Creating Resumes Resume writing should be treated as an art form which incorporates key elements of style and emphasizes key career elements. Multiple software programs, books, and websites are available which will assist in creating the perfect resume. Resume templates are also available in Microsoft Windows in which one must only fill in the blanks with his/her information. Recommended length suggested by many sources is no more than two pages.
Writing Tips Omit anything that may create a negative impression. A resume gets a quick glance for 8 to 30 seconds therefore use layout and visual impact to highlight your credentials. Neatness, accuracy, and freedom from typographical errors are essential. Focus on achievements in the last 3-5 years. Emphasize the most relevant accomplishments. Use me or my and not “I” in a resume. Use concise, short statements, not long paragraphs.

Interesting Resume Facts Most resumes will be reviewed for only 10 seconds before being eliminated (Simons & Curtis, 2001, pg. 1). Resumes are selling tools and you are the product (Weber & Kaplan, 2001). If you want to be singled out because of your resume, it should be somewhere between spectacular and awardwinning. (Noble, D., 2004, pg.7). The common statement “References available upon request” needs to be simplified, updated, or even deleted in resume writing. The word upon is one of the finest words of the 13th century, but it’s a stuffy word at the beginning of the 21st century. (Noble, D., 2004, pg. 14).
Top 10 Interview Tips Enter into a state of relaxed concentration. Act spontaneous. Set goals for the interview. Know the question behind the question. Follow up with an effective “thank you” letter. Consider the interviewer’s agenda. Expect to answer the question. Watch those nonverbal clues. Be smart about money questions. Don’t hang out your dirty laundry. (Asiaco Job Center, 2003)
Top Secrets of Resume Writing Chronological resumes, for the most part, are on the way out. Tell employers about special projects, skill sets, computer languages, leadership activities, people or team leading skills, and types of things outside the classroom. Always steer clear of using fluff words in your summary such as “Self-motivated, hands-on professional with an excellent track record of…” Research the company’s brochure, annual report and job advertisement, if any, and tailor your resume as much as possible to the position. (Provenzano, S., CareerBuilder.com).
