No. 3 March 2009 I have, amongst other interests relating to history, a particular fascination with maps. This one, from Land Information NZ (crown copyright) dates from around the late 1850s and shows a very early survey of the peninsula we now know as Pt. Chevalier.
The main road doesn’t go to the beach — instead, it diverts towards the Meola Reserve area (but doesn’t cross the water). Notes include that the soil on the ridge is variable, but the middle “forms an excellent site for a township” as it lies between two streams and fronts the Waitemata. Even then, the Point had potential. — Editor
Next meeting of the Pt Chevalier History Group This is to be held at the Pt. Chevalier Community Library, 11 am, Wednesday 18 March 2009 Matters to discuss: Subscription for membership. The steering committee recommends that this be $10 per member. Proposed constitution for the organisation. The steering committee recommends a move toward incorporation.
