Definition:
a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.
What qualifies schizophrenia as a disorder: Individual must be able to demonstrate that he or she suffers from: delusions or hallucinations or disorganized or catatonic behavior
Causes: Genetics (Family history of schizophrenia). Brain development Neurotransmitters Pregnancy and birth complications
Symptoms: Delusions Hallucinations Disorganized thinking (speech) Disorganized or abnormal motor behavior
Data and Stats: Worldwide about 1% of the population is diagnosed with schizophrenia and approximately 1.2% of Americans have the disorder.
Treatments: medications and therapy Medications: antipsychotic and Anti-tremor Therapies: Individual Psychotherapy, Cognitive behavior therapy, Cognitive enhancement therapy
