Spetsnaz Report of Rangers 2009 This is the debriefing from the Spetsnaz Faction from Rangers09. The Spetsnaz faction had a total of 9 member’s ingame, 6 from Azores and 3 from the Portuguese Mainland. From Azores there were 4 SpetsnazAçores: WidowMaker (Commander), PxBoy, TheBug, TCarvalho. One R.A.T.: Bulldog. One Blackwater Airsoft: Bulldozer. From the Portuguese Mainland came two Spetsnaz: Sturm (Second in Command), Ice. And one Fox Hound: Tatiko. We were short 4 men, who could not come: Azura, Benny, D3lt4 and RS. We asked for reinforcement and had extra gear to equip other players but no extra men were given.
RG: A Naval Infantry’s Wet Dream Our Rangers 09 adventure started in the RG game with 3 of our members (WidowMaker, Tcarvalho and Bulldog) taking part of it while the rest of our Azorian team stayed in Alcochete helping out the Organization. Being one of the 3 members from Spetsnaz Açores that went to RG I must say it was one of a kind experience. Lobo in the days before in a Lobo Fashion started a campaign of scaring us with all the things we were going to be forced to do (let’s call that Lobino talk), unfortunately to him, he still has not realized that if we are crazy enough to fly across a Ocean to play airsoft there is not much we will not do or face. So thanks to a “French Marine” we were forced to swim to shore (putting my Cell phone out of commission), got rescued by “SeekBourne”, where involved in a boat race, got boarded, got bombarded from the air, made an amphibious landing in marshy lands, and after a dashing race across the marches ended shooting at hip level from the highgrounds a lot of stuck IN. RG was one of a kind experience that will be in my mind for a long time and that made the trip worthwhile. Even if we were forced to play with salty camo’s and guns for the rest of the weekend.
Thursday: Pregame Mahem Upon arriving to Alcochete we were left in the warehouse where we struggled to dry the clothes and to eat something warm. Most of my players were scattered and the mainland players only arrived late in the afternoon. While in the wharehouse, in my boxers I could see the trouble the organization were in, there was a considerable increase in players comparing to last year and most of them were arriving too late to be proper briefed, chrony and put in the field by organization car’s alone. When all of my team was put together, we equipped and had a team briefing in the car lights. All the work I had with preparing a digital presentation, with maps, photos went down the drain... Here is a summary of our briefing:
“ We are here because we do serious reenactment. We will to do our part in the game and some roleplay while doing it. No Spetsnaz will ever surrender, be captured alive, be left behind or retreat without express orders from its commander, if you do not have any bb’s ask a team mate for an extra mag or charge with your bayonet. We will not refuse a mission or bitch about one outside the team. If I (Commander WidowMaker) get captured, the next one in the chain of command shall lead, you are not authorized to negotiate my release. Roads were made for cars not for walking. Any conversation done to a Spetsnaz will have short direct answers and any request for information will have only one answer: “ Only my commander can answer that”. Always remember that our life is secondary to the mission. We serve Russia and the Spetsnaz” Everyone knows that Spetsnaz are real SOB but no one knew how much we could be. J
I distribute maps for all my players, along with detailed military maps for commanders and driver, most of the stuff came from last year since we did not receive any intel on game day and had to provide that ourselves. Most of the Azorian players had time to study the maps and satellite photos and where briefed by participants of Rangers08 about what they would encounter. Lobino talk before the game led to hard training sessions in the Azores that made Rangers look like a walk. Two Team’s where made to take advantage of individual skills and the technology (GPS, NVG,...) at our disposal. My main concern was for my faction players, I had to ensure that they had water, bb’s and enough rest. I also made sure that they all received enough information about game rules and orientation, like I said over and over again, a player that does not know where he is or where he is going is not playing.
