Characteristics of a Wiki • •

A wiki invites all users to edit any page or to create new pages within the wiki Web site. Wiki promotes meaningful topic associations between different pages by making page link creation easy and showing whether an intended target page exists or not.

• •

A wiki is not a carefully-crafted site for casual visitors. Instead, it seeks to involve the visitor in an ongoing process of creation and collaboration that constantly changes the Web site landscape. A defining characteristic of wiki technology is the ease with which pages can be created and updated. Generally, there is no review before modifications are accepted.

Linking and creating wiki pages CamelCase (also spelled "camel case" and sometimes known as medial capitals) is the practice of writing compound words or phrases in which the words are joined without spaces and are capitalized within the compound — as in LaBelle, BackColour, or iMac. The name comes from the uppercase "bumps" in the middle of the compound word, suggestive of the humps of a camel. Putting a word or words between square brackets also creates a wiki page for the word. Simple Text Formating • • •

Italic – (_italics_) or two ticks (''italics'') for italics Bold – Asterisk (*bold*) or three ticks ('''bold''') for bold Quotes – Quotes are done using the normal notation: o Use single quotes for words you want in 'single quotes' o and double quotes around words you want "double quoted" Underline – Plus sign (+underline+) for Underline Strikethrough – Minus sign (-strikethrough-) for strikethrough Headings – Bang (!) at the start of a line for H1, Bang Bang (!!) at the start of a line for H2, Bang Bang Bang (!!!) for H3, etc. Lines – Four dashes (- - - -) at the beginning of a line gives you a horizontal line (a.k.a. rule). o Note: anything immediately following these dashes will not be rendered. Emoticon – All of the usual emoticons work: o :) o :D o :-D o :/ o :-/

Lists and Tables

Bulleted List – To make a bulleted list, start a line with a tab (or 8 spaces) followed by a star: o * item 1 o * sub *item* 1 o * sub item 1 o * item 2 Ordered List – Ordered lists, a line with a tab (or 8 spaces) followed by a 1.: o 1. item 1 o 1. sub item 1 o 1. sub item 2 o 1. item 2 o 1. item 3 Ordered list with number continuation – A new ordered list format that allows number continuation with intervening text. The sample below o 1. One  1. a  1. b o * a bullet o 1. Two o 1. Three o 1. Four o A line with text on it o 1. Five

Tables – two pipes (||) are used to create a table in a wiki page. A basic table is done like this: o ||Region||Sales|| o ||East||$100|| o ||West||$500||

Rows – To add a row to a table, just go to the end of a row and press enter then use the pipes to add a row. E.g. o ||Region||Sales|| o ||East||$100|| o ||West||$500|| o ||North||$150||

Columns – to add a column, go to the end of the first row and write the title of the column and close the column by two pipes. E.g. o ||Region||Sales||Percentage|| o ||East||$100||10%||

o ||West||$500||20%|| •

Linking Images and external sites •

To be able to display an image on a Wiki page, the image must first be uploaded to the WikiUploads folder in the server. Copy the directory and the name of the image (including the extension) to the Wiki page.

To link an external site to a Wiki page, you may:

o type the website directory to the page o use the @ method:  First declare an alias that will be used to represent the website. Syntax: @alias=website  Choose a word to be used and link the word to the alias using @. Syntax: Word@alias • Note: Do not use more than two as it will not work. o Use the : method:  Chose a word that will appear on the page and link it to the web address. No spaces allowed! Syntax: Word:webaddress  If it’s more than one work you want to use, put the word inside double quotation marks. Syntax: “Two or More Words”:webaddress To comment on a Wiki Page or to post a question for other users to see, just use the word Comment or Question. Syntax: Comment:statement or Question:statement . This will display a different colour to the normal text and hence other users will see the comment or question easily.

Text colour and size •

To enlarge size of text on a Wiki page, use %Big% or %Big Big%, to reduce the text use %small%.
