Kaitlyn Post English 101 Professor Granillo 28 March 2019 Reading Log #7: “Is Google Making us Stupid?” The author's purpose of writing this article is to educate us about the use of Google and see if it is actually making us stupid. Carr begins the article by quoting an exchange between Hal and Dave a supercomputer and an astronaut that are in a movie. In the article Clive Thompson reaches a different conclusion than Carr does. This difference in conclusion conflicts the purpose of the article that Carr has. This article sparked a widespread debate across America in 2008. The discussion about this even continues today. The article also talks about how something on the internet may be messing with your brain. The theory is that it makes you choose things that you did not even want to choose in the first place. The speaker of this article is Nicholas Carr, “Nicholas Carr writes frequently on issues of technology and culture” (424). Carr is very educated and wrote a lot of books. The occasion of this article is our obsession of Google and technology. “For more than a decade now, I’ve been spending a lot of time online, searching and surfing and sometimes adding to the great databases of the internet” (425). The audience of this article are the people who use the internet and Google on a daily basis. “For me, as for others, the net is becoming a universal medium, the conduit for most of the information that flows through my eyes and ears into my mind” (426). The purpose is the author is trying to shock us with all of the information he has about the use of Google.