Our secret game objectives said that we were interested in an Alqueada Victory. To achieve that we could disguise ourselves of ONU or Isaf, could attack any faction and even kill civilians. We were an independent force that could side with any faction. We took this like we were a force that would keep the game rolling, attack players that were bored at guard duty, make alliances with week factions and be organization special forces. Our first mission was quite hard. We were going to have 75 Taliban and Alqueada AEG’s, and had to transport them at night to a rendezvous point across Isaf/ONU territory. While this the Isaf would conduct Gun search missions into the Villages while the Taliban would be virtuously unarmed. Lobo tried to make sure before the game that we could not have access to the Spetsnaz Jeep and had to make the mission on foot. This was achieved by assuring him that no way could a jeep full of spetsnaz cross UN checkpoints safely, so I would have a small team rest in the jeep to ensure operability Friday morning, while the rest would be doing the mission in small caravans that would last all night. I could see Lobo’s plan, ensure that raid missions of the Isaf would go well by only having civilians to greet them. But... We also made a plan, we had a secret agreement with the Alqueada Commander, we would deliver the guns in less than 2 hours for some money and access to the Taliban Villages for sanctuary. How would we do that? In SpetsnazAçores the Grinders Squad does VDV reenactment, they took the Russian symbols out of their blue berets for some UN symbols, we had some UN homemade flags and armband’s and finally made the all thing topsecret, to a point where some pictures of the Blue Beret Russians were removed from the Web and that no such item saw the daylight before the game. A small squad of UN impersonators in the jeep in the confusion of dozens a players being deployed secretly went into game zone, hid and made the custom a reality, they went into the game with only leftovers from the RG game, low on water and bb’s. We were expecting to cross all IN area like that, deliver the guns and make sure a fully armed Taliban Faction could attack the Isaf base in the early hours of the night when most of it’s forces would be deploying around the villages. Has you can see at first I thought that we sided with the Taliban and Alqueada but like last year they would get the upper hand in the game (they even had superior numbers) which would make the Isaf contact us and hire our services, so we would shift alliances. With the money from the trade we would go into the market and buy all the petrol we could or it had, so we could ensure that we controlled the amount of vehicles each faction could use. We even had a simple secret plan to acquire money if needed, we would take Imperator (Leader of Alqueada) to a joy ride right into Isaf hands for a mere 300 000$ us. As you can see, Spetsnaz players in Rangers are like the original SOB’s they were impersonating.
Friday: A day too long All of the first mission original planning went down the drain since all of the players were being deployed with their guns and the organization had their hands full with all the arrivals to control the gun’s deployed. So the original mission was replaced by a simple water deliver to the Taliban Special Forces. So the remaining 5 Spetsnaz in the Warehouse were the last players to be placed in game, to compensate us we were taken to the market where the defences around it really surprised us for their strength, there we were allowed to fully arm with bb’s and water, we could also take 10l of water to the remaining Spetsnaz players and 2 flashbangs, we had to take 15l to the Taliban Special forces. At that moment we had no respawn or right to use any respawn of other forces, so if any Spetsnaz got killed we would be in a heck of a problem. Truth is told we were the cheapest, smallest and poorest faction in the game. We had no base, no respawn, no resupply routes, no patches, no flag, received no flashbangs, had no money/heroin and had to provide our one vehicle... I mean, come on, the Russian patches are sold on Ebay for less than 4$. Oh well, it could be worst, at least we got to keep our food. We were going to be dropped where we wanted and were informed that the Taliban SF were near the first bridge (UN checkpoint). Since we had just crossed the bridge 30m before we knew it was unmanned so I said to drop us nearby that we assumed the risks. Along the way we dropped 2 Spetsnaz with 15l of water (yes we stole 5l, call it workers fee) in the middle of the field where they hook up with the rest of the force with orders to make a temporary base to spend the night. We knew the adrenaline would be high in the first night with all of the players hitching for a fight; we were there for the long run. The deployment was a success, it took a while to make contact with the Taliban SF, but when we did, we demanded a box full of ammo from them for the water (they had 2 boxes), meeting was agreed under the bridge. One of our members was chosen for its fluency in Spanish to go there (where he stole a UN flag) while the other 2 were ready them self’s for a hell storm or bb’s. Any contact with UN/Isaf or trick by part of the Taliban would mean that none got out of there alive. Three Taliban were sent, contact was made first by me since I let them get 10 feet from my gun sight. Their good intentions were confirmed and the trade took place. They had orders to recon Kandahar, but since it was already 5am and we were quite far we decided to rest until day break. A few hours later we contacted the Jeep to make a rendezvous 3 miles from our position and headed out to it.
