Rebuttal to Argument (extra credit—up to 200 points added to your Learning Portfolio) Description: In a minimum of 500 words, write a rebuttal to the argument you just presented in your Argument Assignment Paper. In other words, if you wrote that Health Care Reform should not be implemented in your paper, for this assignment you should create a convincing argument for why Health Care reform should be implemented. If you wrote that abortion was murder, now convince me that it is not murder. If you said mandatory recycling should be implemented, now explain why a mandate would not work, and so on. Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to a) make up for any shortcomings of your first paper. On a practical level this means you can bring your overall LP average up, thus improving your overall course grade. b) to give you practice arguing points of view you don’t necessarily agree with. This will help you hone your argumentative/rhetorical skills, while also forcing you to see an issue from angles you may not have considered previously (i.e., allow you to fully address counterarguments). While this assignment will only be 1/5 of the length of the previous one, you should follow the same format. Use MLA (Times New Roman, 12 point font, 1” margins, etc.); any sources that will strengthen your argument (Web, print, and images, if need be); a Works Cited; etc. Include a thesis/argument, and make sure you transition smoothly and logically from one point to the next. Due: Thursday, December 3, 2009 (last day of class)
