Newspaper Reading Response 1. Physics Teacher Invents Solar Stove Reference: The Jakarta Post | Mon, 09/15/2008 Ardani is a physics teacher at SMAN 6 Palu state senior high. Today, he is also known as the inventor of a solar stove. As a teacher, he has made an innovation by building a large stove using solar energy – he simply calls it a giant solar stove. To use the solar stove, we need to install in an open space under direct sunlight with an iron cooking pot or pan placed above it. The stove is powered naturally by the sun. Response: I’ve found a new vocabulary “apparatus”, it means tools, equipments. This article gives inspirations for Indonesian people to create a new innovation for the country. It also gives the way the new innovation works which could be something complicated for the kids; simply it isn't suitable for kids. 2. Djokovic wins Masters Cup title Reference: The Jakarta Post | Sun, 11/16/2008 Third-ranked Novak Djokovic claimed the Masters Cup with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Russia's Nikolay Davydenko in Sunday's final to end a six-month title drought. After Davydenko netted a serve return on match point, Djokovic repeatedly pumped both fists before throwing two rackets, his wristbands and shirt into the crowd. He went over to his family and coach, and they held a group hug, jumping several times together in joy. He won $625,000 and a Mercedes SUV. He got into the car, which was brought on court during the awards ceremony, and honked the horn. Djokovic dedicated the victory to his family, support team and fans back in Serbia. Response: I didn’t found any difficulties in vocabularies. This article told us about being the winner. It explains how the match ends and it told the score. The article also told us about an important point in the match. Every single thing like the prizes and who the winner thanked to is also explained. 3. Taufik to Face Lin Dan in Semis Reference: The Jakarta Post | Sat, 11/29/2008 Taufik Hidayat will battle against his perennial Chinese foe Lin Dan in the semifinals of the US$250,000 Hong Kong Super Series badminton tournament on Saturday. Lin has won six out of nine games against Taufik, including in last year's Hong Kong Super Series. The march to the next stage should boost Taufik's chance of playing in the World Super Series Finals in Kinabalu, Malaysia, in which only the top eight players in the Super Series standings are eligible to take part. Taufik is the only Indonesian player to survive in Hong Kong. Response: I didn’t found any difficulties in vocabularies. The article tells us about the rivalry between two top world’s badminton player, Taufik and Lin Dan. The article gives a flashback about the rivalry in the past and tells about the rivalry of two of the now. The article also tells about the future match beween two of them.
4. `The Terminal 2'? Japanese Man Makes Airport Home Reference: The Jakarta Post | Sat, 11/22/2008 This article tells about a layover person in Mexico City airport named Hiroshi Nohara. For reasons he can't explain, the Japanese man has been in Terminal 1 of the Benito Juarez International Airport since Sept. 2, surviving off donations from fast-food restaurants and passengers and sleeping in a chair. Various stalls in the food court give Nohara free snacks and drinks, sometimes even throwing in hats or coffee mugs with store logos to get free publicity during his frequent television appearances. Stroking his facial hair, Nohara said the 2004 film "The Terminal," starring Tom Hanks as an Eastern European man stuck in a New York City airport, was not his inspiration. But he acknowledged the similarities. "My life," he joked, "is 'The Terminal 2.'" Response: I found 2 new vocabulary “dingy” and “scraggly”. Dingy means rumpled, dirty, or gloomy. Scraggly means coarse. This article has an interesting topic. The article use advanced grammars and vocabularies which makes it not compatible for kids. This story has a very rare incident to be told. The actions of the stranger are also told completely so that we know what’s happening out there.
Novel Reading Response The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me Reference: Dahl, Roald. (1985). The Giraffe the Pelly and Me. England, Puffin Books. This story begins with a boy named Billy who wanted to buy an abandoned grubber store to make it into a sweet-shop. Then he met with a giraffe, pelly (pelican), and a monkey. They were the window-cleaners. Each of them had some special powers to make them clean the window easier. Billy joined the team to clean the windows. One day, the duke sent a message for them to clean his windows, and so the thrilling adventures began. Response: I’ve found a two vocabulary “grubber” and “vast”. Vast means wide, or in a great quantities. Grubber is the old sayings for the sweet-shop. Something good from this novel is the simple plot of the story. The story is also fun to refresh our mind if we don’t have time to read such a 1000 pages books. It is also tells us to always help each other and cooperate well in our environment especially in our team. In the team must help each other, so the problem is much easier for us.

The article contains a promotion about the university which is simple and easy to be understood. It’s just a simple article but it is detail However, it contains necessary things for a good promotion and takes people’s interests. 2. Shining a Spotlight on Dark Jewels Reference: Newsweek | August 18 / August 25, 2008 In jewelry, black is the new gold. While inky diamonds are in vogue, connoisseurs know that they are much like fool’s gold: shiny, pretty yet ultimately devoid of high value. But there are dark rocks that are worth their weight like onyx, jade, and black pearl. Responses: I’ve found a two vocabulary “connoisseur” and “vogue”. Connoisseur means an expert in examining an art designs. Vogue means fashion. This article brings us to a new fashion trend of jewelry. It is also tells some information about the dark jewels which are in a vogue. 3. Straight from Argentina Reference: Newsweek | August 18 / August 25, 2008 Argentina’s 2001-02 economic crisis was devastating, but the devalued peso has attracted millions of tourists and made it easier for Argentine artisans to export their goods. Now more and more distinctly, Argentine furniture, fashions, footwear and flavors are available around the world. Response: I’ve found a new vocabulary “artisan”, it means a wood-worker or rock-worker. This article tells us about the condition in Argentina. How the crisis was devastating and how it changed into a big benefit for Argentina, how the goods are available in the world.
4.
