Proposing a Solution The second step in all problem-solution essays is to propose a solution Criteria for selecting a solution: 1. It must apply to the problem. 2. It must be reasonable & possible. 3. You must be able to give clear detailed explanation of a. How it will work b. The benefits of your solution 4. You must be able to defend your idea. You don’t have to agree with a solution in order to write about it!! Example: School Uniforms- Haven’t you heard enough about why we have them to convince someone else that they should have them? Read the following problem and list three possible solutions. You signed up to play for the YMCA basketball team several months ago. There are only 4 other kids on your team, so if one is absent, they must play a man short. Your basketball games are on Saturday mornings at 10:00. This week, you are playing the toughest team in the league. Your best friend invites you to go to the beach with his/her family for the weekend. You say yes, and your friend’s family pays for a separate hotel room for the two of you to stay in by yourselves. As you are packing for the trip Friday night, your coach calls to go over some plays with you. What are your options? Solution 1
