Properties of Water This lab IS NOT about how many drops of water you can fit on a penny! It is about the Properties of Water Use this as a guide to making a good lab report. In this lab you will be learning about the properties of water. • • •

Make sure to use the vocabulary whenever you can. 5Draw several water molecules and how they are bonded to each other. Make sure you discuss these properties: 5 Cohesion 5 Adhesion 5 Polarity 5 Surface tension 5 Hydrogen bonding

1. 5When you make your hypothesis do so in an “IF-Then” format. 2. To show the properties of water in a quantitative way you will be dropping water onto a penny. Some of the groups however will have a surfactant added to their flask. 3. You and your partner will do 5three trials. Hold the dropper vertically and drop water onto the penny counting as you go until it overflows. 5Record your data and 5get an average of the three trials. After you are done you need to 5report your data on the class chart. 5Copy down the class data so you can construct a class graph. 5Construct a bar graph using graphical analysis for the class data. Make sure to 5include a “best-fit” line on your bar graph and 5discuss the implications of that line. 5Why is there a trend? 9. 5What is a surfactant? 10. 5How did the surfactant affect your results? 11. 5Discuss your findings. 5Discuss the properties of water that affect how many drops you can fit on the penny. 12. 5Complete a mathematical error analysis and also discuss what sources of error may have influenced your results. 5Make sure you show your math. 13. 5Type up a complete lab report using the template that you may find on digitalwebb.com or the homework folder on the network. 14. make sure you 5write in full complete sentences 15. 5Proof read your work and look for errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling. 16. 5Check your lab report with this guide and make sure it is fully complete. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
