Dear Stephanie Uehle, The secretary at Glenmeade Elementary, Kylene Valles, encouraged me to write to you about the Glenmeade Elementary Special Education Instructional Aide position posted on EDJOIN.edu. I would like to fill that position and feel that my background in Communications and Human Development from Arizona State University, along with my volunteer experience makes me a strong candidate. I know that along with knowledge and experience, patience and enthusiasm play vital parts in being able to meet the needs of the student and I believe will be able to provide a healthy balance of all areas needed.

My understanding of those with special needs has been developing over the years as I volunteered in the special needs department of my local church. For several years I taught the ages of six through twelve in the special education building. My time there taught me the importance of patience, active listening and meaningful communication. It was also during this time that I began to learn American Sign Language so that I could better communicate and connect with those students who used Sign Language as their primary language. My goal was to complete several ASL courses at the local community college to receive an interpreter certification and I am half way through the program. I have been able to take my new knowledge of ASL and apply in my everyday life at Starbucks as well as at home with my daughter who has taken interest in wanting to learn herself. I know that this type of drive, discipline, and desire to connect with young students is exactly what you are looking for in a candidate you described in your initial post.
