***** PRESS RELEASE ***** The 4th Annual Nation’s TriathlonTM Results Are In! Brian Duffy and Nicole Kelleher Cross Finish Line First as Top Male and Female WASHINGTON, DC -- The 4th Annual Nation’s TriathlonTM to Benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society took place Sunday in the nation’s capital, featuring a record field of nearly 4500 competitors, including Mayor Adrian Fenty, competing in the shadow of our national monuments and memorials. With athletes represented from 855 cities, 46 states and 7 different countries, the Nation’s Triathlon is the fastest growing triathlon in the country. This USAT-sanctioned Olympic distance triathlon included a 1.5k swim in the Potomac River, 40k bike course through downtown D.C., and a 10k run along Washington, DC’s monumental corridor finishing on the scenic banks of the Potomac River. With a start time of 7am, the first competitor crossed the finish line in just under two hours, joining their family and friends at the JetBlue Airways Finish Festival. First among top males was Brian Duffy, age 21 of West Chester, PA, posting a time of 1:55:59. First among top females was Nicole Kelleher, age 27 of Charlottesville, VA with a time of 2:11:49. Washington, DC’s own Mayor Adrian Fenty finished in 36th place in his division, with a time of 2:21:18. The top winners in the age categories are listed in the attached document. In addition to the general race, the 2nd Annual Roll Call Congressional Challenge was held, featuring more than 400 competitors from Capitol Hill and the federal government. Top male and female winners were John Hutchinson, age 25, with the Department of Defense with a time of 2:04:30 and Rebekah Sagan, age 27 with the National Institutes of Health with a time of 2:25:39. Also, the 2nd Annual UMUC Military Challenge took place, with more than 500 competitors participating. Ken Corigliano, age 29 with the U.S. Air Force placed first with a time of 2:03:36 and Stephanie Brown, age 26, with the U.S. Navy placed first among female competitors with a time of 2:24:55. This year also included the 1st Annual Commander-In-Chief Championship featuring individuals and teams from four military academies. The U.S. Naval Academy took the top spot among the academy teams and the top male and female competitors were Scott Terry, age 23, with the U.S. Naval Academy, who posted a time of 2:01:07 and Tracey Bruce, age 22, also with the U.S. Naval Academy with a time of 2:20:11.
The Nation’s Triathlon, which is the only triathlon in the country dedicated to building awareness and raising money for the treatment of leukemia and bloodrelated cancers, raised $2.4 million for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society this year with nearly 600 athletes competing and raising funds through the Society’s (LLS) world-famous Team In Training (TNT) endurance sport training program. To date, the partnership has garnered an estimated $5.5 million for research, patient education and support initiatives that will help the LLS bring us closer to a cure. -more-