While going to meet us, our Jeep and “UN” squad made the audacity to go right into the UN Base, they were greeted at the gate and let in the base where the made note of all of the defences, tent/car/plane/mortar placements and number of defenders. We met with them a little later and gave a ride to the Taliban SF to 600m near Kandahar, where we had a chance to recon the Isaf defences. After that we loaded the jeep with all Spetsnaz and our gear and headed out to near the Plane Attack field, where in the woodland area near it we made a temporary base where we could leave our 3day backpacks and take our light 24h gear, we also fully rearmed and had breakfast. We further increased our UN disguise by employing the captured flag to the front of our car. There the team divided and had its first casualty, Sturm our second in command had to leave the game because of a family emergency, we were reduced to 8 which made me doubt our continuation in the game by original standards. Three members with Isaf Covers were sent to recon the UN base while the rest with UN covers were going to try to reach the market (I had an Isaf cover). We met with the Isaf Special forces where our “No surrender” policy was proven a success. It was a good feeling to wave at the plane when it passed over us and be waved back. By cell phone contacts knew that the market was in UN hands so we left the jeep a little north of the market and made a recon mission around it, by doing that we saw the Taliban effort to recover the Oxulum but made no attempt to help them (it would not be a good idea to show up in woodland uniforms at the rear of the Taliban attack force), instead we found a weapon and gear deposit deep in the woods and stole from it about 23kg of packed “Heroin”, we still do not know for sure who owned the stash, but since there was a lot of woodland/marpat gear we thought that might be a Isaf Special Force camp. So now we had something to trade in the market. We double back towards the jeep and head up to Pakistan, in there we tried in vain to encounter the Taliban main Base, we could find some traces of it but no Taliban, we called for them in Portuguese, English and Spanish with no result. After some time we saw at a distance 4 desert wearing players, I went to them unarmed while the rest of the team ready their guns. Then a funny thing happens. We go across an Ocean, cross the entire Alcochete Field into Pakistan and from 200 players who do we find? The other Azorean Players that were playing for Taliban, the SPOTRAM team. They were walking for hours and had not seen any action/friends/foes since the game began. We gave them a jeep ride and assumed escort duty. We saw the Isaf Special forces crossing Pakistan and informed the Taliban leaders of such in return we got the information the market was in Taliban hands so we went there. You can imagine the commotion a Un jeep with an UN beret wearing players escort entering the market from the border from Pakistan caused in the Taliban and Alqueada defending forces. They almost did not believe we were Spetsnaz, it was a good thing to have our Taliban friends with us. Since in the market there was almost the entire Taliban force we relaxed a little (big mistake), brought in the jeep and made no effort to help the defence.
