Introduction

Inside this issue:

I would like to take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Nathan Graeff and I am the current '08-'09 PRPS Student Director and PRoPS Student News Editor. I am a senior at Penn State University studying Recreation, Park & Tourism Management with a focus in Therapeutic Recreation. As a student within our recreation field I know how tough it can be to network and communicate with others without a little assistance. I’m hoping to make it easier by adding new features and elements that will open up the communication between professionals, students, and faculty. This newly revamped and renamed PRoPS Student News pub-

lication is just one of those tools. Check item 2.3 for more new items! Along with the tech advances and open communication I would like to create a more inviting and interactive student branch. I bet 90% of you did not know there was a student branch, and couldn’t name a single member from another college/ university. I would also like to change that. Hopefully we will have some type of social within the next few months to meet and get to know other student members from across PA. However, I’d like your opinion on this, and some other issues.

Take a few minutes and complete the student survey. Visit www.prps.org and look for the “student survey” link on the main page (while you’re there, check out the updated “student crib” area). You can enter to win an iPod shuffle or iTunes giftcard just for your opinion. I look forward to your input! Thanks, Nathan Graeff

3.

You’re freaking out about finding a fun internship in a great location and we can help.

5.

Do you know what job in the recreation field just opened in Pittsburgh? No? We do. We’ll tell you.

Last October I had the privilege to attend the NRPA Conference which was held in Indianapolis, IN. This year with the conference being held in Baltimore we Pennsylvanians have a great opportunity to attend the national conference and represent PA and our colleges/ universities. Think it’s too late to register? Think again. Packages for students are still available at a moderate cost. $135 will get you the full student package AND a year’s membership to NRPA (Members only pay $90).

Don’t plan on staying the whole time? Then how about drive down for a day or two. You can pay per day and still get to see the exhibits and some sessions! It’s a great opportunity and thanks to the close location, it’s a very affordable option. Talk to your professors, chances are they will be lenient with missing classes for such a great opportunity. Job search, internship search, network, see world-class exhibits, learn some things and sightsee a little, all in the name of recreation and education!
