Celebrating our 45th year in breeding Red Angus, Halfmann Red Angus is proud to offer a great set of bulls and females in our “2009 Red Investment Production Sale!” We firmly believe that the money you spend on our Red genetics is a great Investment in your herd’s future. HRA is offering 50 performance-tested, registered, 100% 1A Red Angus bulls. This set of bulls is uniform, heavy muscled and loaded with excellent genetic merit. They have been developed for longevity on a high-roughage forage ration to allow them to naturally express their genetic potential for roughage conversion and carcass quality. The 20-month old bulls were run on sorghum-sudan grazer throughout the summer without any supplemental feeding. We are developing bulls demanded by the current market that are mod(Left to right) Cody, Glen, Diane, Jessica and Chad Halfmann erate-sized and easy calving with growth. In addition, we are using the most current technologies including ultrasound and DNA markers, such as marbling and tenderness, to enhance their genetic value. Producers are receiving premiums for higher quality calves through retained ownership feeding programs. HRA is also offering a select group of 28 registered, 100% 1A Red Angus bred females that are functional and efficient. New for 2009 will be 4 Embryo Lots selected from our top donors! FOCUSING ON THE BOTTOM LINE Profit has two sides to the equation, Income & Expense. For many years, some cattlemen have concentrated on how to maximize income, while not paying attention to expense. When times get tough, as we are currently experiencing, businesses of all industries tend to become more efficient and focus on reducing expenses. The Red Angus Association recognized this early on and developed unbiased scientific methods to measure economically relevant traits to help cattlemen become more efficient. The most economically relevant traits are Calving Ease Direct (CED), Birth-weight (BW), Maintenance Energy (ME) and Stayability. BW is highly correlated to mature cow size; use of lower birthweight bulls on cows is the surest way to keep moderate-sized cows. Complete information on EPDs is available in the “Rancher’s Guide to EPDs.” THE IMPACT OF BIRTHWEIGHT & CALVING-EASE The foundation of animal breeding is fertility and calf survival. Without cows breeding up and weaning a calf every year, producers will incur an economic loss. By introducing practices such as set breeding seasons and pregnancy checking, producers can become more efficient by eliminating cows that do not breed up and calve every year (eliminating the cost of carrying open cows). A residual benefit to having a calving season is having more uniform groups of calves that can be managed and marketed together. Also, using lower birth-weight, calving-ease bulls that have good weaning and yearling weights will insure a higher percentage of weaned calves and more total pounds of calves weaned. For example, suppose you use a higher birth-weight bull that adds 20 more pounds per calf at weaning. If the calves wean at 600 pounds and you lose one calf at birth, the cost of losing one calf is equivalent to the additional 20 pounds of gain on 30 calves. Maintaining a high weaning percentage should be a high priority. USING EPDS & RATIOS A common misconception is that EPDs will tell us which animal of several being compared is ‘best.’ EPDs are merely a description of each animal’s genetic make-up. It is up to us to determine which animal is best for us. Selecting for single traits is not always the most effective choice. When selecting a bull, take into consideration all traits that are relevant for your program. By correctly using EPDs, we can each determine which animal best fits our programs, or moves them in a direction we want to go. Ratios are used for comparing within a single contemporary group. Selecting between contemporary groups with actual or adjusted data can be inaccurate and could lead to selection or culling errors! Performance measurements such as growth and marbling may vary greatly between contemporary groups depending on how they are managed and fed. For example, grain-fed animals are more likely to have higher marbling scores than forage-fed animals. However, forage-fed animals may be genetically capable of producing higher marbling scores, but are not fed high-grain rations for other management reasons. When selecting within a contemporary group, ratios are a great way to determine an individual’s performance over others.