In the market we were informed of the great difficulties of the Taliban side, several players had abandoned the game, they lacked cars/water/bb’s and the plane was a serious threat to any force concentration during daylight. I traded our recon intel to the UN and Isaf Base for an RPG, and offered the help of our force especially of the recon team near the airport. Shortly after the main Taliban force left to establish a new base near Kandahar, this meant several miles on foot. We found out in the market that we arrived 5m too late, since Takeo received orders to limit the sells so the supplies could last till Sunday and the water supply to the Isaf had just left (since I was in Isaf disguise I almost had it to take it myself). We had 2 kilos of heroin and we could not buy all we wanted. There was no fuel so we could only buy 15l of water and 9 flashbangs (one for each member). We played the poor part so we had these really cheap, although my original plan was to buy all that was there we had enough to keep going. We loaded the jeep just before the base suffered an attack, first by the plane that reduced the defence to shatters and after by a large combined force of UN and Isaf. We rushed to the defences to bottle up the attack force, while doing this I had a chance to see several of the defenders flee for the woods which enraged our forces since we were fighting for something that was not ours and dying for it alongside the FoxHound just to see others flee with their gear. Oxulum fell. Just one reminder, there was Oxulum and there was the market in Oxulum, the market was only the big tents clearly marked has such, all else was an Afghan village. When you say no fighting could be done in the market it meant the tent and near it not in the village. When fighting broke all civilians hid in the market tent and no gun was allowed in there. One of our members survived the onslaught and the jeep was not destroyed. Our surviving member put its UN beret and passed as one of the attack force mingling with them. We waited near in the oxulum respawn while the attackers got disorganized, some rushed to the water supplies, others to the guard posts, other to the far side to continue fighting, some receive civilian Taliban and several stood in a circle talking. Order was given to all eliminated players to leave the respawn, which was a good time for our surviving member to get in our jeep that was in the middle of the base and head out to Pakistan where he picked up the rest of our team. I must admit I got a little stressed when he said he got stopped in the process but he was only asked to give a lift back to the UN base which he obviously denied. We double back to our temporary base, with plans to join the Surprise attack to the Isaf Base on Friday Night. Lack of further communication made us not join the attack, and by reports of it that was a really good thing because I do not even want to think about what I would do when facing the same decision the UAK faced after it. Also the rpg we got did not work (the grenade was FUBAR), that ruined our plan of mounting a road block and taking out ISAF cars with it. When we got to our Base which we called the “Deposito”, I received a call from our recon unit, the ONU base had suffered an attack from some Taliban Force while most of its defenders where in Oxulum, our recon unit joined the attack and made heavy damage to the base, the respawn tent was destroyed and its flag captured. They were taken to Oxulum by the organization where they could not make the respawn in the Un controlled village, not risking
another jeep dash to enemy territory they started the long walk back while the jeep with no lights aided by an nvg went out to meet them. The ones that stayed behind further disguised the Deposito, and placed early warning systems around it; we ate and got ready to sleep. When our brave recon arrived we had the ability to make the car a Special Force Mobile respawn, finally we had the ability to respawn. According to our briefing we could do immediate respawn on the attack and regular respawn (3h) defending, a good way to make our small but resilient force rolling. The day had been long so we had a good night sleep, attacking us there would be very hard especially with the defences set up and camouflage used (we had trouble finding it ourselves).
