On Friday evening, October 15th, in St. Joseph’s Academy Auditorium, a very successful box social was held in aid of the Athletic Association. The students invited their friends and some former pupils of the Academy and a very enjoyable evening was spent playing games and singing, after which the boxes were distributed. The attractive boxes containing the refreshments were judged by Mrs. L.E. Timmons, Mrs. M.J. Dolan, Mrs. Ray Letang, Miss Mona Whelan, and Miss Kay Tobin (W.R.C.N.S.). Miss Stella Vice was awarded first prize. Winners for the games were Anne Kelly, Kathleen McMahon, and Therese Wark. The girl holding the lucky ticket for the door prize was Miss Genevieve Kobus. Rev. J.J. Lynch conducted the draw. Convenors of the social were Betty Grace, Mary Clemen, Catherine Dominico, and Therese Wark.

This photograph depicts the family of Auguste Rougier, brother of former St. Francis Xavier Pastor, Rev. Paul Rougier. A native of France, Father Rougier came to Renfrew in 1866 and, after a period of time, sent word home to his brother that he was invited to join him here in Canada. Meanwhile, one of Rev. Rougier’s Assistant Pastors, Rev. Paul Agnel, had also arrived from France. He needed a housekeeper so he sent for his sister Frances to join him from France. Auguste Rougier and Frances Agnel met, married, and raised their family here in the Ottawa Valley. Among their eight children was a young man, also named Auguste, and pictured second from right in the back row. This gentleman married and he and his wife Violet had four children of their own, Viola, Bernadette, Joseph, and Loretta. Joseph Rougier, a member of the St. Francis Xavier family, had two children, Rick and Karen (Corbin), both of whom are also members of the parish. Auguste’s daughter Loretta continues to be a regular participant in our church and represents an interesting link between the past and present. The great niece of Rev. Paul Rougier, Loretta married Mr. Francis Ballard in 1969. Mr. Ballard, who passed away in 1973, was the grandfather of our very own Rev. Steven Ballard, who served as Assistant Pastor of St. Francis Xavier from 1990 to 1997.

The Most Rev. Joseph Raymond Windle, Bishop of Pembroke, celebrated an open air Mass on the lawn of the former St. Joseph’s High School as part of the 125th Anniversary celebration of the Town of Renfrew. He was assisted at the Mass by Rev. D.J. Morris (left), Rt. Rev. Msgr. Borne, and by Rev. Michael Sheehan (right). In his homily, Father Sheehan made note of how appropriate it was to celebrate this occasion on the site of one of Renfrew’s first homes. A letter to Rev. P.T. Ryan from The Most Rev. N.Z. Lorrain, Bishop of Pembroke, June 8, 1897.

Rev. P.T. Ryan

“Her Majesty Queen Victoria will soon celebrate the 60th Anniversary of her accession to the throne of England. In order to thank God in a becoming manner for the blessings he has accorded to this long and glorious reign, we ordain that on Sunday, June 20th a Solemn Te Deum followed by the ordinary prayer of thanksgiving and the prayer for the Queen to be sung after the Parochial M ass in all the churches of our Vicariate in which Divine Service will be celebrated that day.”

Bishop N.Z. Lorrain

In June of 1994, a culprit or culprits broke through a screen window of the St. Francis Xavier Rectory. Fifteen bottles of wine and a pair of Nike Air running shoes were taken in the break-in. We have no word on any arrests in this case so we must assume that the thieves are still on the run. Fifteen bottles of wine are only going to get you so far so they’re quite likely running on empty.
