the saint are claimed to be found, and also throughout the world by Traditionalist Catholics who follow the older, pre-Vatican II calendar. The Early Medieval acta of either Saint Valentine were excerpted by Bede and briefly expounded in Legenda Áurea. According to that version, St Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer. Legenda Áurea still providing no connections whatsoever with sentimental love, appropriate lore has been embroidered in modern times to portray Valentine as a priest who refused an unattested law attributed to Roman Emperor Claudius II, allegedly ordering that young men remain single. The Emperor supposedly did this to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius found out about this, he had Valentine arrested and thrown in jail. In an embellishment to The Golden Legend, on the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first "valentine" himself, addressed to a young girl variously identified as his beloved, as the jailer's daughter whom he had befriended and healed, or both. It was a note that read "From your Valentine.

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball. In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800's and now the date is very commercialised. The town of Loveland, Colorado, does a large post office business around February 14. The spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.

Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips ofpaper and

placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen

god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.

The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavoured to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feaSt. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot ofpeople shared my feelings. Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in

wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn t going to support that law! f

Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies — secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers. One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death. I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to

the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine. " I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh — because they know that love can't be beaten!

Hundreds of years ago in England, many children dressed up as adults on Valentine's Day. They went singing from home to home. One verse they sang was: Good morning to you, valentine; Curl your locks as I do mine —

Two before and three behind. Good morning to you, valentine. In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart! " In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling. In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him. Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire. A love seat is a wide chair. It was first made to seat one woman and her wide dress. Later, the love seat or courting seat had two sections, often in an S-shape. In this way, a couple could sit together — but not too closely!

Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry. As you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seeds that remain on the stem. That is the number of children you will have. If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will also know how many children you will have.

Valentines Day Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine s bay -- and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine s bay, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than

While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl ~ who may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine, ' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular

saints in England and France. While some believe that Valentine s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine s death or burial — which probably occurred around 270 A.D -- others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to 'christianize ' celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

purification. The boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goathide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.

Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine s Day around 498 A.b. The Roman 'lottery' system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine's bay -- should be a day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, buke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry

By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's bay greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.