Saturday: The Taliban Strike back Saturday morning we made sure we had a fresh supply of water and used a hose from Airforce personnel, it tasted kinda rubbery but it was good drinking water, we filled up empty bottles but kept that water primarily to cook and trade. We still had bottled water to drink. Early Saturday morning we saw a large Isaf convoy speeding near the main road, we tried to transfer that information to the Taliban but several problems with the cell phones did not make that possible. (Since radio channel could be listen to, all radio communication were kept to a minimum) We achieved communication with the Taliban by 12h00 and encounter most of the surviving defenders of Oxulum by the airforce tower. The news were not good, they had no village and were camping around Kandahar, when you think of the long walk they made to get there I cannot help but to feel admiration for them. We also were informed that the large convoy we saw was sent against them when they were attacking the Airport. The scattered Taliban were trying to reassemble in the picnic area near UN base. That was too close to danger for us and instead volunteered to capture Basram for the Taliban. We geared up and ready ourselves for to fight, the village would fall to our hands or we would all die trying. We left the Jeep out of sight about 500m from the village and advanced on foot with the UN in front and Isaf in the back, the Isaf players carried water bottles and we all had a relaxed posture, we were going to exploit the thirst the defenders should be feeling, walk like a supply force and kill the greeting defenders. We walk up silently and swept the place. It was emptied although some traces of players were there (grenades and water bottles). We then announced to the Taliban that the village had been taken and supplied with a respawn point, after that we fortified the village with multiple gun points, patrols and lookouts. FoxHound players made it to Bagram where they had a chance to rest and respawn. Most of them had to abandon the game shortly after but we got reinforced with 3 new members, which we called Spetsnaz Trained Militia. We received all supplies of the members that left and even found a stash of food consisting on about two dozens of snack bags. Upon contacting the Alqueada we learned about a night attack to the Isaf and were asked to join, we agreed and would meet with them about 2 miles from the base at 21h00. Seeing there was enough time and that Bagram had no strategic interest we abandon it, our militia would go to the market has civilians with some heroin to acquire petrol and supplies, while the Spetsnaz went to the Dam in order to return home and in the process check for any Taliban in the picnic area. Upon arriving there we saw several what appeared woodland wearing players refreshing up there, so we made an attack plan, most forces circled the Dam and attacked by the flank calling for the jeep a little later, we learned from two players we caught that the game had been put on hold until 19h30 and that things were not going well. A few peanuts later we headed to our Deposito where we hooked up with our militia. We ate and re supplied, later the meeting point was altered because of the plane and Isaf patrols, we were to head to south of Kandahar and attack across the bridge using our mobile respawn to help the Taliban. It was a little later than 21h30 when we reached our position a little south and sent our main force to recon, while I stayed with the Jeep and driver, I must say that the animals and cars that passed near us on the road and fields near the Alcochete field limit left us quite
apprehensive, than we started hearing our Spetsnaz shouts, gunfire and grenades. Carvalho came to guided us to a better position, according to him Spetsnaz tried to enter silently by crawling across the bridge (across the green waters of the river was out of the question), it was not the best attack route, in fact one that we would avoid at all cost because a single player could defend it, but it was the only route and it was assign to us, the moonlight did not helped but it was the eliminated players that crossed the bridge pointing their flashlights to the hiding Spetsnaz and engaging them in conversation that ruin it all. So we charged, grenade throwing and guns blazing. We got pushed back, reformed and guarded the bridge from our end, we started making harassing manoeuvres while waiting for a build up of Taliban Forces near the Bridge, we wanted a full head on charge: lost by one, lost by one thousand. We wanted to cross by force of numbers but got increasing annoyed by the amount of players that just gather near the bridge without assuming defence/attack position limiting themselves to smoking and talking (looking back on the scene I am forced to admit that they gave all they got and were just two dam tired), Spetsnaz kept trying to pass with little result, we suffered little casualties but made very little progress. Nearing 00h00 and the Isaf respawn I personally made an suicidal attempt, by crawling by the bushes taking one IN with me to the respawn. Still furious with the help we got when attacking the bridge we went back to our camp, where we resupplied and made plans to attack both the UN and Isaf players in the following hours alone without any outside help. Our plan was simple. We knew the UN went to help the Isaf base so they would be tired when we would attack at 6h00 and we would attack the Isaf after 10 am when we were sure most of their players would be getting ready to leave, both attacks would go through their main gates with no disguises. We did not have enough forces to spare to defend any base so we would destroy the airport allowing the Taliban to deploy their forces around Kandahar undisturbed and go to a last effort attack to the Isaf ending the game with guns blazing.