The Rancher’s Guide to EPDs EPDs: Expected Progeny Difference –How an animal’s future progeny will perform compared to the progeny performance of the average animals in the breed, assuming similar environments and matings of the same genetic value. EPDs in this catalog for sale lots are 2009 non-parent EPDs without accuracies. If accuracies were listed, they would be very low. Sire EPDs are taken from the 2009 Red Angus Sire Summary. (ACC) Accuracy – An expression of reliability of an animal’s EPDs.The higher the rating, the more accurate the EPD. CED (Calving Ease Direct) EPD: The probability that an animal’s calves will be born without assistance to a 2-year-old cow.The more positive (+) the number indicates greater calving ease. BW EPD: The number of pounds heavier or lighter at birth that this animal’s progeny can be expected to weigh compared to the progeny averages of all other animals in the breed. WW EPD: The number of pounds heaver or lighter at 205 days of age that this animal’s progeny can be expected to weigh compared to the progeny average of the breed at 205 days. YW EPD: The number of pounds heavier or lighter at 365 days of age that this animal’s progeny can be expected to weigh compared to the progeny average of the breed at 365 days. Milk EPD: The number of pounds heavier or lighter at 205 days of age that this animal’s daughter’s progeny can be expected to weigh through milk production alone. Total Maternal EPD: The total number of pounds heavier or lighter at 205 days of age from this animal’s daughter’s progeny through both milk production and genetic growth potential. ME (Maintenance Energy) EPD: Predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in mega-calories per month. HPG (Heifer Pregnancy) EPD: The probability that an animal’s daughters will conceive and calve at two years of age. CEM (Calving Ease Maternal) EPD: The probability that an animal’s daughters will calve unassisted as 2-year-old cows. Stayability EPD: The probability that after an animal’s daughters enter a herd, they will remain productive at least until the age of 6. IMF EPD: Carcass marbling score. REA EPD: Carcass ribeye area. Fat EPD: Carcass back fat thickness.

Commercial Females

OFFERING ABOUT 27 FANCY, SPRING-BRED HEIFERS. High percentage Red Angus, Red Angus x Hereford will be represented. The heifers were heat synchronized and AI’d to our $19,000 calving-ease sire, Hustler R588, and cleaned up with our other calving ease sire, Chateau L416. A few females were AI-bred to our Msn Statement T376 bull that sold into Montana, and cleaned up with other registered Red Angus sires. Calves should arrive around January 16. They will be sorted into small groups of similar type.

Terms & Conditions BIDDING DISPUTES: The Auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. TERMS: Terms of sale are cash. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the Buyer as soon as sold. Insurance will be available sale day. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry will be furnished to the Buyer for each animal, after settlement has been made. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Changes or errors of information contained in this catalog relating to the animals offered for sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence over printed matter in the catalog. BREEDING GUARANTEE: All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the Seller. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing within six months of the sale date. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the purchaser may return the animal to the ranch of the seller if in good condition, free of disease and complying with the health requirements of the Seller’s state. The Seller will be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months, the Seller shall be obligated, at his option, to refund the purchase price, replace the animal with another of equal value, or grant the buyer credit for use on cattle marketed by the seller. The return of the full purchase price shall in any case be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. If the Seller proved the animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the purchaser to take delivery of the animal at the purchaser’s expense. All

animals are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of: a) calves under twelve months of age; or b) animals shown by Purchaser after sale; or c) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the Purchaser. SELLER’S SEMEN RIGHTS: Seller keeps a 50% revenue-sharing breeding interest without possession, in every bull in this catalog unless otherwise noted in this catalog or in the sale day supplement. In the event Seller elects to collect semen from a designated bull, it will be done at Seller’s expense and during such time when purchaser is not using the bull for breeding. Future semen collections of the bull must be made known to all owners prior to collecting. These collections and costs will be divided according to each owner’s interest, unless otherwise agreed upon mutually by all owners. LIABILITY: Neither owners, sale managers, clerks nor anyone connected with the sale assumes responsibility, legal or otherwise, for damage of any kind. CONTRACT: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold. IMPLIED WARRANTY: Except for those stated in the terms and conditions, there are no warranties or implies, as to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose with respect to the cattle being sold in this auction.
