Why is your patient getting this medication Treatment of pathologic gastric hypersecretory condition.
Mechanism of action and indications (Why med ordered) Binds to an enzyme in the presence of acidic gastric pH, preventing the final transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen.
Normal dosage range 40 mg once daily For IV meds, compatibility with IV drips and/or solutions 0.9% NaCl, D5W, LR. Rate of Administration For direct IV dilute each vial with 10 mL of 0.9% NaCl for a concentration of 4mg/mL administer over at least 2 min. For intermittent Infusion dilute further with 100 mL of D5W, 0.9% NaCl or LR for a concentration of 0.4 mg/mL administer over 15 min at a rate of 3mg/min Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Hypersensitivity

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Instruct patient to take medication as directed for the full course of therapy, even if feeling better. Advise patient to avoid alcohol, products containing aspirin or NSAIDs, and foods that may cause an increase in GI irritation. Advise patient to report onset of black, tarry stools; diarrhea; or abdominal pain to health care professional promptly
Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Assess for erosive esophogitis, level of pain, and black tarry stools, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
Assessment Why would you hold or not give this med? I wouldn’t unless the pt was NPO, it is important to continue therapy even after symptoms have disappeared. I would however consult the physician if the pt was experiencing intolerable side effects.
Evaluation Check after giving Signs of healing of the esophagus and the pt’s level of comfort