Sunday: The final showdown My final orders for the attack was get in and get out quickly, leave nothing standing and nobody alive. Do not take prisoners; destroy the cars, mortars, tents and even the bunkers. I wanted the base useless and we gone before any Isaf reinforcement could come. Everything went according to the plan. It was 6h05 when we crossed the UN gate, they had more people awaked that we were expecting so we made the ultimate gamble and parked about 15m to their bunkers (one flashbang and it would be all over). To the orders to Halt we responded with bb’s and we quickly killed most of the sentinels, I ran to the command tent, there for my shame I tripped in one of the tent wires and went face down to the floor, that took me out of action for some minutes, when I finally came to me it was all over, the Spetsnaz were mounting guard and I could hear some discussion between players. Some UN players were complaining about us entering the tents and cars with guns pointing, while my guys where insisting that they threw grenades to those positions and still after that players came out to do knife kills. I also heard after this that some players got hit with a grenade and did not died, my players say the grenade did not go off and would not die for pity. There was also a small discussion about the destroyed bunkers but I must remember that we “destroyed” only material given by the organization. I don’t remember if I pulled Maximus or he did me, but went to the side and made an agreement, the base and it’s items was destroyed and we would leave. There were still some UN players in the woods but we manage to leave with the cars by a side road, we found it funny how a couple of UN players with no significant advantage asked 11 fully armed Spetsnaz to surrender it was a bit like a prisoner in front of a firing squad saying that they were all under arrest. J At this point I must say that we are not brutes and the people that know us know we play with the most honour and friendship, we were in Rangers to do a role and that attack was a part of it. We expected to at least take the plane out of commission to 9h. That did not happen. Back at the Deposito I called for medic assistance, they came under 5m. As always Timber was a great comrade, patched me up and warned me about the possible side effects of the fall and I needed to do so that the wound would not infect. Side note: My wounds got infected, went to the Hospital in Azores, got patched up and medicated. There is no sign of the injuries today. I was lucky, or better still, everyone in the command tent was lucky. After that our Fox Hound Militia and our player Tatiko had to leave. It was a great loss since they are all excellent players and friends. The Spetsnaz forces were reduced to 7.
I was feeling dizzy and Bulldozer was tired so we stayed behind resting and cleaning up our camp while the other 5 Spetsnaz were going to their final assault. Everything that we took to the field came out with us, no garbage or marks of our presence were left behind, I made sure of that.
I must say that these last hours were something to tell in long winter nights. The only thing missing would be the Vodka, if we had some (and if we drank alcohol) we would had three toasts, one to friendship, one to honour and the last silent one standing up for all of our fallen comrades.
I mean, my guys dressed their stripped shirts, picked up their Ak’s, put on Russian symbols and got on the jeep to go into the Isaf base in a final desperate assault 5 Spetsnaz against the Isaf.
I was not present so I can only comment about what was reported to me. Near the Isaf Base they met with Lobo who told them the election was taking place at Kandahar and that they should try to mess with it. A new plan was born.
They went to Kandahar and gave their weapons to the sentries saying that Lobo sent them to help, the weapons were returned and access to the base was given. Still distrusted by the Isaf players they were not let near the voting poles, but the Arab’s started a rally asking for UN players only at the voting room, then the Spetsnaz went to the car and just put their UN berets (some with Russian symbols) taking the part of UN players, expelling the Isaf from the vote room and effectively controlling the voting procedure. As I have been told they smuggled guns to the Taliban, lured Isaf players to rooms to apply knife kills and when the Taliban attack began took the remaining Isaf players by surprise shooting them behind their defence positions.
After Kandahar fell, Px (Spetsnaz Commander at the time) requested organization transport for 20 or so Taliban to the Airport where a new joint attack to the UN would take place. This was denied because the UN was retreating from the territory.I will ask Major Sergeant The_Bug for a better account of what happened since he was the mastermind of the final plan. That ended our participation in Rangers 09.
About the organization. The game had several defaults that the organization is more than aware and that I personally told them. But I must tip my hat for Comsubair, because they made a super human effort in preparing the field and the game, providing us all one of a kind experience. I can speak for all of my players stating that we had a hell of a good time. We enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. And in general it will be an adventure to remember for a long time.
