NORWALK COMMUNITY COLLEGE NSG 201 RESPIRATORY DIAGNOSTIC TESTS AND THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS CLINICAL ASSIGNMENT Purpose: 1. To enhance your understanding of various diagnostic procedures performed with patients with altered respiratory states. 2. To describe the nurses role in the delivery of care pertinent to a variety of procedures.
Diagnostic Procedures: 1. Bronchoscopy 2. Lung Scans (Ventilation/perfusion) 3. Thoracentesis 4. Pulmonary Function Tests 5. Pulmonary Angiography 6. Pulse Oximetry
7. Chest CAT Scan and X-ray Therapeutic Interventions: 1. Pulmonary Hygiene (Postural Drainage with cupping and vibration, pursed lip
breathing, and incentive spirometer) 2. Metered dose inhaler with and without spacer Assignment: 1. Each student will be assigned a topic from the above list to present in a post conference. Plan on an approximately 5 – 8 minute demonstration/presentation. 2. State the purpose of the procedure and the potential diagnosis. 3. Explain/demonstrate how the test or intervention is performed (do not read the prepared report). 4. Utilize pictures, literature, equipment, etc. to enhance the presentation.
5. Discuss the nurses’ role in preparing the patient prior to the test. 6. Discuss the post procedure nursing interventions. 7. Define the significance of normal and abnormal outcomes. 8. A written report of the procedure is to be submitted to your clinical instructor on the day of the presentation. 9. A self evaluation of your performance and the audience response will be handed in the following clinical week.
